Oprah Winfrey hit the Barack Obama campaign trail this weekend, starting in Des Moines on Saturday before hitting South Carolina and New Hampshire on Sunday. In Iowa she spoke to 10,000 and by the time she got to SC there were 30,000 out to watch the media mogul support the presidential candidate. Even Oprah herself admitted to being nervous up there, but quickly gained momentum during her 17 minute speech where she was anything but shy about her support of and admiration for Barack. She said, "There are those who say it's not his time, that he should wait his turn. Think about where you'd be in your life if you'd waited when people told you to...I'm sick of politics as usual...We need Barack Obama."
Going on, "I understand the difference between the Book Club and a free refrigerator...I understand the difference between that and this critical moment in our nation's history...Over the years, I have voted for as many Republicans as I have Democrats...This isn't about partisanship for me. This is very, very personal. I'm here because of my personal conviction about Barack Obama and what I know he can do for America." While Oprah is just about as big as it gets in terms of star power, who knows what kinds of celebrities she'll inspire. Will Smith, for one, is ready to pack his bags at a moment's notice to join Obama. What do you think — were you paying attention to the Oprah-bama tour this weekend?

didn't follow it, i try to avoid this type of media and read more objective pieces on the candidates from unattached sources. but he sure has star backing and i think he's a great speaker.
1I find it interesting that you would simply post about this candidate. Maybe you should avoid it altogether.
2
i might have to vote repblican
3I'm so tired of what candidates the celebrities support.
4Yea, I'm Canadian sooooo I don't really care
5I think it'll be interesting to see if Oprah's endorsement is able to deliver votes. I'm sure people were excited to see Oprah, and I'm sure they'd be interested to hear what she said whether she supported a Democrat, Republican, Green or whoever! That said, I like to think that most people would vote for the candidate whose issues they support, not solely because of celebrity endorsement. Obama probably was able to get his message out with her help—and that's a huge win for him—but it all comes down to what happens at the voting booth.
6Oprah is a bloated tick. Who cares what she thinks. The crowd probably thinks that they will walk away with some of the crap that Oprah shills for on her excuse for a show.
7I'm sorry, did Oprah say something? I've become immune to her sanctimonious self serving stumping.
8I think Obama is the best candidate. He has a TON of common sense, and doesn't play politics like so many others. I think American politics have become so extreme in either direction, and that isn't what most Americans want.
He has tons of intellegence, and I really think he has made the best choices in his career so far. Those people that say he doesn't have enough experience forget that both Bush Jr. and Bill Clinton were only Governors before taking the presidency.
9Obama is a senator he never run a city or state.. at least bill and george had that going for them... he had missed a majority of the votes in the senate
10Oprah's "fans" are mindless lemmings who buy into whatever she happens to be peddling at the time. It's pathetic. Oprah's a bloated self-serving, self-righteous cow.
11A celebrity endorsement like hers could become a blip in political history... it can also signify something much larger in how we support politics in this country.
I am fascinated to see what happens.
12An US Senator has a higher ranking on the political food chain, than a Governor. A Governor is more of a local politician. Senators deal with national/federal issues, create federal laws, policies etc. They are actually more qualified to run the country, when you think about it. A governor makes decisions that impact their repective state population, Senators makes decisions that impact everyone in the country. I believe Hilary Rodham Clinton is a Senator as well.
13call me prejudiced - but does anyone else notice that she's never supported a presidential candidate publicly until it was black man running for president? is that the agenda she's pushing?
oh and lol at the "i've voted for many republicans" yeah because they'll protect her billions, right?
14Seriously, if Oprah said to drink the Koolaid, a zillion women across the States would do it. And hope for a refrigerator. I feel she shouldn't be going on the campaign trail with him. I wish celebs would just stay out of it.
And poor Barack Obama if he becomes the next James Frey.
15Celebrity Support doesnt really mean anything. Your Governor actually has the most potential influence on which way you go. As for Oprah, I have always been a big fan and the decision will not change that however I do not support her decision to back Obama. I am not going to engage in a political debate but her choice in my mind is far from being based on the issues. If he is elected it will be a sad day for this country.
16"Seriously, if Oprah said to drink the Koolaid, a zillion women across the States would do it. And hope for a refrigerator. I feel she shouldn't be going on the campaign trail with him. I wish celebs would just stay out of it."
I completely agree.
Not that there's a shot that I'd support Obama either way.
17BTW Blob your statements are sadly true.. luckily the only thing I buy into is her book club. And it would be a cold day in hell before Id ever support Obama.
18Zahara, I think you're forgetting John F. Kennedy?
And--why do you think senators should not be president? Just curious--I like Joe Biden myself.
19Dont Forget Lyndon Johnson and um Nixon too.
20JFK was a sitting Senator when he won the election, I'm pretty certain he wasn't the only one, just one who came to mind.
21i don't think senators shouldn't be president... someone brought up the experience thing and i mention that george and bill were both governors
22I love Oprah, but her support of someone/something is not enough of a reason for me to feel the same way. I can think for myself and make my own decisions. Obama seems like an authentic guy with some interesting ideas, but I question his experience level. I just don't think he's seen enough or done enough to qualify him (at this time) to become President. Sorry, but he won't get my vote regardless of Oprah's support.
23I LOVE Obama and Oprah did a great job supporting him - I like her more than ever. Her speech (that I saw - maybe she had more than one) was very well presented and well thought out. She said she has never done that before for a political candidate, but she knows we need a change!
24PS clarpl - I like Biden, too.
my bad there was seven sitting senators that became presidents
25I'm all about Obama, but it really has nothing to do with Oprah...who I am not a big fan of, with her pushing her new age beliefs so much lately (The Secret, Eat Pray Love, A Course in Miracles). That said, I would now feel uncomfortable voting for him if he is endorsed by Oprah. It's all a conspiracy!
26Hmm you said sitting Senator didnt you..yeah thats different.

28"An US Senator has a higher ranking on the political food chain, than a Governor."
Agreed. And Senators will have more expeirence dealing with National concerns and international relations than a Governor would. I think he is more than qualified.
I think Obmama is incredibly smart, and doesn't just spit out the easy answer that makes partisans so happy. He is realistic and objective, and I think that is so important to finding the "right" answers to getting our country out of the mess we are in.
29I don't need Oprah's help to make up my mind-- whether it's about books or politics-- but she is very influential and has a lot of fans. I have a lot of respect for her. But I don't think it will translate directly into votes, at all.
30I think it's great that some of you as Oprah's fans won't let that influence you. But I'm just wondering about all her fans as a whole. I personally know women that swear by everything Oprah says and does. I didn't mean to offend anyone, I'm just stating it from my point of view.
31I think it's a shame when a candidate has to depend on star power to try and get votes. That says alot!!!!!!
32I heard a clip of Oprah's speech. I don't like how she uses different accents depending which audience she wants to reach. It's sort of insulting.
33steviasweet, my hubby said the same thing. That annoys me to no end.
34Am I the only one on here that loves Oprah?? Jeez. haha
Anyway, I don't think this will give him many more votes, but it gives him some more visibility that he needs to get ahead in the polls. I'm sure Hillary is pissed that Oprah didn't support the female candidate!!
35I don't think celebrities should announce who they will be voting for, full stop. Boo.
36Celebs have every right to publicly support which ever candidate they want to. However, I think that the "celeb endorsement" thing is way to distracting to the race.
37she shouldn't have done this... now i dislike her even more.... TEAM CLINTON!
38I just want to see how she acts SHOULD Hilary win the nomination...you know she will have to throw her support behind Hilary then. I bet Hilary will get a nice donation!!
I wish all of the stars would learn to keep their political opinion to themselves. We just don't care!!
39I don't mind celebs endorsing a cause. Often I even appreciate that they made an effort to use their status for good.
But I don't like the way that Oprah uses her status to swing people to support the products she likes, be it books, politicians or cars. She's not always thorough in her research and has had to backtrack a few times.
People say Hilary is polarizing, but I find Oprah's babbling so annoying that it makes me like Obama even less.
40yikes. oprah is NOT trying to make up your minds. you are all adults. you can vote for him or you can not vote for him.
benna. i do not think that obama is depending on O to do anything for him. you people are ridiculous. i heard his speech and it was awesome. he has so much so say, unlike that dried up Clinton. Who played the "woman card."
OBAMA '08.
41I dont think he is depending on her but maybe he feels he should get all the help he can .. which is what any candidate should do. She has a right to voice her support as does any of us.
42Oprah is trying to get Obama elected so of course she is trying to make people vote for him. Just like Streisand will try to help Hillary win. Unfortunately, Oprah's fans drank the koolaid and Bab's fans don't give a sh*t what she thinks.
43Ha Ha Ha Ginger ... thank you you made me giggle this afternoon. She cares about the country GREAT we get that. All of the goodwill she does is awesome. Why now has she gone political... makes you wonder.
44Hopefully Oprah's support might encourage people who would otherwise ignore politics to get out there and learn about the issues.
45Realistic and Objective? He is a politician and says what you want hear. He has all the right answers ... exactly what you expect and want him to say.
46I agree TLS this is right up there with ROCK THE VOTE.
47how cool
48you people are ridiculous.
No. Opinions are exactly what they are, opinions. And just because you don't agree doesn't make that opinion ridiculous.
Personally, I do not like Obama. I don't trust him any more than I trust ANYONE running. He is every bit as self serving as the others, he is just perhaps a little more adept at hiding it, although three books all about him speak to the contrary. His speeches are sermons - all sound and fury signifying nothing. He says nothing - just regurgitates the same "Obama party line" over and over. It's time for a change. OK - WHAT exactly will this change encompass? And just how does he intend to make said changes?
At this point in time, I don't like ANYONE running, though I find Edwards to be less repulsive than most.
49the bottom line is no one is getting anyone voted. the reason why oprah is helping is because america has the attention span of a 4 year old and *many* people do not care about politics. if it gets more people who normally do not care about politics to come to a rally, she is serving america proud. most of hillary voters are the same demographic that oprah reaches: high school diploma, make $40k or less, 50+ women. i think obama's strategy is smart.
and GINGER, if it were the case that celebrities could easily sway the american voters, how come no one listened to celebrities then when people voted for the current administration...TWICE! Because most voters just see a 20 second spiel on tv and decide who they will vote for.
how many of you could list off any senators other than your own? have anyone of you guys attended a political rally? i bet some of you even voted for bush, but can't admit it now.
i'm tired of people saying things they know nothing about. just stick to your celebrity gossip and leave it at that.
