Pain & Gain: Brawn Is No Substitute For Brains

Director Michael Bay trades in the Transformers for body builders in his latest (and definitely not greatest), Pain & Gain.

Director Michael Bay trades in the Transformers for body builders in his latest (and definitely not greatest), Pain & Gain. The movie is based on the morbidly outlandish true story of the Sun Gym Gang, headed by Miami personal trainer Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg). Obsessed with the American Dream but sick of working hard while catering to the rich and famous, Daniel hatches a plan to capture and extort one of his wealthy clients (Tony Shalhoub). The extraordinary real details of the case (think explosions, barbecued body parts, and a stripper who believes she's been invited to join the CIA) are bizarre and fascinating. It's a shame the movie is so overloaded with silly, gratuitous slow-motion shots and over-the-top action sequences that the style overshadows the story.

The film takes place in the early '90s in Miami, and the vibrant colors reflect the era but not the dark story that Pain & Gain is telling. When manipulative Daniel convinces ex-addict Paul (Dwayne Johnson) and roided-out pal Adrian (Anthony Mackie) to help him with his plan, the ensuing disaster is gruesome, dark, and depressing. What nobody ever told Daniel is that to achieve success, you have to be smart as well as a hard worker. (Wahlberg does however, look amazing, even giving a tongue-in-cheek shout-out to his modeling days when he sports Calvin Klein briefs in one scene.) The movie could have ended several times before it does, but it just keeps going, as the details get progressively sloppier and the plot holes keep piling up. Get more of my thoughts on Pain & Gain after the jump.

Mark Wahlberg was joined by Rebel Wilson for the premiere of their film Pain & Gain at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood last night.

Mark Wahlberg was joined by Rebel Wilson for the premiere of their film Pain & Gain at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood last night. Mark and Rebel were accompanied by costars Anthony Mackie and Bar Paly and their director, Michael Bay, for the West Coast premiere, while Mark had his other leading lady, wife Rhea Durham, by his side as well. Although Mark's been busy promoting the movie ahead of its Friday release, he took a break yesterday to pick up flowers with his sons, Michael and Brendan, before hitting the red carpet.

Rebel, who sparkled in a red Theia dress at the event, shared a picture from last night's festivities and complimented her costar on her Twitter, writing, "Mark Wahlberg is such a boss. We missed you The Rock, and send you kisses and hugs." Rebel was referring to their costar Dwayne Johnson, who was absent from the LA premiere. Rebel's night out was just her latest in a busy schedule that included hosting the MTV Movie Awards earlier this month. It doesn't look like things will be slowing down for her any time soon, either, since just last week Universal announced that a sequel to Pitch Perfect will be released in 2015.

Missing from the cast's South Beach stop was their leading lady Rebel Wilson. She's busy prepping for her upcoming duties as host of the 2013 MTV Movie Awards this Sunday. This year's show has plenty of fun in store. Best of 2012

Which Guy Do You Want to See More of in 2013?

2012 was a breakout year for so many male stars.

2012 was a breakout year for so many male stars. There were plenty of men who made their mark on TV, including Emmy winners Damian Lewis and Idris Elba and Revenge star Josh Bowman. Several of the guys we already love have a major 2013 ahead as well, like Anthony Mackie, who will appear in Gangster Squad, The Avengers 2, and Runner, Runner. We can't forget some of our favorite Brits, either, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Sam Riley, and Sam Claflin.

We're two days into 2013 and optimistic about the twelve months ahead. With so many talented men on the scene, we want to know — which of these guys are you most excited to see more of in the year ahead?

Channing and Jenna Get Cute at a Busy Brunch For Their New 10 Years

Channing Tatum and his wife, Jenna Dewan, joined their 10 Years costars yesterday morning in NYC for a special brunch at the Hotel Chantelle. Along with Channing and Jenna, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Max Minghella, Kate Mara, Ari Graynor, and Rosario Dawson stepped out to mingle at the meal. Channing and Jenna aren't the only real-life couple who worked on the film — Kate and Max are also dating! 10 Years opened in limited release last Friday, and the star-studded cast continues to throw their weight behind the high-school-reunion-themed film.

We caught up with Channing and Jenna before they chowed down on their meal, and they told us about their own experiences as teenagers. Channing skipped his own high school reunion, but says he knows their movie is still true to life. Jenna described her high school years as typically Texan, but with the addition of dance class every night. The training served her well — it was on the set of the dance flick Step Up that she and Channing first got together.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Is Cool, But . . .

Four score and seven years ago (give or take a few decades), Abraham Lincoln wasn't just a champion of civil rights — he also slaughtered vampires.

Four score and seven years ago (give or take a few decades), Abraham Lincoln wasn't just a champion of civil rights — he also slaughtered vampires. That's the skewed re-imagining of our 16th president's life in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel. Benjamin Walker plays Abe, a young man bent on avenging the vampire murder of his mother. When the mysterious Henry (Dominic Cooper) comes to Abraham's aid during a botched attempt to kill his mother's attacker, Henry decides to train Abraham to be a vampire hunter. Wielding his trusty axe, Abe the vampire slayer slaughters the monsters all over 19th-century America by night and pursues his political career by day. Before you head to the theater, find out which elements make the bloody, action-packed thriller movie worth seeing — along with the concerns that may keep you away.

  • The fight scenes are exciting. The best parts of the movie are when Abe goes head to head with the vampires. He's a badass when he's got an axe in his hand, and the fighting is The Matrix-style, only with blood splatters.
  • But . . . The Matrix did it better 13 years ago.
  • Dominic Cooper and Anthony Mackie are fantastic. Cooper plays Henry, Abraham's vampire-killing guru, and he's smooth, charismatic, and the most interesting character in the movie. Mackie plays Abe's childhood best friend and eventual partner in vampire exterminating, and he's so watchable that I wished he'd had more scenes.
  • But . . . Cooper and Mackie aren't the stars of this movie; Benjamin Walker is. And while Walker is attractive and certainly looks the part, he's just a bit too bland. It's partially the way the character is written; when Abe's not axing the crap out of the undead, his personality is as wooden as the trees he chops down.
