Of all the outrageous performances at Sunday's American Music Awards, it's American Idol's Adam Lambert who caused the biggest stir. His appearance, which was aired at the end of the show near 11 p.m., involved Adam pulling a dancer's face towards his crotch region and kissing the keyboard player. It apparently prompted over a thousand complaints and was edited for the West Coast broadcast. Adam's scheduled appearance on ABC's Good Morning America tomorrow was cancelled as a result, a decision Adam took issue with today on Ryan Seacrest. He's instead bound for CBS's The Early Show. Adam seems to be handling all the pressure, though all the hype is perfectly timed to drum up press for his new album. So, tell us — do you understand the uproar around Adam's performance?
he was indeed disgusting....ewwww
1an "Other" option might help. i was offended by how atrociously horrible his little performance was. screeching is not singing. poser.
2It's a complete double standard. If he had kissed a female member of his band or had a female dancers head that close to his crotch there would have been no controversy.
3It's a music show and he was on right at the end. If you are offended, switch it off. If you're children are watching it then why are they up so late?
Apart from him being a bit pitchy I thought it was a great performance.
ceej, I
you!!! Total double standard!
4I totally agree with ceej. The uproar is awful. I've seen women on stage literally MANhandle and practically have sex with men on stage and we don't hear twice about it. This says a lot about where we are in society and it's sad.
5I agree with Peggy Olsen, I was sad he went for shock value over talent.
6i think that it may not have been in the best taste - but i think that people should just relax. think about it - all the past performances that were girl on girl - or the things that lady gaga has done with hanging herself during her performance and all that. he's only hurting himself since his song wasn't great and i wouldn't know what it sounded like if i heard it again since it was more performance shock than musical performance.
7ceej, tiabia, kismekate: I'M WITH YOU! double standard!!!
8I doubt people are taking issue with the same sex kissing. It was the simulated oral sex that was so trashy and desperate. All of the kids that buy your CD's and concert tickets stay up to watch these award shows and your behavior was unacceptable. Remember what put you on the map Adam, American Idol, a show watched by millions of children.
A guy like this that is supposed to be so talented had to resort to shocking the audience as opposed to entertaining.
His singing left something to be desired. He was awful.
9I really like Adam, but was shocked when I watched his performance.. like other people have said, he should have focused more on his talent instead of shock value. He must realize that his fan base is largely children under 18 and a lot of kids were going to be watching. He would have still gotten criticism even if he was that sexual with a women.
10honestly, I had no issue with his crotch grabbing or makeout session. I just didn't like the song or his voice... That was the real problem with his performance.
11It's SOOO annoying when people start freaking out because things like that. They won't let go, talk about it for a long time. So tiresome.
12His "scandalous" performance wasn't any worse than what has been acceptable for female performers at awards shows for the past few years. The only thing I'd complain about would be how dreadful his singing was.
13I got no issue with his crotch grabbing, Elvis did that a lot, and making out, well, everyone has done that on stage. but simulated oral sex? that's a bit too much.
Anyways the song sucks so it's no surprise that he went for shock value instead.
14Yep. Cultural decay at its finest. How some of you folks can't see that is disturbing and sad commentary on our future.
15Having heard the lyrics to FYE, it was meant to be shocking to convey the song's theme. As for scandalous.. I found 16-year old Miley Cyrus' pole dancing on a children's show to be much more offensive.
16How on earth is this cultural decay? You simply can't make such a bold statement without backing it up.
17You may think that it's not to your liking but that doesn't mean it has no cultural value. I think performers like Adam and Lady Gaga are exciting and look forward to what they produce.
Personally I find the sexualisation of teens a much more disturbing trend. Miley Cyrus dancing around a pole?
Anonymous and I had the same thought process there.
18Lame attempt to trump up publicity for mediocre talent. Lambert's hype has gone to his head.
19He was just looking for attention and he's got it... clap clap clap... Dont like him at all...
20It showed desperate need for attention
21His act did not cover up for the fact that he has no talent.
22Likewise for other acts that night that equate shock with entertainment and talent.
I think if he had a female dancer doing all those things then it still would have been an issue because they would be asking why he was doing those things with a female when we all know he is gay.
23Bottom line if he didn't come from a show like American Idol this wouldn't be an issue. Look at Lady Gaga- she is off her rocker but people still book her for shows because she is unique.
Let's get real. The problem only exist because he's gay. If he was kissing a girl, nobody would say a word. People don't mind him being gay, as long he hides it.
24Cultural decay - One immediate example - we have a man sexualizing his performance on prime time TV by simulating a BJ. How have we gotten to the point that we are arguing that this is ok?
25i was more offended seeing miley cyrus at 16 yrs old pole dancing on tv than this.
26I thought the performance was fabulous, but then I'm a HUGE Christina Aguilera fan. I mean he has the powerhouse vocals, and he's a wild, wild, wild fun boy! Who could complain?
27Oh, yes, the people who alwaaaaaaays complain. I don't want to bring up labels, but i love a raucous unexpected act that one talks about for days later. He's young and he's making a splash...he has the rest of his life to quiet it down.
ALL of it is too much. Adam, Miley, Gaga. Rhianna's ridiculous outfit. No one has REAL talent anymore and that's why they have to stoop to this level. It's sad, really. If any of them could really sing, they wouldn't have to do crap like this. Seriously? Did I see Miley on a friggin stripper pole? She's like 12!!!!!!!! Shame on everyone. It's disgusting.
28I totally agree with splork and bluestar.
29illanac13, do you ever leave a comment where you're not gushing over whatever celeb is the topic? Seriously, what PR firm do you work for? Or do you work for People Mag? I worked for one of the most "in" country clubs in the LA area for years & had to deal with rock stars, movie & tv stars & sports stars every day & I can tell you people, most of them are jerks, 99% of them are much smaller than they look on tv or movies (except sports stars), and 100% look at least 10 years older in person. Don't fall for their pr images, they're totally fake.
Re: the screeching, offkey porno dancer: because female performers have nasty, revolting performances to their record, does not make it classy, or okay for a male. I am equally disgusted by Britney, Maddonna & whatshisname. There are actually talented singers & dancers in this country people. Why do only the talentless hacks get all the breaks? Doesn't say much for the taste and culture of our country, does it?
30The only thing that sets him apart from past female popstars' performances at similar events is the fact that he is a male, and a homosexual.
How many times have female popstars simulated sex? How many female popstars display nearly their entire naked bodies while writing suggestively to their music? It's sexy for two women to kiss and repulsive for two men to do so?
I'm not a fan of his singing but obviously some artists are entertaining more for their performance then their voices - and he certainly managed to entertain and drum up publicity. He is who he is and he is unafraid to celebrate it. Bravo.
31the guy on guy kissing didn't bother me but pulling the dancers heads to his crotch was a little much for me. I'm not really a fan of Adam but he is starting to become known for everything but his singing abilities and that is disappointing.
32Completely agree with everyone who said DOUBLE STANDARD!
This sums it up perfectly:
33"The Adam Lambert Double Standard"
http://bit.ly/87IYzN
It was just a bad performance. He tried to go so over the top that we ended up watching a bad Vegas side street train wreck. Too bad. I wanted him to do well.
34Everyone who is calling this a double standard should think about the audience. Many people, myself included, find sexualized performances repulsive regardless of who's doing it. I'm equally disgusted by Madonna, Britney, Christina, etc. so a double standard doesn't apply in that case.
People who think it's ok for a female to do these acts while performing are usually men, in which case I'm pretty sure they really don't want to see two men doing it. So before you start calling everyone a homophobe or a sexist, think about who exactly finds these things inappropriate and why. Many of our culture's deteriorating morals, including oversexualization of teens, stem from the fact that this stuff constantly goes on and people either don't see what's wrong with it or they applaud it (for whatever reason).
Not to mention that doing things for the sake of shock value is stupid and pathetic because all it means is that you crave attention.
35Nicely said #35
36It was just a lame performance with or without the racy content.
And I am getting bored of all those people playing the "gay card" and "double standard".
37Gay artists have been adored for ages now, having fabulous and racy content. The only difference is that they actually added something with their art globally and changed people's lives and way of thinking.
Well, obviously he is not one of them.
You know what pisses me off?... I didn't see it and now I can't find it ANYWHERE. So now a thousand uptight people and the suits are telling me that it will offend me. I don't like to be told what MY opinion is and now I can't even see it to form my own opinion!
38crackinlobster you can see the performance on youtube, i believe if you search Adam Lambert AMAs it will be one of the first videos.
39the bottom line is that anyone, male or female, who does things like this is just stooping that low to get attention. I think it's just sad...Adam lambert has an amazing voice, and it already sets him apart from a lot former AI contestants. He didn't have to do that. Although I must say that it was all the more disturbing cuz he was getting raunchy with both the male and female dancers.
40no one is ever that good to turn into a disgusting pervert.......especially him.........never knew him before except for ai and will never look for him again.......what a shame we all know what sex is dont need his exploitation...shame on him......and shame where did the 5 second pause go?? this was at least as bad as the J J thing at superbowl wise up broadcasters or whoever or no one will be able to watch tv...........
41Thanks Snookyx but unfortunately the video has been pulled and everyone seems to link to youtube.
42To #40- my question is why are people so uptight about sex? and not for nothin' but I did see part of the show and saw Shakira's performance and I guess it didn't bother anyone that we had to see a female dancer smacking her on the ass. It didn't bother me but I'm not hearing these same people on here complaining about it either. I don't get it.
it was horrible
43I honestly just don't want to see people with their face in any one's crotch ever. especially not when I'm watching a musical performance where it doesn't make sense or make the performance better. It was just really unnecessary.
44Well he's basically doing the same thing straight people do, Madonna, Britney, Christina threesome on stage anyone? What are gay men only cool when they are giving out fashion advice and acting quirky, people forget they have a sex life, they aren't asexual. I dont like it either way, its just to much sexuality on T.V. but we cant hold a double standard.
45His performance and voice was desperate, too much and disgusting. My question is after all that, what next??? Is he going to resort to the real ACT of pornography on live TV while screeching like a banshee. What he did on AMA was NOT ART, he was ACTing out soft porn. Enough is enough with these celebs and their perverted shenanigans, it's destroying our society. Use your talent if you have any and stop corrupting our children and pretend it's ART! Thank God Idol had the good sense to rejected his azz, he's a disgrace to all communities, gays and the rest of society.
46I don't necessarily think it was appropriate, but I think their are some double standards out there.. there was definitely less uproar over the Madonna/Britney kiss.
47*there
48damn it Pop, why can't we delete our comments??
49When did Adam Lambert ever claim that he was anything other than what he displayed on the AMA telecast?! He was always glitter and eyeliner and that tongue and gyrating hips and sexual ambiguity and screeching yelps. He may have had to tone it down a bit to make it through American Idol, but this is always what I expected he would end up going for whether he won or not. Alternative electro laced pop with provocative lyrics and teasing winks to all the girls and boys who were wondering if they had a chance with this dramatic unicorn from outer space. I actually thought the performance suited the lyrics to the song pretty perfectly, as it is pretty much a jewelry laden middle finger to those who wanted to like him for his talent but wanted to mainstream and desexualize the parts of him that scared them. They said we'll like you if you don't cross any lines and he said "what lines?!" as he jumped all over that stage with his fellow dramatic deviants. I for one loved it! But at the same time I can recognize that it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but um... that is what the remote control is for. I don't like Miley Cyrus or Two and a Half Men, but when they come on my tv I don't sit there watching in slack jawed horror, I move on to something that is awesome. Therefore everyone should just get over it. This is not the most "shocking" thing to ever be shown on tv, nor will it be the last. Seriously though, you gotta give it to the boy for being on a bill as stacked with musical weirdos like Rhianna and Lady Gaga and still pulling out the most controversial performance of the night. I'd officially like to welcome Glambert to the pop-stratosphere!
