i love GWEN!!
1Joaquin: BURN!
I ♥ that man!
2ugh i guess that's cool
3but i hate when people donate money and release it to the press. I makes me feel they want to feel superior or something.
And i definitely thought she would donate money to Jamaica after the hurricane but whatever.
What does spencer do for a living?
4I am SO sick of Gwen Stefani and her appropriating ways. She really needs to knock the crap off with her pet Asians. I mean, its ridiculous. Then has a fetish with all things Jamaica and names her first child Kingston. Its gross. And totally not okay.
With that, I love Joaquin Phoenix. Im glad he gave FIYAH to Eva who I think is a bit passive agressive with her joking.
Wait - are we shocked that JLO bombed? Cmon!
5Hahaha oh poor JLo...
6ppl can be so negative sometimes
7Pink,I see Alishas point though..
8lmao i didn't know eva and joaquin secretly hate each other
9Wow on the JLo!
10Thats pretty cool of Gwen if she is doing it because she really wants to help the people that have been affected by the fires.
Maybe Brody's mother is his manager there are so many mama managers out there..
I love Joaquin even more after that quote. Eva Mendes annoys me.
11gwen is so cute.
12eh?
13It's cool of Gwen, but I agree that having it released smacks of "See what I did? I'm so giving!" Why not just donate it without making an announcement? It's the proceeds from the concert, not donations she's collected or anything.
14I believe it came from Gwen... like really.
15if it was from Angelina, I would snort. tsk.
Thanks Letsgetloud.
I dont get how Im negative for calling out clear instances of cultural appropriation for the sake of trendiness...some people just dont want to see whats in their face.
I'll take the criticism tho. Its all good.
16Good for Gwen!!
Brody is a nobody who can't do anything on his own but spend daddy's and mommy's money and gain celebrity status just because. Apparently his good looks aren't in his favor if his mom has to make the phone calls to get him into clubs!! Does he have to be home by 12 or what, he'll get grounded?
Maybe Eva and Joaquin are putting up an act for the mags; who knows if behind closed door they're all over each like a lusty romance novel!!
17Maybe her fetish with Jamaica will be done and she will regret naming him Kingston, although it is a cute name...
18All over each other like a lusty romancer novel. Ha! good one Rosadilia.
19Kingston is an awesome name. Agreed.
LOL
Letsgetloud - I LOVE your avatar. First time I ever saw it, it gave me nightmares and made me giddy happy at the same time. Go figure.
LMAO
20Really nice how some people on here can only see the selfish side of things.
If you lived
out here in California(as i do) around these fire devastated areas, you might understand a bit more how terrible the damage was. Gwen is awesome to give her money to help the cause...she
didnt have to, but she is a born and raised Californian who supports her home state. Instead you focus on the negative....pffft!
21I live in Southern California. I'm sick to death of the celebrity angle.
22Novaraen - while I agree that her raising money for the fires is a commendable thing, it does not negate the fact that what she also does regularly is participate in cultural appropriation.
To ignore that fact and/or make it out as if it bears little significance is offensive to those who feel offended by her behavior (did you know that there are Asian groups that have called for a boycott of all things GS?) and pretty close minded.
Or, another word: Racist.
But I guess we'd rather talk about how pretty she looks while dancing with the Harajuku girls.
lmao
23Who is Eva Mendes again?
24Oooooooo Lorelei, I love your avatar (my favorite movie)! As for Eva - you have to laugh. That man ain't nothing like a puppy.
25oh jesus christ, if gwen were asain would her having asian backup dancers be a problem? if the the "harajuku girls" dont have a problem with getting paid a sh*tload of money to appear in videos, go around the world and pretty much have the time of their lives, then i doubt you should. having a fascination with other cultures does not make her a racist.
26Calling Gwen a racists makes as much sense as calling Brittney Spear's a virgin and her children products of immaculate conception.
Do some research on Gwen. Where she grew up.. who the members of No Doubt were.. the original memebers and the ones who signed. Who she dated.
Gwen a racist! That the most ignorant thing I have ever heard about a celebrity!
27Yeah, it's nice that Gwen is donating money. Let's face it, she didn't have to do it, and she's savvy for getting some good PR for it. Plus, as someone else said, she's a SoCal girl — this is her part of the country, after all.
But I have to agree with Alisha_Stiletto on the Harajuku Girls. The "human as accessory" weirds me out. I like a lot of Gwen's music and can see that she's influenced by a lot of cultures... but there's something "off" about hiring those girls to dance with her, giggle a lot, and literally bow down to her. It just feeds a lot of stereotypes. Plus, and this might just drive me bonkers, Gwen keeps mispronouncing Harajuku! yargh! I don't think Gwen is actively trying to offend anybody at all — but I do think the Harajuku Girls period of her career was weird and uncomfortable for me.
28creepupmytee - ermm.. "if it came from angelina.. i would snort".. huh?? i'm sorry, i dont get it.
29I don't think it's "savvy" to get PR for it, I think it's incredibly self-serving.
Like I said, yes it's great that she gave. But there's absolutely no reason to announce it other than to make herself look better, which negates a part of "being giving," IMO.
I say the same about anyone who announces it, celebrity, noncelebrity, church organization, etc. The point is giving, not making sure people know you gave.
30isnt giving and letting people know you gave a heck of alot better than not giving at all? not only that, gwen has a pr firm working for her, if she so much has laughs at a joke, its their job to alert the media.
31Perhaps the 'ladies' here should take a couple of moments to actually educate themselves as to what cultural appropriation is. Perhaps we should be taking into account that there are MANY Asian people out there who are deeply offended by her taking their culture in efforts to make it trendy. And Gwen dismissises these expressions of disapproval - that is the first reaction of the Racist. Denial and Dismissal.
If we look at her video "Hollaback Girl" - we see the Harajuku girls depicted as Cholas. Which 1: reinforces negative stereotypes of Chicana women in the area (yes, they exist, but why promote it?) 2: Takes from a culture of which she is not part of.
Again.
I could care less if it was depicting part of an area where she is from, doesnt make it any more appropriate.
"Fascination" with another culture? I can understand appreciation, deep interest - but out and out stealing it?
Inappropriate. Offensive.
Look at history people, if you dont know it - learn it.
Oh, and calling someone Ignorant? = Denial and Dismissal.
32"isnt giving and letting people know you gave a heck of alot better than not giving at all?"
Yes, that would be why I said it negates PART of giving. Not negates the giving entirely.
33i didnt know culture was a commodity that could be stolen- wow i guess she should just flip her hair around and say "like oh my god i am not a hollerback girl" since she is from orange county and must play into the white girl stereotype for fear offending anyone.
34greggie-so now she is a half ass giver?
Good for Gwen on giving back!!
I feel for all those people who lost so much!
I just saw that pic of Brody from that article...he has such pretty eyes and eyelashes...seriously Im jealous
35
Obsess much Alisha?
36No one cares about Jennifer Lopez anymore, and hearing that her new album is fizzling and the record company is flipping out about the cost of promoting her is no surprise. I saw a commercial for the single, and i laughed out loud at the horrible choreography and her sorry excuse for singing.
37Gwen creeps me out for the most part and I really can't stand her but kudos for doing a charitable thing, especially considering how much she must rake in with all her ventures.
38It may be that all some people see about the Harajuku girls is that they're Japanese. Japanese, thanks. Asian is a pretty big term. But, that's a little silly IMO. She doesn't drag just any old random Asian or even any old random Japanese person on stage with her.
What you're saying is a little like saying that someone who isn't white can't dig on country music and Wranglers because that would be racist against white people.
She specifically digs on the Harajuku style. Last I checked, every Asian in the world
wasn't cruising Shibuya or wearing wacky clothes.
I don't get this whole "stick to your own kind" mentality anyway.
On another note, I think it's great that she's passing those profits on. You never know how the backroom deals work. It may be that she agreed to publicize it because the charity asked her to. Regardless, it may spur other people to donate and that's a good thing.
39Eva Mendez annoys the piss out of me. She's not that great an actor and has been a wee bit full of herself lately. Go Joaquin!
40go gwen!
41I think it's a really interesting question to raise about Gwen. I was uncomfortable with the Harajuku girls too.
I don't think there's anything wrong, per se, with cultural appropriation. For instance, I knew a girl in college - protestant, white, from new england - that married a Pakistani guy. She converted to Islam, wore the hijab, starting eating halal food, and learning urdu. Is that cultural appropriation too? She did it for love, no doubt, but she wasn't the type of person who would convert to a religion without really believing in it as well.
When Madonna calls herself Jewish and uses a cantor singing one of the most holy Jewish prayers in her song Issac, is that racist? Or how about when she went through her whole "Latina" phase?
I don't know. The point is, there's such a thin line between admiring a culture - like loving Rasta music and educating yourself in the music by working with Rasta artists and learning about the culture and the history - to using your interest in a way that is base and degrading.
42I've never liked Eva Mendes and I never really find her beautiful like everyone else and I think she was just really stupid with that "joke". Joaquin's awesome. I love him.
43Eva Mendes thinks she's so much better than everyone when she isn't even that good an actress.
44Go Gwen! That's awesome she's donating the money.
45
Joaquin phoenix - so i'm guessing all those rumours about them dating on the set of their
movie were false!
46that was nice of gwen
47tommy lee and kid rock are both losers
48gotta watch that "banter"
49obviously J.Lo has lost some of her staying power.
