Jessica Simpson is not pleased with a recent tabloid story claiming boyfriend Tony Romo dumped her after his team lost their shot at the Super Bowl. Her lawyers wrote a letter to the magazine, which published the article to insist that the story be retracted because Jessica and Tony are still very much together. Jessica has experienced first hand the toll that living a relationship in the public eye can take, but is she overreacting to tabloid rumors?

Yes she is over reacting, but i would not consider her a huge star by any means. I picked other.
1I wouldn't say she is a "huge" star...but if she's learned anything by now it should be that it "comes with the territory". She's a press wh*re..she seems to thrive off of any form of press...good or bad.
2I logged on just to say what qbert just did - she is by no means a "huge star". Huge stars generally pull in more than $6500 on a movie. Anyway, she's just doing this to keep her name in the press. It's very pathetic. I don't know much about Tony Romo, but it seems that Jessica has this ability to turn fairly normal, intelligent men into total morons. Fortunately, they seem to snap out of it eventually.
3She's in the public eye and she should just deal with it.
4She should fire her father then see about a normal relationship.
5For a suit like this, she not only has to prove it wasn't true, but she has to prove that the magazine KNEW it wasn't true when they published it. Pretty hard to sue tabloids in the US.
6Wow, they have all of the control(the media/tabloids/paps), huh Jillness? I thought she loved ANY story about her in the tabloids. OHHHH welll, who knew?
7how long has she been in the entertainment industry..
8shouldnt she expect stuff like this now??
It's not hard to sue the tabloids in the U.S.; it's in the U.K. where it's hard. How on earth can anyone answer "yes" to this poll - don't you want ACCURACY in the media? You don't have to "take it" because it "comes the territory." If it's not true, it cannot be printed. That's why there are LIBEL LAWS in the U.S. Come on, people. ((**shaking my head at the insanity of it all**))
9i meant to quote that "it comes WITH the territory." see, at least *i* try to be accurate.
10Huge star
If she was a huge star she would be above this. She's a petty little attention ho. It must be embarrassing for her ex's. Realistically, she and Tony Romo probably will be broken up long before her issues with the tabloids are resolved.
11I think it shows how insecure she is. And also it shows that maybe there was something to the rumors. If they were really that secure, they could have just ignored the rumors. But instead she had to go on the attack. It ended up drawing more attention to the story than if they had just ignored it. There are plenty of Hollywood couples that get these stories all the time and they don't say boo about it, but she had to get all riled up and threaten to sue. Where there's smoke, there's fire. I have always said Romo would dump her soon and I stand by that.
12I'd be trying to protect my relationship, too.
13She isn't a huge star but I think of some of the stuff Brad and Angelina (mostly Angie) has to go through and yet even when I think they should, they never say anything, release statements, or sue tabloids. Jessica should quit trying to use her relationship for publicity and focus on her relationship with Romo. If its a relationship thats going strong you don't have to sue anyone.
14When you're willing to sell your personal life and life your eventually failing marriage out on TV...who are you to beg for privacy? Whatever amount of famous-ness she's achieved has been for being stupid. Chicken of the Sea anyone?
15I think she is over-reacting and I think this is probably because she and Tony are broken up. If not broken up, then at least on the rocks. Anyone who is such a media wh*re has no right to sue the tabloids.
Sorry, I meant to say 'LIVE your eventually failing marriage out on TV".
16You would think she would be use to it all by now. She has always had negative things said about her.
I never liked her anyway. I always found her annoying, unattractive, and dumb as nails.
17The tabloids here really walk the line. They'll say, " A source close to the singer said it appears as though the two are no longer together". It is all speculation. They don't present it as fact, to keep fom being sued.
18So, she's so mad that she's ready to sue for breakup rumors with Romo but she didn't do it anything about the rumors that she was sleeping with Johnny Knoxville? Why didn't she sue Bam Margera's ex, Jen Rivell, for calling into a Philly radio station and telling them that Jessica slept with Bam Margera?
19I picked other. Who could've actually quit laughing long enough to put option #1 out there...a huge star...that is the funniest thing I have heard in a long time. She is pathetic and I hope he does dump her.
20I chose the maybe option. Its a no win situation, really . Regardless if she gets her lawyers involved to settle these obsurd rumors, there will still be many more. You just have to pick and choose which rumors you want to address because you can't deal with them all.
21Tony Romo is just a third string QB who got lucky. So what if he breaks up with her. She deserves better... Especially if Romo's going to be taking relationship advice from the likes of teammate Terrell Owens
22She is acting within her rights.
23Everyone is potentially liable for their actions, if the magazine cannot substantiate their story, they are lying and she is entitled to a retraction, at the very least.
Personally, if I were a celebrity, I would be the most litigious one on record. Often what is published falsely goes beyond the benign and negatively affects the quality of life for these people. They deserve a way to respond to what amounts to character assassination.

25GD - I agree with the having to pick and choose part but the ones I pointed to were rumors and stories that involved things that supposedly happened while she was still married. I would think she or anyone would choose to fight the ones like those that are far more damaging to her character than just a break up rumor.
26maybe but what u expect..ur a freaking celebrity and hes a athlete..so um..yea
i guess thats
the price u pay when ur famous..sad but true.
27She should be above it. Tabloids are just that...tabloids. Does anyone take them seriously? It's not like CNN or anything.
Anyhoo, she's not a huge star anymore. She's a fading pop princess/ reality show star. She should be happy anyone cares enough to write even one sentence about her.
28I agree chaka_healer.
29"She should be happy anyone cares enough to write even one sentence about her."
Preach!
30She should just ignore things like that
31she has a right to do something. yes she's famous and tabloid gossip comes with the territory but I think even stars get to a point where they say "enough is enough". Tom Cruise and a number of other celebs have sued mags for false reporting..(not to say she's at the Tom Cruise level) but its certainly understandable why she would want to take some action. She's not the first celeb to do this and she certainly won't be the last.
32She's definitely overreacting. It's one thing if they said she gave him a disease or something, but to say they broke up sounds more like an error than a major problem.
33Um...a huge star she is not!
Anyway, I picked other because I can understand her frustration. The media has been dogging her since her split with Nick. That said, it seems over the top to sic her lawyers on the tabloids.
34OMG! This is by no means the most damaging thing that has been written about her! They have written that she cheated on Nick with numerous people, that she is a has been, that she's stupid... the list goes on! She can not keep a man, and if Romo dumps her, she knows how this will look in the media! I have no idea if the story is true or not, but that is ALL this is about. Period!
35In all likelihood, they are together...for now. But I doubt they will be for long.
As someone else wrote, she would be better served by dumping her FATHER, if she wants to win the public back over AND keep a man!
Where's the choice for she's a loser who will do anything for attention? She wants to sue because the tabloids are claiming that her meal ticket, that she's searched so hard to find, has dumped her??? Funny, don't remember her suing when the tabloids wrote constantly about her and her ex-husband.
36Is Romo a meal ticket?? Lol, very much the opposite is likely.
37Google it...
Tony Romo:10/29/2007: Signed a six-year, $67.4 million contract extension through 2013. The deal included an $11.5 million signing bonus and contains $30 million in total guarantees. His 2008 base salary is guaranteed and $6 million of his 2009 salary is guaranteed. 2007: $6 million, 2008: $6.5 million, 2009: $7 million, 2010: $8.5 million, 2011-2012: $9 million, 2013: $11.5 million, 2014: Free Agent
38Seriously Hotstuff- she wants him for the mooooola...
39If I had to guess, I would say that she and Papa Joe started this relationship in hopes that it would help produce Carrie Underwood type sales for her upcoming country album. They are upset because the tabloids are foiling their plan.
40I have no pity for Jessica Simpson.
41it's amazing how complete strangers can speak so confidently about the personality of someone they've NEVER MET.
42she's probably just fed up. really, in her life, what has she actually done? all the things people hate her for are mostly based on speculation and public opinion. people have a right to dislike her, for whatever reason. but it seems to me that all she's done is be herself and try. she's trying different things, and not meeting much success. we've all been there. but failing at something is not a character flaw. I admire her for getting up each day and keeping going when she has a 100% chance of facing some kind of mockery.
Hotstuff,
43Simpson's earning over her career are likely equivalent, and I am not just speaking domestically, but overseas appearances and endorsement deals as well. Further, that is gross. No mention of taxes, or the cut managers, attorneys, and agents get. Romo is hardly her meal ticket.
Er... huge star?
44Oh wait, I find this whole thing with her and that guy quite boring.
1) huge star...is stretching it. 2) of course she wants to protect her relationship with tony because its one huge publicity stunt and if the tabs believe they are not together she doesnt get any publicity for country western album that she is making.
45oh and simpson doesnt have an earning career all of her movies go straight to dvd, her last album tanked. romo's star shines brightly while simpsons fades away
46The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
47Since I live in Dallas and watch the local news daily...our local news (ABC,NBC,CBS,Fox) treat all gossip as fact in this relationship. The meaner the better.
It is truly ridiculous.
One moment they are covering a tragedy and the next breath they are talking about the "break-up". I would be p*ssed if I was Jessica too.
The local news media have been unmerciful on Romo for the past few months... as if it is anyone's business who he dates. I suspect her putting the lawyers on the tabloids has alot to do with all the nasty, mean mouth, media backlash that has been going on in Dallas for the last two months.
Sadly, if Jessica had any kind of sense... she would fire her father... get a real manager and top notch PR firm and get this sh*t stopped. As long as she keeps that creepy father of hers around... she will not get out from under this viscous backlash.
48yes she's definitely over reacting. she knew that there were going to be things said especially after romo sucked in the game she was at. GET OVER IT -you're in the public eye!
49lglooLover I appreciate your passion for this, as I think it's a bit absurd that we think anyone that succeeds as an entertainer should just deal with the harassment of their personal lives. Even if she's right, the biggest problem for her is she's not the most sympathetic plaintiff, given that she's invited a lot. But just because one part of a person is public doesn't mean ever part needs to be. And also, just because someone doesn't protest earlier doesn't mean they're giving up the right to protest later. But I think all that has to do more with a judgment on society and the law isn't always going to help. Here, as jilliness points out, they'd need to know the information was false, or have a reckless disregard for the truth. That's difficult to prove, particularly with the manner it was phrased.
