I was more than a little shocked to hear the news yesterday morning that thanks to "creative differences" Ryan Gosling dropped out of the film adaptation of Lovely Bones and had already been replaced by Mark Wahlberg just hours before the movie was scheduled to start filming. This sudden change got me worried that something was wrong with the script, which would be especially sad considering how near this book is to people's hearts.

Now, rumors have surfaced that it was Peter Jackson who gave Ryan the boot instead of Ryan bailing. Hmm, the plot thickens. It's well known that 26-year-old Ryan has been gaining weight and growing a beard to better embody the father of a 14-year-old girl, but apparently it was a bit too over the top for Jackson's taste. According to the LA Times, Jackson was disappointed with Gosling's physical appearance, especially the weight. Meanwhile, Page Six says Jackson didn't like Ryan from the beginning, citing his demanding tendencies on set.
It sounds like these two talented men just weren't meant to work together. Ryan never struck me as a diva, but he is certainly a bit eccentric and could probably rub people the wrong way. And considering the recent successes in Peter Jackson's life (Lord of the Rings, heard of it?), he's probably got some stubborn faith in his own vision these days. I was excited to see Gosling take on this role, but I'm sure Mark's more realistic age and being an actual father will be excellent. At least we know Jackson can't have any complaints about his physique.

that sucks
1What the heck? Peter Jackson loses weight and suddenly he's judging everyone? LOL!! Just kidding. That's too bad. I love Ryan Gosling...he is an amazing actor. I just saw Lars and The Real Girl this past weekend and it was so good!!! He was really good in it too, the whole cast was. Well, I think it's their loss for getting rid of Ryan.
2All I know is if I gained weight for a movie and they fired me, I would be pretty pissed off. ha
3indielove loves this guy
4lol jmast i agree bout peter jackson
5This isn't all that new for Peter Jackson. I posted about this yesterday, but Jackson basically did the same thing to Stuart Townsend for the Aragorn role on the LOTR set. He was just "too young" for the part, so out he went and in came Viggo Mortensen. I do think Gosling is far too young to play the role of a father to a teenager.
6i agree jmast. i love jackson but he was plump, hirsute and disheveled looking himself not to long ago and that wasn't for a role.
i remember when he cast stuart townshend (charlize's boyfriend) to play strider/aragorn and townshend allegedly made demands and irritated jackson so jackson fired him from the lord of the rings trilogy and cast viggo mortensen instead. thank god for that!
i love ryan gosling and i think he's 10 times the actor wahlberg is.
7Peter Jackson lost weight? Pfft. He's still has an assface anyway.
rocknrepublic: thanks for the shoutout!
i agree with what Molly said and i don't
think Ryan is a diva either but he does know what he wants. Very assertive and that can be a good thing in a man.
I remember reading Nick Cassavetes, director of the Notebook, saying that Ryan and Rachel would always fight on set so he was surprised that they were
dating. Maybe she found that appealing about him because he doesn't let people walk all over him. I would too, I wouldn't want to be with some guy who let me walk all over him because that
means he has no backbone. I like fighting sometimes(as long as I win in the end!).
8i agree with amandahugginkiss's last comment. haha.
9hopefully the movie will do good..or it will be all peters fault..lol
10I don't think it was about Ryan being a diva. I think it was more about AGE. He has to be a father to this 14 year old girl, correct? Mark seems more age appropriate.
Ryan probably didn't look old enough, even with extra weight and a beard.
11Yum, I love him
12Oh, and I loved the book up until the ending. IT SUCKED! I won't ruin it for others, but I thought the ending was tacky.
13Peter Jackson is such a tool. Mark Wahlberg is nowhere NEAR the actor Ryan Gosling is. This was supposed to be an AMAZING movie and now it's going to be one of Wahlberg's trademark cringe worthy, one note performances. Peter Jackson is a freakin idiot. And Ryan Gosling has never been called a diva or even difficult before in his career. He's always been seen as charming and easygoing. Looks like the it's the film's loss.
14So you're not even going to give the film a chance?...WOW!!!
15Ryan Gosling a diva? He can't be. He's Canadian!
16haha, bibi.
17I really like Ryan Gosling. I'm not as much a fan of Mr. Marky Mark! The Notebook is still one of my favs. Now I'm sad for Ryan....poor guy!
18tiabia: i see what asho902 is saying. Mark Wahlberg plays the same guy in EVERY.SINGLE.MOVIE. he has practically no range acting-wise. i haven't read The Lovely Bones but if the character of the father is angry grieving one, then Jackson picked an actor that can definitely pull it off. I have seen MW cry in Four Brothers and it was as fake as fake can be. It's like he dropped some eyedrops in his eyes and put on a whiny face. Ryan was the better choice, far more interesting. i thought it took great initiative to gain weight for the role, now it was all for nothing, although looked mighty good with some meat on those bones. lol. gonna be a b*tch to work off though. i wouldn't mind at all if he kept it.
19At 26, Ryan is just way too young to play a father of a 14 year old, he's being over-ambitious and needs to look into roles more suited for him. Hugh Jackman would've been a better choice.
20ryan is HOOOOTTT though, not that marky mark isnt. just i mean, ya know. i wouldnt mind seeing ryan in a peter jackson flick...
21i agree rw... i think i missed the part where he is to play someones dad. i dont know that i can even believe marky mark would have a 14 year old son
22I just can't see Mark being married to Rachel Weisz. She's way too classy to marry someone like that. Haha.
Ryan isn't over-ambitious. He could have SO pulled it off.
23"he's being over-ambitious and needs to look into roles more suited for him."
I don't agree with this. I don't think that an actor should limit themselves. If the director thinks an actor fits his vision, and it is a well written part, I don't think you are overly ambitious if you take them up on the offer. Realistically he doesn't seem like the dad of a 14 year old, but realistically he doesn't seem like the type to love a doll either (lars and the real girl).
24I think Peter Jackson knows what he's doing, even if it does mean that he replaces Gosling. I agree about the Aragorn replacement thing, Amandahugginkissinsomething! I'm staying on the yay-train!
25well we all know when this movie comes out, everyone will be bringing up whether peter jackson made the right choice to fire ryan and choose marky mark. i hope the movie flops just to spite p. jackson. lol. but no in all seriousness i think marky mark is a better choice age-wise, but acting-wise...hmmm?; though he's good at the "me angry" roles i'm not sure if he can pull of dramatic roles as much as ryan can.
26i doubt it was ryan's age. peter jackson obviously knew how old ryan was when he signed up for the role.
27I agree with everybody. I love Ryan but I always thought he was way too young to play the father of a teenager. I agree with RW Tara...nice choice...Hugh Jackman! Too bad we can't cast these movies...LOL!
28Mark Wahlberg is an ok choice but doesn't seem like he fits into the rest of the cast.
Ryan does look awful, I'm glad to hear it was for a part though.
29gosh i do not like him like that.
30NOBODY PUTS RYAN IN A CORNER!
right, indie?!?!?!?
31He looked hot even with extra weight and the beard. And he wasn't fat AT ALL. He's not even as heavy as he was for Lars and the Real Girl. Again just HAWT.
32ktacce: so right! he deserves better.
asho902: i'm with you. i think he looks so sexy with the extra weight and beard. *drools* LOVE!
33I know a lot of people are saying they "love" Ryan but does no one remember when he was a nothing actor and dated Sandra Bullock? It was said the reason they broke up was because he had a really bad temper and was physically abusive to Sandra. When the notebook came out, it was never mentioned again.
34Even with a beard & extra weight, would he really look old enough to have a 14 year old daughter?
35I love them both, Mark is a better choice for the role, he will dip into it with an ease!!
36I love them both, but Mark is a better choice for the role, he will dip into it with an ease!!
37why are people being so harsh on gosling dont u remember ALEXANDER. angelina was cast as colin farrels MOTHER
and she was only like ONE YEAR or so OLDER THAN HIM

38LOL R&R! The only good thing about Alexander was Colin and Jared in the same frame!
39lol if ur talking about Jared Leto then i see ur point
40I am so!
41i never saw ryan gosling as the father anyway, but i sure as hell dont see marky mark either! they are going to destroy one of my favorite books
