Avatar and The Hurt Locker Lead the 2010 Oscar Nominations!

Anne Hathaway joined Academy President Tom Sherak this morning in LA to announce the nominees for this year's Oscars. As expected, there was lots of love for Avatar — the film is up in a total of nine categories, as is The Hurt Locker, including Best Picture and Best Director nominations for both James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow. This is the first year with 10 films in the running for Best Picture, and The Blind Side scored a spot next to films like Up, Inglourious Basterds, and District 9.

The acting nods included many of the award season favorites so far with nominations for George Clooney and the ladies of Up in the Air, Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga. Both Gabourey Sibide and Mo'Nique were recognized for Precious, while Maggie Gyllenhaal scored a Best Supporting Actress nod for Crazy Heart and Matt Damon was honored for his role in Invictus with a Best Supporting Actor nomination.

I really wish Daniel Day Lewis was nominated for Nine. I personally was indifferent to the movie as a whole, but he was just superb and so charming.

I get such a kick out of seeing District 9 up there! I absolutely loved that movie and I'm glad to see it getting recognition. And I agree with all the above comments about Avatar... it was a beautiful, beautiful movie that definitely deserves all the box office success it's having. However, it's not Best Picture worthy. Go Kathryn Bigelow!

I definitely agree that Avatar doesn't deserve the best picture nomination. Sure, the graphics and visuals were amazing (and it should win an Oscar in those categories), but the plot? Completely unoriginal. And none of the actors received a nomination. The movie - and the director - is completely overrated.Sad to see The Hangover, (500) Days of Summer and Emily Blunt get overlooked. As for best picture, I'm definitely pulling for Up!

I saw "A serious man" over Christmas. Such an interesting film, it got you thinking. A lot! And it was so much better than many of the nominated. The same goes for "Bright Star" and "The Hurt Locker"!

emily was good in "the young victoria" but rupert friend was AH-MAZING as the young prince albert. i think he has a bright future ahead of him, being keira knightley's boyfriend notwithstanding. and i love meryl but c'mon. she shouldn't get nominated every time her movies do well. give it someone more deserving...

I'm sorry...Emily Blunt isn't nominated and Helen Mirren is? I LOVE Helen Mirren,it's impossible not to, but Emily's performance was much better than Helen's. Also, I'm disspointed that (500) Days of Summer didn't even score a nomination...especially when District 9 did.

grrrrr. no love for my friend anthony mackie. he was PHENOMENAL in "the hurt locker." should have been in damon's place. nice to see vera farmiga get a nod. we all know who is going to win the big categories. i do hope "the hurt locker" takes the best picture but they will probably give it to the crapfest known as "avatar." sorry academy, visuals aren't the only thing that make a movie. a romance novel crossed with the lion king is a story we've heard a million times over. and no love for "moon." grrrrrr...
