Natalie Portman's photoshoots have been high on the cute factor lately, posing with puppies and riding around on bikes. They fit right in with the theme of her new movie Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, but this Sunday's The New York Times Style Magazine showcases a different side of the star. Natalie has always seemed like one of Hollywood's more mature young stars, and this article and photoshoot are no exception. Here are highlights:
- On growing up:
"I was once told that the age you are is the age you were when you became who you are. Does that mean I am perpetually 11? I'm not sure I want to have that strict an image. In the movie business, there is such a temptation to stick with a particular persona. There is a kind of artistic branding." - On shaving her head:
"Being bald was great, but the regrowth was the problem. My hair is very curly, and I'd have to have someone iron it if I wanted it to be straight. There was a lot of head-burning. And I started craving hair. I wanted to feel like a girl again." - On death scenes:
"I've died many times. I died in Closer, but they changed the ending and, miraculously, I lived. I also died in Star Wars and in Cold Mountain. Death scenes are not more difficult than other scenes. It's much harder to laugh than cry. I find it so hard to fake laughing. I have no laugh except my own, and that laugh is very particular, very modern. It's hard to make any other laugh sound real. It's like sneezing: you really only have one sneeze."
Natalie always comes across as wise beyond her years, even if she is only eleven at heart. Do you like these more serious photos of Natalie, or do you prefer her more fun-loving side?
Natalie also sat down with the newspaper for a video interview to talk about her childhood, her favorite sounds and her happiest times. To watch it just read more

I love absoluetly love Natalie Portman! She is beautiful, a great actress, and her look is so unique. I would turn lesbian for her and that says a lot because if you don't look like a model I don't consider you hot.
1I can't wait for her to get those mature roles when she grows still... And she'll be a Killer beauty ten years later.
2go natalie
3She's cute! I love her...
4She looks great. Love her!
5
her
6These pictures show her off much better than those cutesy ones from a couple of wks ago.
7she's got such great bone structure - truly beautiful woman.
I like Natalie, but what the heck is a "modern" laugh?!
8i like her
9yeah, your laugh is modern? does that mean it's like, better than the rest of our ho hum old laughs? she's got the latest laugh girls, better work on yours if you want to be an "it" girl!
10I think she meant that her laugh is probably louder or more baudy than say the laugh of a woman in Victorian times. And she's right, a laugh is something that is uniquely your own.
11i have an old fashioned laugh.. i think..
i adore Natalie.. she's perfection..
12I know a lot of people like her, but she seems like someone who's full of herself...actually, I know someone who went to Harvard with her, and they said just that.
I do like her movies (except Garden State) and this photoshoot though!
13This girl is awesome! Such a great role model
14Can someone please interpret what the hell she's talking about?
"I was once told that the age you are is the age you were when you became who you are."
15love her!
16İt sounds as if she has practised that line before she said it and thought that sounds profound ill use it
17Oooh, I like these pictures a lot more than the cute ones she has done lately. Plus, she's great.
18Great pictures.
19I was rewatching the Star Wars flicks and i have to say her acting was the WORST in those movies. Hers and Hayden Christensen....both were terrible and they had virtually no chemistry. Still...i love me some star wars movies!! Havent seen many other movies with her in it though....she just doesnt spark my interest. Cute photos here though...
20She's my favorite, and I think she looks great!
21These pics look good. Umm..but I don't remember her dying in Cold Mountain! Did I miss something?
22she is so glamorous here:)
23I thought that first picture was Charlize Theron.
24Beautiful but goofy!..........But then again, I guess it's better then showing us crotch shots and drunkenly wrecking her car!
25Her interviews always sound like some spiritual lession on being wise. You are adorable natalie, but lighten up a little
26She is adorable...almost, but not quite, too adorable. I do like her movies though...
whatever100: I think she was saying that you stay (mentally) the age you were when you found yourself. I really did figure out who I am until I was 27 so I guess I will always "be" 27...lol...better than being 11 I guess...
27Thanks, Jennifer777. You make way more sense than she does.
28I didn't think she died in Cold Mountain. I suppose I could be wrong...
29she looks way better in these pics. diiinggggggg!!!!is all i have to say
30The composition of these photographs are so evocative! I love the blue shadows and the picture with the doves!
31she is pretty awesome.
32She is so beautiful in this photoshoot, the best i´ve seen of her lately.
33Yeah Holls, in Cold Mountain I think she shot herself didn't she? I just remember Jude Law sitting on the porch all upset before he went on his way again.
That photo of her with the birds is one of the most beautiful pictures from a celebrity photoshoot I've seen in a long time. For some reason it reminds me of the one of Kate Winslet in Vanity Fair where she was suspended in a tank full of water (it was the year Titanic came out of course!)
34I love this girl. I don't think it's that she's truly full of herself, but she seems reserved and well spoken without being self-deprecating, and that can sometimes be received as being snotty or stuck up.
35She died in Cold Mountain?
I had to read through that first sentence several times before I understood it. It sounds like she was trying too hard to be profound.
I love Natalie Portman, she seems like a really mature woman and she is a great actress (mostly). The only thing I have to say is that I'm disappointed that she did a nude scene after years of stating she wouldn't do one. I know people change their minds as they grow older but there are barely any actresses nowadays who will refuse to do nudity (I can't think of any other besides SJP and Jessica Alba).
36I like that photo of just her face, the make up is amazing!
37I thought Natalie was good in SW movies and I adored her with Hayden those that thought there was no chemistry in my book were wrong..I think there was a ton of it..It's not her fault of Hayden's for the bad dialogue..Give them another movie together I think they would explode in the chemisty department..
I love the photo's of Natalie you can tell how well she has matured over the years..I adore her..she is such a good role model for young girls..
38I like her too. She's a great actress.
39that's probably a given thing in the movie business. They often say things that at the moment seems right and appropriate. Just like Natalie about nudity. But when time comes when one feels she is ready things turns the other way around. I like Natalie Portman a lot because just when people wanted her to flaunt her body at such tender age she didn't and for me that was a good decision. And she proved that good things happen when you wait, she did a little nudity and then earned her an Oscar nod.
40I think she pretty good. At least from the few things I've seen her in.
41I find it so hard to fake laughing.
xDDDD No, sweetie. You find hard to fake everything, you're a terrible actress.
