Keira Knightley is this month’s Elle cover girl, the star of the upcoming film Atonement, and she had lots to share. Between dressing up in period costumes on set for The Duchess and gorgeous Chanel gowns on the red carpet, the British beauty had a chance to speak with the magazine about her feelings on cell phones, the commercial success of her movies, and winning her libel suit last May. Here’s more:
- On cell phones: "I hate them... It rings and then I realize that I don't want to talk to anyone. So I always press ignore... [After throwing her BlackBerry into the sea] I went, 'Oh, my God I want to be eco-friendly but I've chucked a BlackBerry into the sea... so I went diving into the water, which I hadn't actually been in, because there were meant to be barracudas or something, and I sort of fished around and couldn't find it anywhere."
- On the lackluster performance of Domino: "That is a film that belongs in an art gallery... I remember when Domino came out and it didn't do well. I was on the set of Pirates and people were coming up to me like it was a funeral. And I guess I just don't see it like that. Obviously I know the business side of it, but I am fundamentally not in it for that reason. I'm very, very selfishly in it because it interests me and that will lead me to do films that don't do well at the box office.
- On winning her libel suit in May: It was, "horrendous and completely devastating... because on another level it could potentially have ruined my career. Because if I had been anorexic, there is no way I would have been able to do a lot of the action movies that I do. People wouldn't have hired me. So when things are written that are trying to ruin my career, as that one was, I obviously have to take that very seriously."
It sounds like Keira is not going to let anyone get in the way of her cinematic success. Maybe it's that dedication that keeps the roles coming for Keira.

I think she's not pretty at all and only gets called that cos she was in POTC one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. My friend is anorexic and she tries to pretend her given-inner-always-there-energy with daily actions & sports in a not very healthy way. That's far from it to be an argument against anorexia.

8Personally, I don't think she's anorexic. Why go to all the trouble to sue? Alot of women in Hollywood would take being called too skinny as a compliment. So I think to go after the rumors with such fervor shows that she takes the claim seriously. She's always been naturally skinny.
9You go to the trouble of suing so as to be seen as proactive against such a disease as young girls look up to you. do you thin any star when they are at the top of their game is going to say yes I am sick and I need treatment therefore i am going away for a while. I think admitting you have anorexia when you ae a celeb is scarier than saying youare an alcoholic or a drug addict.

The point to the lawsuit was that a magazine ran a picture of her next to a story about a girl who dies of anorexia & implied that her death was Kiera's fault.

14As far as I can see she is way too skinny to be just called thing, she was healthy thin in Bend it like Becks but at the POTC premiere, with those tibs, that hunched over back and those hollow cheeks she screamed anorexia. Just like Calista Flockhart did all those years back and Portia De Rossi and Lara Flynn Boyle.
15I love Keira Knightley. I really think she's very classy and sophisticated. But something about the cover isn't doing it for me. Her face looks a little waxy or something. But the dress is gorgeous. Have to go out and buy this issue! I'll probably like her interview more than I liked Scarlet Johansen' in Elle last month.

17I think it's setting a worse example to say she isn't anorexic when she clearly is unnaturally thin. It's like tattoeing "unrealistic expectations" on her forehead. Because what she is effectively saying is that her body is normal it leads girls to believe that it's achievable. Which of course it isn't without starving yourself! And also, Keira? Sweetheart? I get that acting is your job but perhaps you're being just a little bit melodramatic? I doubt that your career will be ruined over tabloid anorexia articles. Because everybody knows that tabloids only print the truth. Why don't you talk to Nicole Kidman or Julia Roberts who have weathered pretty much every storm possible in their 20 year careers.

I agree she looked healthy in BTLB, it took me a while to realize it was the same girl! But now she is rather skinny, scary skinny even. 23I like it that she doesn't look like every other hollywood girl. She has a very unique look. It leaves room for women who aren't the standard tall, blonde type to feel like they might have a chance.

25I beg to differ allthatjez. Knightley does have the standard Hollywood look. It's shameful that out of the two main leads in Bend It Like Beckham, Knightley became the Hollywood-star and not the far prettier, in my opinion, Parminder Nagra. But that's Hollywood for ya!!!
26I just want to chime in and remind everyone that there are women who are naturally as thin as Keira, regardless of what they eat and if they are British, and they spend their entire lives fending off accusations of anorexia because they were born with a body-type that is considered just as "unhealthy" as someone who is obese.

28I have dealt personally with eating disorders and I can tell you all one thing, this girl has one and she is setting a very bad example for young girls who look up to her. I have become very frustrated to the point where I simply can't bring myself to read her interviews. I hope this poor girl can figure things out. She seemed to look fairly healthy in Bend it like Beckham. I wish her all the luck and hope she can come to a point of realization and recovery.

33Tink Again...Although I don't think she's anorexic, there are many, many levels of anorexia, and many can and do cope with and put themselves through brutally demanding physical activities. You see it in gymnast and athletes ALL the time...women who compete on a daily basis. So that excuse doesn't work.

All these talks about her are so funny to me.. Im 5'5 and my weight is just 110, but im noway sick or something, i have never been on a diet or spent hours in gym.

she was great in pride nd prejudice and bend it like beckham, not so much in the second and third potc, however she hs been constantly makig movies for the pst 5 years, she seems to have been with the same guy for ages, she has a lucrative Chanel deal and she seems level-headed, i admire her and don;t find her up herself at all, she's just frank, what did she say in this interview that ppl find "up-herself"? That she liked Domino? Everyone has different tastes, good on her for being proud of her work, she sure has worked a lot!
42I like her. Go Keira! 'Normal' body type can vary greatly for different people. Some people are just skinny. I absolutely hate it when people accuse me of being anorexic, when I most definitley am not.
43I agree, poisonivy - I cant hate anyone who was that perfect as Elizabeth in Pride & Prejudice. I thought she was pretty good in Pirates too, (the one that I saw, anyway).
I found the throw-my-blackberry-into-the-sea story funny and endearing. I hate my cell phone too, Keira! Lets be friends and totally never call each other!
