Gwyneth may split her time in London and the states since she married Chris Martin, but she still remembers where she comes from. Once again Gwyneth is on the defense for being misunderstood. She recently has come under fire for supposedly telling a Portuguese newspaper that, "The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans." And evidently she is "deeply" upset because she said that her comments were lost in translation. She's now determined to set the record straight. People reports:

"I felt so upset to be completely misconstrued and I never, ever would have said that," says the 34-year-old Oscar winner. "I definitely did not say that I think the British are more intelligent and civilized than Americans. I am a New York girl, that's how I always think of myself and see myself."
As for where the quotes came from, Paltrow says she did not give an interview to the Portuguese daily newspaper, though she did give a press conference – in Spanish – for an endorsement she did in Spain.
"This is what I said. I said that Europe is a much older culture and there's a difference. I always say in America, people live to work and in Europe, people work to live. There are positives in both," says the actress, adding, "Obviously I need to go back to seventh-grade Spanish!"
She also said she was proud to be an American. Gwyneth keeps getting herself into these types of messes. Perhaps it's time to get a translator!

Gwennie was always a snotty b!tch....I would not be surprised if she really did make those comments....they are true after all...JOKES
1
no hate mail please...I was kidding....got to put out a disclaimer as there are many
over sensitive people on here
2jk boogie you are so right, she is such a snotty c***...seriouly...I was backstage at a benefit concert for hunger about 5 years ago and she was one of the emcees of the night..she ordered stir-fry, and when they brought the food to her room, she screamed at the person "I said NO SAUCE!!!!!!!" and slammed the door in their face. She would love everyone to believe she is so wonderful and miss perfect but she is SO not. She makes me vomit in my own mouth.
3So, this has happened twice right? Yeah...she's a genius!
4Ummm, yeah, Gwyneth, you need to rememeber that is was AMERICA and AMERICAN capitalists that got you and your snotty a** where it is today.
5i love gwyneth, whether or not this is true.
this is how i see this though:
6i talk trash about my family ALL THE TIME. they drive me absolutely nuts, BUT i love them more than anything. if we can equate family to country, gwyn-haters can't stone her. if you can't talk trash about your own in public, who can you trash?
example of christmas with friend's family: i love your family. they're so sane. everyone just stews in old grudges at my family events, which ultimately culminates in overeating and overdrinking. can you please adopt me?
7ummm, I really don't think you can compare family to country. I know every member of my family personally. She's generalizing an entire country of people, and she's lived a sheltered, privileged existence. How many average Americans has she actually come in contact with? She's a fantastic actress (i'll give her that), but she's not famous for her superior intellect...she's just an actress.
8i've made generalizations about americans when i've seen them in other countries. it's certainly not all americans or even all the american tourists in said country. they trash the people or the country they're in speaking english as if they are the only english speaking people, they dress like they're in america and they speak VERY loudly. it's odd that other american tourists and i bemoan this, attributing it to the belief by americans that no one else matters/exists. well, those making these sweeping assumptions are americans. why don't we attribute it to the individuals?
i asked this question and the lady i was speaking to said it was because midwestern people weren't cultured. what kind of assessment is that? now it's not that they're american, but that they're midwestern? people attribute certain qualities superficially because it's easy.
9everyone is so over sensitive about america, why can't you say anything bad about it? what if she does think england is better than america? she can if she wants, and its nice that she's open minded to other cultures, and not just a blind patriot. anyway, i'm sure she did just speak crap spanish.
10Perhaps people need to stop jumping on her head, everythime she says something.

11meh, either way i still like gwen. i've never been to the UK so i don't know if it's different.
12theres something about gwen that really makes me dislike her... all her comments are random then when she thinks about what she said shes lile oppsss' i made a mistake.. bleh
13Well what can I say, the girl nows when to say the truth. I mean, what she said is not far from the truth! and what is the big deal about it, i say, Gwen, you go girl, but dont excuse yourself with the whole translation thing, hey you have been living and vacationing in Spain for quite some time so come on, if you feel that way there is no need to feel bad and go back on your words.
14You will always get the Truth from me!
I hate to say I told you so...According to the NY Daily News, the actress, who just finished directing a short film called Dealbreakers, flipped out when she spotted a box full of Cup-A-Soup on the set. "Who eats this stuff?" she demanded. When a crew member admitted that his kids were actually really into the additive-laden snack, Ms. Paltrow-Martin said – and you can wait for it, because it's totally worth it – "I would rather die than let my kid eat Cup-A-Soup."
15I thought Gwenzila was a nice American, until she opened her mouth.
Her opinion doesn't matter to me anyway. I don't care if she meant it or not.
16Even if it was true that she said this it wouldn't bother me. Everyone is entitled to their opinion esp if they have lived in both countries. Sometimes the blank over zealous patriotic stance SOME Americans take reminds me of the blank overly zealous stance terrorists take.. equally scary. Now watch my guestbook fill with hate mail.
17I thought she had lived in Spain for a bunch of years and that her spanish was perfect. She even talked with the spanish from spain accent... who cares what she says anyways

18she can say whatever she wants ... we should all be able to say what we want and voice our own individual opinion ... she is not going to change anyone else's opinion just by putting hers out there ... she is a celebrity but no one important that will change how people feel about their country. i do not take any offense to what she is saying ... she doesn't know me and i don't know her. puuuulease!
*nance*
19Who cares what she said, she needs a better stylist! That jeans tucked unto boots and long baggy sweater look is soooooo fug.
20I call a big fat BS on this whole "I was misquoted" mess. She's been anti-American before and will be again. She can go straight to hell. I used to love her, but no more.
21Gwyneth, shut yer trap before I shove an American-made boot down yer throat.
22LOL Ima, actually I totally agree with you. She's entitled to believe what she believes. I wish she wouldn't always backtrack on it, but whatever. Americans don't seem to mind other people saying ridiculously prejudiced things about them. Why get all up in arms when another American jumps on the bandwagon? Consistency would be nice.
23Ima, I agree. I watch this from the outside, but it seems, Americans treat celebrities (or whoever?) that speak about things they don't like about the States, like traitors. Its kind of scary, considering one of the great things about America is supposed to be free speech.
~Procrastinate Now! Don't Put It Off~ (Ellen)
24I can't stand her and her monotone drab voice. It matches her plain personality. She is a snob. She is an elitist who has never really had to work hard for anything in her life. She does even know what is like to be a real American and work for a living to provide for her family. She needs to get her nose out of the air and start seeing things for what they really are.
25England can have, we don't want her back. Both her and Madonna. Yuck!
She messed up, but, what most people don't know is that trash talking America is like a national sport in most other countries (second only to soccer). Everywhere I go, people are like "are you american?" as I wait in line at a restaurant/call a cab/go to a bar and then proceed to read me the riot act on why we are ALL so awful. So when an American goes and disses their own overseas, it's like gas on the fire.
26she is lying now. she speaks fluent spanish, having spent a time in spain as an exchange student, and she has spoken fluent spanish on a few interview shows on tv.
plus, why would a press conference for a portugese newspaper be in spanish and not portugese or english?
her story doesn't make much sense.
27hahahhahaha, maybe she has a love/hate relationship with america-- weirder things have happened. She is entitled to her opinion, I could give two sh*ts about it.... but the comment, "midwesterners are not cultured"? I DO take offense to that, since when is chicago a non-cultured city!? I am no midwestern-farmers daughter.
28She said the same bad stuff about America to other magazines in other countries. She is lying now and that is just sad. I hope the other countries she's slamming America to are printing what she is saying to PEOPLE. It would be awesome if they called her out on her lie. I haven't liked her since the last time she trashed americans.
29LaurenG, take some solace in knowing that most people don't consider Chicago to be in the "midwest". I don't know why that is, but for some reason the rest of Illinois is. *Southside baby!!*
30Johnny Dep did the same thing after he got criticized for comparing the French to the Americans (and insulting Americans). Once he realized what he said he came back with all these defensive remarks...
raspberries
to both Dep & Paltrow
31meh, i liked living in japan way better than here. i think there's nothing wrong with having preferences and opinions.
32Gwenyth can say if she like the UK more fine whatever but I always felt like she was a snotty concieted woman.
33I agree word for word with griffin73's post. I could care less about what her's or anyone else's opinion of americans is.It is definitely not going to cause me to regret being what i am and where i live. As for Gwen I still think she's a friggin moron. Yes, people are very much entitled to their thoughs and opinions, but sometimes you just need to know when the hell to shut your piehole.........
34how many times is she been "misquoted" bashing america... we get it gwynnie your not a fan.
35I don't give a tinker's damn about what this concited elitist woman thinks! Sure the US isn't perfect (I'll be the 1st to admit that!). But yeah, why is she bemoaning her lack of Spanish? It was a PORTUGUESE magazine!! Portugeuse & Spanish are close in writing, but not when spoken.
36If she really thinks what she said, then she should stand behind it & not give some lame BS excuse about mis-translation
here here sashak ... i am totally with you on that!
*nance*
37well it is true there is more culture in Europe, America is the "new world" , so naturally we have less history and culture. To be honest, Gwynnie's remarks started AFTER G.W. came in office, and I too am ebarrassed by this regime. Call me unpatriotic if you want, I LOVE AMERICA, but I do not like who is running the joint and I certainly can see how other countries think we idiots. We have an idiot running the country, and WE(not) elected him. America has been built on materialistic values. Sorry if I have offended anyone.
38" think we idiots "- that was a mistake LOL
39I hear you mar....
40excatly, Mar. Is it 2008 yet?
41I just think that she should stand behind her opinions or explain them or elaborate on them, not make excuses...
She's going to pay for those remarks in ticket sales. She's already not well liked by many. Now it will be even worse. She'll be doing lifetime movies in a few year anyways. And when her husbunds group can't sell any more records I wonder if she'll dump him because he's not successful anymore. I think she is that shallow. She only cares about the limelight and how she looks in the public.
I hope she saved her money because it better keep them warm through the cold front coming. Lord nows she wasn't made a hit movie in a while. She only does Artsy crap these days like Wes Anderson pictures.
She's so vanilla and plain. Yuck!
42well as for this i just would like to say for gwyneth to remember to not bite the hand that feeds her. as an American who has traveled and lived abroad , we hear enough criticism as it is..i love the idea of free speech but honey, you chose to be celebrity which comes with some drawbacks.. oh YES everyone will know what you SAID.. keep this to yourself and take the time for more important ventures.. such as "creative" baby names.. perhaps.."lemon or grapefruit" might be a new addition to the family..
so when can we expect to hear the "fake" British accent?.. "cough, cough...Madonna...cough"

44Umm did anyone notice that she said she had to go back to 7th grade spanish when it was a portuguese news paper! they don't speak spanish! she is a complete dolt!
45lol
46i really dont think that any public figure would make a comment like this im a press conference ummm hello thats soo stupid...for someone like gwen who has been in the public eye for SOOO long this would be such an amateur move...something she would never do...and besides shes american sooo if she were to say something like this for real she would be insulting herself and her fam just as much
47I do love Gwynnie. she may say anything,i don't care she's got a pear instead of brain :)******
