Leonardo's is very picky about the films he makes. Maybe that's why before this year he hasn't been in one since The Aviator. Lucky for us - he's in two this year, The Departed and Blood Diamond. Apparently he is just as picky about his jewels as he is about his films. Recently he did a press junket for his latest film where he was asked whether his new film had changed his mind about diamonds. Here's more:

"Well, I don't remember the last time I have," he said. "My mom is the only person that I would buy something like that for, and for a while now she hasn't wanted one. But that isn't to say that people shouldn't buy them."
How can consumers make sure they're not buying conflict diamonds? "From my conversations with Global Witness or Amnesty International, you have to go into the stores and buy these diamonds and ask for a certificate, ask for some sort of authentication that this isn't a conflict diamond," he said. "That's one of the biggest ways that this whole process can be put to a stop."
He also said he and costar Djimon Hounsou spent a lot of time hanging out in muddy swamps while filming the movie. "We would sit there and talk about the different kinds of hot chocolates that you can get in Paris and the croissants. We'd sit there and dream like two weird women about pastries."
More pics of Leo on Melrose in LA shopping around, but probably not for diamonds so read more

3i'm glad he's advocating for conflict-free diamonds.
4ditto Sica
5hot hot hot
can not wait to see that diamond movie. he's got a goatee in that flick and an english accent and i'm gonna think about him later when i'm with my boyfriend----- and he looks HOT!!
did i mention how hot Leo is?????
6diamonds are this generations fur..
7I want some hot chocolate and pasteries now..yummmm!
It looks like he's shopping at Ed Hardy's (see the guy in the tan jacket shaking Leo's hand). He designs clothes, etc., and makes those trucker hats Madonna loves.
8I love diamonds, and honestly, I don't care if they are conflict or not. I know that is so un-PC, but...
I will not wear fur or buy shearling though! I love furry animals alive!
9I think it is really important to be aware of what you support when you shop
10Although, moat of my mom's diamonds are from the pawn shop, so who knows where they're from!
you would NOT BELIEVE the deal you can get on jewels at pawn shops...
I wish I could chat about cocoa and pastry with Djimon Hounsou
But way cool on bringing attention to the conflict diamond issue. Hope people pay attention.
11i'm glad my husband didn't get me a diamond ring, i'd hate knowing how many children had their arms cut off and how many innocent people were killed for a piece of sparkle.
12Me too, Ginger. I'm not really a Leo fan, but I'll see this just because Djimon Hounsou is in it. I likeee him.
13this movie looks great, and the cast is excellent! Very interesting story line.
Personally, I LOVE Leo, he is so talented, I love watching him on film. Leo, in my eyes, is OUR generation's greatest actor. ( Im talking the 20-30's something set).
14mar, have you seen The Departed? I think it was Leo's best film yet. He really was terrific in it, which I think is hard to do when you're acting next to Martin Sheen, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, etc.
15He is sweet.
16BS- I have not seen it yet, I hate going to the movies, but I will, and this other one too.
17mar if you like Leo, you will love him in this film. He is amazing, and I'm not even a big Leo fan.
18i've heard polar diamonds are through canada and are conflict-free...
19i personally don't care that much about them. i'll take a sapphire over a diamond any day...
He doesn't buy diamonds for his girlfriend? Oh my.
