Javier Bardem seems to be everywhere these days but that is expected when a man has two movies to promote, and for Javier, talking about Love in the Time of Cholera and the new Coen Brothers film No Country for Old Men seems to be a full-time job. Javier opened up to Mean Magazine about the Coens, meeting the author of the book on which their film is based, and what he brings to a movie. Here's more:
- On the Coen brothers: "The Coens are by far my favorite directors... Something happened to me the first time I saw Blood Simple, Fargo, Miller's Crossing. It was like, 'Who the hell are these guys? How are they able to create such unique characters and make them so enjoyable to watch, even when they are the most cruel m************ of all time?'"
- On meeting Cormac McCarthy: "I would have been able to overwhelm him with thousands of questions, except that the thing was flowing already. It was like, don't be too anxious to control the character, because the controls are in someone else's hands. So don't worry. Trust. Like Bruce Lee said: 'Be like water.' Which is a beautiful way to say, 'Flow man.'"
- On what he brings to a role: "I have this big bulldog face, this broken nose, and I thought, okay, let me use it to my advantage. If I play against it, then it works like a visa — I can always get back to this place."
While we wouldn't go so far as to say Javier's face resembles a bulldog, there is definitely something offbeat about his charm. And apparently we're not the only ones who like it, as Penelope Cruz seems to be holding on tightly to her man.

5I dunno what other movie I recognize him from, but the moment I saw the preview for Coen bros film and his face I knew I had to watch it. His face is striking in that mysterious broken way. Dunno what I mean by that but lets just say he looks like a real man and not some fake and bake pretty boy. Yay real men!
6He seems really deep, and he's really hunky. He has a Clive Owen-gone-Spanish look to him!
7Lmao @ your dp, SoniaBonya.
8Thank you UrbanBohemian!! I wrote that on one of his others post an so many people were like "Noooo!!! Clive Owen is hotter."
But I totally always thought he was the Latin version of Clive Owen. (And I'm a huge fan of Clive..hee) Both are manly men and don't have classic good looks but they are rugged and hot because they have those smoldering eyes and seem mysterious.
I also always thought that Benicio Del Toro is the Latin version of Brad Pitt...I've gotten flak for that as well..LOL! Oh well.
Ok, back to the topic at hand, I can't wait to see both of his new movies.
9haha I like your comment tiabia you are so right
10Oh yes jmast! Benicio is a Latin version of Brad Pitt!!!
11Great Actor..!
12Yeah..I agree with previous comments this guy is a real man not like those pretty boys i.e. Hayden Christensen/Ashton Kutcher types. I love that there are so many more javier posts yay!!!
13Thanks gatara!!! I don't feel so alone now..hee
14was his right pinkie finger cut off at the knuckle?
15Penelope's got herself a catch
16Watch the Sea Inside...even as a man paralized in bed for 20 years his charm is seductive, an amazing performance.
17Penelope is very lucky
18Y'all are totally right. He has become my new favorite It Guy .
19He was indeed in Goya's Ghosts.
Definitely a Spanish Clive Owen...and I love Clive too...
Javier is always badmouthing his face, but he must admit it's working for him.
And yes to the real men, pretty boys are so two years ago.
mañana mismo, sólo para joder a la Iglesia
20He's soo hot! I love his deep voice!
I love him on 'Love in the Time of Cholera.' Gosh im like so in love with books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. His books are like food for thought.
21oh javier, swoon.. if you ever get tired of Penelope call me.
22Don´t worry Paine, she will be tired of him soon, love him in "Los lunes al sol", he made me cry and laugh a lot, It´s a "too spanish" movie, so i´m not sure if recommend it to people because it´s like to see a Ken Loach film, you feel real touched if you know or have lived the situation, anyway he´s a great actor and deserves this sudden attention, hope it lasts.
23He's such an amazing actor...saw "No Country for Old Men" last night and he scared the bejeezus out of me. That oxygen tank...creepy!!
24he is strangly attractive
25oops, sorry, strangely...don't think he's trying to choke anyone
26Who!
And no he isn't all that.
