Oscar De La Renta
and people really believed that relationship would last, my ass
1As much as I love Desperate Housewives, that line was uncalled for.
2My thoughts go out to the Hanson family. My MIL had a pulmonary aneurysm and anything that close to the heart and lungs is scary! I hope he gets better soon.
And congrats to A-Rod and his wife...let's hope they can make their marriage work.
3Showmance!!!
4sumnboutme, I agree. I guess the script writers weren't thinking, but since we are in the booming stages of "Online Degree programs" it would have been far funnier if she would have said "one of those online medical schools"...I'm even laughing at the line right now
5hmmm...now that's funny, wasn't A-Rod in a scandal earlier this summer...weird how things work out!!!
6I adore your site and am a regular reader. However I must comment on the statement made regarding the show Desperate Housewives undermining medical schools in the Philippines: "We're sure they didn't mean to personally offend anyone." - I'm sure if that comment was made involving another ethnic group, e.g. African Americans or the Jewish community, the public would be appalled and there would be an uproar. I'm sick and tired of the stereotypes and racist remarks against Asians and Pacific Islanders being swept under the rug. We deserve the same respect as everyone else gets. I have a feeling you wouldn't have written that comment "We're sure they didn't mean to personally offend anyone" if the Teri Hatcher's character in the show said "OK, before we go any further, can I check these diplomas? Just to make sure they aren't, like, from some med school in Africa?"
7I knew they werent gonna last. i could feel it. i feel bad for nick though, nothing seems to stick for him
8pretty soon they aren't going to be able to say anything on tv without offending some group of people
9I didn't even know Nick Cannon was engaged? LOL! I really liked him with Christina Milian though...they were cute together!
I hope Isaac recovers! Poor thing!
And congrats to A-Rod hope this time around he has a boy to follow in his footsteps....well in regards to baseball that is, LOL!
10im not surprised..nick is a cornball
11give me a break esk4...the comment was unnecessary, and wasn't even funny
As for Nick Cannon...a perpetual loser!!!
12Did Nick really think that wedding was going to happen? Hmmmmmmmm, all of a sudden Christina Milian resurfaces.
13who is nick cannon?
14Get over the line in Desperate Housewives. I didn't even notice it. She didn't say there weren't quality Phillipinos in the medical field. She said she hoped he didn't go to Medical School in the Phillipines. Completely different.
15Ah, the old Aw-Shucks-We-Weren't-Tryin'-To-Hurt-No-One.
No one is saying that they can't say it. Only that saying it proves they must be even duller and less relevant than their stunningly dull and irrelevant show. My issue is not that it was said, my vote for greatest television moments include some incredibly racist lines from "Arrested Development", my issue is that they said it and then said they didn't mean to offend anyone. Its either unforgivably clueless or disingenuous and spineless in its refusal to take responsibility.
And as long as "Mr Show" and the "Ol' Felcher" skit air on television I think we're safe from not being able to hear all kinds of incredibly rude things on the air.
16Okay, Lorelei is funny. I hope that was on purpose.
17Newsflash - DH is a comedy show on the television.
18I was actually very surprised by that line on Housewives.
19no tiaba I won't give you a break because lots of shows do things or say things, or present things in such a way that any number of groups could possibly be offended... I think it should be taken for what it is a stupid line on a tv show... its not anti fillipino propiganda...
20hispanics get MADE FUN OF ALL THE TIME do you hear me my people complain, no get over it was innoncent, for god sakes ugly betty why does she have to be hispanic out of all the races there are, WHO CARES
21I definetly agree that the comment was unnecessary (I didn't see it though) BUT how about we try not to offend people by undermining the thoughts and feelings of others? However, I do think why bring up the African American medical school thing though? If you are offended by what someone said about another race, why give an example of it substituting another race (which basically just perpetuated the notion that one races plight was deeper than the other, which is the opposite of the point I think fresh was trying to make)? There is no need to justify the ignorance of the statement in question. Just outlining the inappropriateness of the comment made on the show would've been enough for me, and not left me in popsugarland with a bad taste in my mouth...
22I wouldnt necessarily say that we should make light of it though or write it off as nothing.
23What I was implying was that certain other ethnic groups, such as the African Americans and the Jewish community have a stronger voice than others - which I admire. As a result people are more careful with what they say with certain groups more than others. I just commented on how all deserve the same decency.
24But you guys are right - this should be a fun site and it is. I don't want to get into this too much. I signed the petition and hopefully they retract that line. Peace.
25selita banks & nick cannon - aww so sad! NOT!!
YAY!! TOP CHEF!!
26How many people remember the POLOCK jokes of the 70's and 80's...I can honestly say, people want to complain about anything anymore and it's really ridiculous.
There is nothing wrong with joking about ones heritage..Brad Pitt even said he was amazed at how Italians can argue and yell over dinner but kiss and make up 3 minutes later..that's part of the stero typical Italian family..very spirited..what's wrong with being able to laugh at yourself? I have a lot of Hispanic friends who will tell me jokes about Mexicans and we laugh about it and it's over..I mean, what about the movies that make fun of white people in that they can't dance, can't play basketball (White Men can't Jump), white people are too uptight, the White hicks in the South,(You might be a redneck if....) ect..ect...it goes on and on...get it over people..it's really Ok to laugh every now and then.
27Everyone knew that Cannon and Ebanks wouldn't last! Christina is probably laughing her ass off somewhere right now.
TV has been pushing many ppl buttons in the last decade or so. Many people are offended by the DH line and they have every right to be. Just because every other show does this, it doesn't make it right nor do we have to accept it. Write a letter, complain, boycott if you have to. Stand up for you believe in! And if anyone thinks its stupid to do so then they can kiss it. Personally, it was offense and I'm not even Asian.
28yeah, i'm pretty sure we all saw that coming
29i agree with you, zeldaf. some incredibly biased tv shows were the funniest to me: in living color, as you mentioned, was one; all in the family, the jeffersons, welcome back kotter are a few others. the problem i have with the shows today is that they insult people and then say they didn't mean to do it. what crap. either stop being such an idiot or have the balls to stand up for what you said.
30as for ugly betty, the show was based on a latin american tv show, so it was developed by hispanics about a hispanic. it wasn't a team of mostly (if not exclusively) white writers deciding to pick on a hispanic chic.
31anyhoo, i was going to confess to being completely clueless about cannon and ebanks. sad to say, i don't even know who nick cannon is. why is he a cornball and a loser?
32So, remind me Ashley, what's funny about suggesting that a particular country has inadequate medical schools? How is that the same as celebrating the spirited quality of the Italian temperament? Italy = high spirited. Philippines = substandard medical community. Not the same.
And, yes, I do remember the Polish jokes...as inappropriate.
33FYI - I know that EVERY ethnic group has their own jokes. Duh. I can site a handful of jokes pertaining to gay Filipino house boys or about how Asians can't drive, etc. I laughed. They were funny. This one, however, not so funny. Some are acceptable some not.
34No matter how you try to spin it, or how you try to justify that people are "overly" sensitive...the line offended a group of people, and they are letting their opinions be heard.
PS: There are PLENTY of shows that are offensive and admittedly so, and are in NO danger of being cancelled: The Sarah Silverman Program comes to mind...highly offensive, unapologetic about it, and funny as well. On Desperate Housewives, the line was meant to be offensive, and now that the writers are being brought to task on it...all of a sudden they didn't mean to offend...of course they did!!!!
35ALL races have something uniquely funny about them...I don't see anything with having a laugh or two about it. It's when you're raised to take offence to every little thing that could be directed towards you that I find wrong. We should be teaching our children to be strong and not put so much worth in what someone else thinks about us if it's negative.. not--- "Ok I'm gonna sue you because you think I'm funny looking or Im suing you because you hurt my feelings..."
My best friend is an Pacific Islander and he got an email from his cousin in Guam making fun of Pacific Islanders (all in good nature)...he sent it to me and said "lol, this is so funny".. I just don't see whats wrong that.
36I had no idea he was dating a model, well he kinda looks like one himself. That's sucks for him.
37zeldaf
the Philippines joke was not meant to say they had substandard medical schools...it was meant (as I took it and other people at my work took it) that you can get almost ANYTHING in the Philippines..in other words you can buy a diploma saying you are a specialty in almost anything.
So see..Zeldaf... I don't have to remind you what is funny about it, I just have to remind you how to take the joke as it was intended to be taken.
38Actually, Ashley, maybe that's a very good example of why the joke doesn't work. I was not aware that you can get anything in the Philippines and I'm not entirely unaware of the world around me. I think, if that's really the punchline they were going for, there were a million better ways to write the joke. "...from some phony medical school in the Philippines." for instance.
I didn't know there was a petition. I don't want them to retract the line. I just want them to admit that they are a terrible show with crap writers.
39lol, thats they way I took it too Ashley. Like you could almost buy any degree you wanted. I see it advertised on the internet and a lot of those companies are from Asia.
40just like you can buy knock off Rolexs, designer handbags, and so on from Asia.
41Praying for Isaac... Get well soon.
As for A-Rod, he's been a cheat for years. Having another child won't change that, unfortunately. I feel bad for those kids.
42okay here's my two cents in the whole philippines issues since I AM from the philippines. (there my cover up has been blown). i think it was offensive. i think it's such an limited view of the world. there are medical schools who are of excelent quailty in the philippines, it's just that the economy of the country is not so great that we don't have the advanced technologies that the west have AND that's maybe why medical schools aren't so great in the philippines.
AND NO you can't get anything in the philippines.
43The engagement was a publicity stunt. Nick Cannon should focus more on his somewhat career.
44I'm also from the Philippines, and agree with pinkflats and zeldaf. I don't know how that joke can be interpreted to mean that you can get almost anything from Philippines, which as other people pointed out is not true. All I'm getting from that line is that med schools from the Philippines are not credible. There are some jokes that are funny, and some jokes that go too far. I think this one fits the latter category.
45eh whatever about nick cannon
46i guess a-rod's wife forgave him about that incident with the stripper . . .
47yeah..who would want to marry Nick Cannon?
48I knew they wouldn't last. Selita is too pretty for him anyways, she needs a male model!
49SHOCKER OF THE YEAR! NOT! I knew it wouldnt last!
Cant believe Cyn-Rod got pregnant again after the way he totally went PUBLIC WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND! Who was a stripper! UGHHH!! he would never touch me again.
