JK Rowling was not joking..I just saw her talking on a British show when she was asked about her comment and she said she had always thought of him as gay. She even wrote on the script (on the side) to remember than he is gay, and this was years ago. She said she didn't see what the big deal was.

I think it makes so much sense that an author would have a very detailed backstory for every character, even some details that don't make the book. Doing this helps flush out the characters and make them seem more real (this is one of the HP books most endearing qualities, the humanity of the characters).

Some uber conservatives are saying that it is an example of forcing "gayness" into everything. IMO, "gayness" exists everywhere that people do, and an author can make her characters what ever she wants them to be.

I do think it is good for children to know that gay people aren't perverts that are about sex 24/7. Sadly, I think there are a lot of families that tell their children that gay people are that way.
