Sadly, as the full story surrounding Donda West's untimely passing inevitably comes to light, it's beginning to look like something shady went down. Last night, Kanye's family released a statement thanking everyone for their kind words and asking that donations be made in her name to the Kanye West Foundation in lieu of flowers. Soon after that, the surgeon who operated on Donda, Dr. Jan Adams, came forward saying that he had done nothing wrong and that the death was unforeseen and probably due to heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or massive vomiting.

Now, TMZ has already uncovered the fact that the surgery took twice as long as it should have, indicating trouble on the table, and that Adams sent West home afterwards rather than to a recovery center. She died the next evening. Also, Adams has been convicted of two DUIs as recently as 2006. He's also lost two malpractice suits and last April the Medical Board of California asked to revoke his license following the DUIs. I'm sure this is just the beginning of tearing through Adams' personal and professional life looking for dirt, I just hope that if Kanye and his family want answers about this horrible tragedy, they are able to find them. And if they want people to give it peace, hopefully that wish is respected too.

This is soo sad, My thoughts and prayers go out to Kanye and his family.
1Im really mixed about Jan Adams. I have been watching him for a couple of years now on Discovery Health. I also don't believe 100% of what TMZ posts. They only show the negative and not any positive of someone. Although I do believe that something went wrong, I don't think that someone getting a DUI has any indication on their ability to perform plastic surgery. I drink too, does that mean I don't preform at my job?
2Many more women die from pulminary embolism (blood clot that travels to the lung) following lipo than what most data suggests.
Since they die a while after surgery, the cause of death isn't listed as complications from lipo. It is listed as pulminary embolism. It is a very dangerous procedure, and it makes me sick how I hear all of the discount advertisements on the radio.
3This is why it is so important to investigate your doctors. Go to your state's medical board and look them up!
4Also, this proves that plastic surgery is not serious surgery. If you want that many procedures done have them broken up into several small ones. This may cost more, but what is more important money or your life?????
Is your life more important than "looking good"?
" I don't think that someone getting a DUI has any indication on their ability to perform plastic surgery."
I agree.
But I do think that if the surgery had complications, she shouldn't have been sent home.
5Oops! Proves that plastic surgery IS serious!!!
6I do feel deeply for the West family, but I don't think that this should be brought to public eye. Respect the loss and leave it private.
7DUI's do affect doctors! Do you want your doc drunk or hungover before your surgery???? If you have repeat DUI's you have a drinking problem and need help!!!
8sooo messed up!
9It is unfortunate that she didn't do more investigating in a doctor
10The woman just died an untimely death and no doubt her son is grieving, do we really need to hear what the surgeon has to say?? Seriously sometimes I don't blame celebs for loosing their cool because there is absolutely no such thing as privacy or respect for one's privacy left anymore. My heart goes out to Kanye, loosing a parent is devastating enough but to loose your mama like that is so hard to deal with. Bless her soul, she went to soon!!!
11This doctor may be shady...because from what im reading, Kanye's mother was turned down for plastic surgery by another doctor because of her having a "medical condition"....so she went to this one who went ahead and did it. I'm sorry for Kanye's loss...but listen to your doctor's people! Plastic surgery isnt worth it...not one bit and this is proof!
12Well I drink too, but that doesn't mean I do something stupid like get behind the wheel of a car. Doctors, whether you agree with it or not, are held to a higher moral standard, as many of them really do deal with life and death situations. A DUI doesn't make this doctor a "bad" doctor per se, but anyone who can make such a reckless decision has to be questioned on some level.
I also agree with Naima...let them seriously have their privacy first, THEN let all of these people duke it out in the press. Jeez.
13I always thought Kanye was such a jerk, but this hit me hard. I felt sad all day. I'm sorry for his loss. My parents are in India for a two month vacation, and I miss them so dearly.
14This is terrible. I also read that she was turned down by another surgeon for a medical condition. I don't understand why if she was not healthy enough for one doctor why she would go to someone else and have it done.
One of my friends mom died during a tummy tuck. People don't realize that these surgeries are serious and you can be risking your life by having one.
I feel so bad for Kanye and his family.
15Sad. This all must be very difficult for him.
16I really feel for Kanye. Yes, he is super arrogant, but all his songs mention his Mom and how she was the only one that believed in him. That's really a shame, and for plastic surgery? Definitely not worth it.
17I think ebefore we start to play the blame game we must remember that there were a number of people involved in this process and a lot of factors we don't know about and might never know about. Donda was told it was a dangerous procedure and toled to see an internist she chose not to do so. Jan Adams chose to do this surgery knowing there was arisk and Donda chose to take it. Noone held a gun to her head and Jan was not drunk or hungover during this procedure as far as we know so the DUIs have no relevancy to this story whatsoever. He had malpractice but youwould think Donda had all the resources she needed to investigate him and find this out. It's sad and it's tragic but this happens to a lot of people out there. She knew the risks and she took them. Until and unless they find something wrong I think they should Jan alone.
18Wow this is so tragic. I feel awful for Kayne West. Going into any surgery whether it's cosmetic or medical has it's own risks especially when you get anesthesia. I hope if this surgeon did something wrong he gets the proper punishment although someone commented on blood clots happening to women especially those over weight. I just got my appendix removed and those where one of the risks the anesthesiologist said. I'm not over weight but they put these special massage stocking on my legs that would help prevent such thing. Scary. My condolences.
19wow. sad.
20what a shame..i pray he grieve in peace...for his sake..and the family.
21And this guy wasn't certified?????
22I thought about this story a lot yesterday — just couldn't get it out of my head. It's so sad because the death was unnecessary. And then I started thinking about how accomplished and intelligent Dr. West was, and how loved she was by her son... and yet she still felt pressure to look a certain way. No matter how you feel about plastic surgery, I think everyone can agree that her death is a reminder that it's not as simple as TV makes it seem. It's still surgery, and it does have risks.
23yes i agree with bella...and i hope people will take that in consideration.
24I just feel bad for their loss. I do agree though. a DUI doesnt mean that you are a hack. but it is dishonest to state there are no complications, then we find out the surgery time was twice as long as normal. and then to hear that he has two previous malpractice suits that were lost is CRAZY. i just feel bad for the family. too bad our perceptions of self image get twisted and yanked around to where we believe we need these surgeries to be happy with ourselves and images. just a testament of our society today
25What a tragic event this is, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family in this time of need. It is sad enough without all the news coverage, but maybe it will serve a purpose to others that think these surgeries are not complicated.
26this whole thing just sickens me, it was completely preventable and if one person can learn from this tragedy than maybe her death wont be in vain.
27This death hit me hard as well. Again, the West family are in thoughts are prayers.
This is a wake up call. I think its time some people start taking this whole plastic surgery thing seriously. When we watch shows like Dr. 90210 we hardly see any complications occur, the patients are back on their feet, seems like, the next day! It’s a painful and complicated procedure! To those who are considering getting anything done really need understand that you’re risking your life. Research your doctors/surgeons
Sometimes, if diet and exercise can’t get rid of it then learn to love it!
28Truthfully, for me, the part that the surgery took twice as long as normal is not a cause for concern. I had dental surgery that took twice as long as normal, and I turned out okay. The surgery was successful, and my recovery was smooth. Just my 2 cents.
29there was no explanation as to why your surgery took twice as long?
30My prayers go out to Kanye West and his family
31its really sad. Why is it that theres always some drama whe a celebrity/family memeber dies..they never go naturally...
32Dr. Adams sounds pretty sketchy, and I certainly wouldn't see him for a major surgery after researching him. However, we don't know all of the details of what happened and I want to point out that he didn't lose two malpractice suits, he settled two suits.
While that means that the plaintiffs were able to state some credible cause of action, many of these suits get settled because insurance companies do not want to risk losing millions in front of a jury, usually juries are sympathetic to a plaintiff and might not get to hear the full story anyway. I know some good doctors who have settled the most ridiculous suits, just because it is much more cost-effective, if you lose one of these suits you could lose everything.
I wish there were a great way to really research doctors. Whenever I check reviews online, I can never tell how biased they are, or how representative of the population they are.
It is easy to forget what a major surgery plastic surgeries can be...I think I'll stick with Spanx if I need something beyond diet and exercise. It makes me really not want to watch Dr. 90210 ever again!
The West family is in my thoughts and heart right now.
33gosh, that is so sad.
34my prayers go out to kanye and the rest of his family.
35Kanye's mom had multiple surgeries done...not just one procedure. She had breast augmentation AND a tummy tuck. I have heard that doing more than one procedure is super hard on the body...HECK, one is hard enough!! With being told that she should see an "internist", yet chose not to....Its just so hard to believe that a smart woman like that would go to someone who wasnt credible...BUT, the pressures to be thin and beautiful can push women to do the craziest things. so who knows? Its truly sad.
36That is very sad. RIP. That being said, here is the unpopular response. As I hear it, she had gone to a number of other doctors and they all recommended that she not go forward with the surgery because of her previous medical history. When does it actually become the individuals responsibility to take charge for their health? I am sure she knew about the possible complications and went forward anyway. There is gotta be some assumption of risk on her part. Although I was not there, just because she died later on does not make it his fault. Moreover, most people that have the kind of surgery she had are sent home.
Btw, this doctor is a reputable doctor and just cause it took longer does not mean there were complications. I also do not believe that having a DWI makes you a bad doctor -- unless you are drinking at work and there is no evidence of that. Finally, I used to work at a hospital as assistant general counsel and doctors settle malpractice claims all the time -- even when there is no fault on their part -- that means nothing at all. Most times it is cheaper to pay than go forward. This is usually the decision of the malpractice carrier -- not the doctor who usually objects to any such settlement because people may think, as apparently was the case here, that they "lost" a suit or did something wrong.
37What a terrible loss! I was shocked to read this a couple days ago.
It's unfortunate that the media is already speculating on the cause of death prior to the autopsy being completed. The talking heads on the news are already pointing fingers - Was the doctor at fault??? Did Ms. West hide a prior condition??? Seems there will be plenty of time to assess blame when the facts are in. The family needs a quick minute to grieve without being bombarded with all of these questions.
38i totally agree with you nyara. while it is very sad, she was told to see an internist by another doctor who refused to perform her operation - perhaps she was so desperate to get the procedure that she left out part of her medical history (since she's had multiple surgeries, i wouldn't rule it out). before people burn dr. adams at the stake, we should remember that this was an ELECTIVE surgery and that his past indescretions do not necessarily reflect on how he practices now. yes, DUIs are bad, but is there any evidence that he has entered into an operating room under the influence of any substance? if not, then hold your judgement. and the CA medical board revoking his license is a fairly common reaction to DUIs - the same punishment would be handed down if it were a lawyer who had done the same thing.
and as for the malpractice suits, doctors get sued all the time - whether or not they actually did something wrong. since this guy is a plastic surgeon, he might very well have been sued simply because the results did not meet patient expectations. who knows - we don't have all the facts surrounding the lawsuits.
i agree that this is a very sad situation and as someone else pointed out, hopefully this will bring to light the seriousness of cosmetic surgery.
39Very sad, you lost your best friend and your rock, please remeber that we all have to go one day, there is time for everyone to live this world, we all are living in temporarly house, some die young like your mom, some die old, regardless who we are we all have to go some day, it happen to be her turn. the reason i am saying this i know how it feels to loose someone close to you, you will never be the same person againg, your life is change forever. it's painful process you just need time greif and, you have to selebrate herlife and best time you spent together, at least you are lucky she was around to see your secuess, remeber that she will alway's will be wtih you. I know you belive in God and she is going to be resting with him.
40God Bless you,
Stay strong
Remeber nothing last forever::
I hope this gets straightened out soon. The last thing this family needs is people publicly shifting blame. They should just do a strict investigation, and settle this with his family soon. And if someone did show negligence, then they should pay for it when it comes to their license.
41May she rest in peace and may God help Kanye through these difficult times. BTW, not a breast augmentation as mentioned earlier-she had a breast reduction.....
42when i had plastic surgery it took twice as long as it should have, that said, i also knew the risks going into it and researched who my doctor was beforehand.
43Horrible situation.
