Avril's New Video is Like Yeah, Whatever

The video for Avril Lavigne's new single, Girlfriend, is, well, exactly what you might think would come of the entire chain of Hot Topic stores exploding onto MTV. The pre-teen-y nature of the video seems a little, uh, insincere, coming from Avril who has recently talked openly about growing up and embracing glam more than punk. That being said...the song is already stuck in my head.

hm. her last CD was really good. her new one is too.. bubble-gum pop. and i hate it. sure the song is good the first time or two. but when youre on youre in the car for two hours and your friend doesnt want to listen to anything BUT this song.. you grow a deep despise for it really quick. (thats my case)

I have to admit, I was very disappointed as well with the song, and then that video came out and my disappointment sunk to a new low. That song is catchy, but soooooooooo mini pops! Britney wouldn't have even sung that on her first album and she is/was the pop princess! Also, since when does Avril dance and have backup dancers? That was the point of the video that I wanted to puke. I really hope this is the only song that sounds like this and they released it just to get all the tweens interested. Her last album was awesome, hopefully the rest of her new album will sound more mature.

Wow.... coming from some one who bad mouth little "poppy" type singers 24/7, you'd expect something better. This video really reminds me of something that fergie would do. Avril is preeeetttty lame.

Speaking as a Canadian girl - Avril is the embarassment of Canada. Who the hell is she trying to kid strumming that guitar? I'm so tired of her pretending to be all bad ass in the media (giving the finger and spitting on pap)and then her music comes out and its pure pop. She is so incoherent in her interviews it drives me nuts. If you're looking for some good Canadian music try Neil Young, Billy Talent or Finger 11 - not some stupid wannabe from Napanee!

She's aloud to sing about what she wants and aloud to dress how she wants. It seems like you all are her parents thiking that she should change for you. Stop acted like a babies for once. She can do what she wants. It's her decision. If she wants to change her music or style than let her be!

What an honorable way to get a paycheck, teaching ridiculously impressionable young girls that it's fun and hilarious to bully a chick and then make out with her asshole boyfriend. But I couldn't help but think the boyfriend and nasty goth chick deserve each other. -Bug

I definetly am dissapointed with the song and video...very 15 year old genre. For a 22 year old, married woman...not so much. But I love her blonde-pink hair. I wish I could pull something like that off! :p

Padraigin - would you agree that certain progressions of power cords played on the guitar are in the punk style? Strictly musically speaking? I'm just curious here since all of the guitar mags that we get at the house talk about punk in a strictly musical sense, not encompassing any of the social or emotional stuff that MisterPinkNoTip stated? Just wondering if it is possible to consider the punk movement and punk music seperately? People - don't scream at me here (I know no one has yet, but I also know that this post if taken in the wrong way could lead to screaming ;op), I'm seriously, genuinely asking this question.

Can you do music like her? No, as I said, I do alt-country folk stuff. Did some punk in college with my college band, but since I can't write punk, I don't play punk anymore. And I do have an indie record contract. You guys really sound like babies when ur like "I WANT THE OLD AVRIL BACK!" Boohhhwhooo!! WAHHHHHH. I would rather not hear any Avril at all, new stuff, old stuff, it's all sucky. U guys are really pathetic. Thank you. That means a lot coming from someone with limited grammar and social skills.

this is alright for a radio play pop song. kinda catchy. however, i really dislike how avril claims to be punk or glam or whatever. she is so far removed from either of those genres it makes me sick to hear her associate herself with either of those. first of all, any true punk music will NEVER be heard on mainstream radio. ever. period. and no, you cannot call someone 'punk' for painting their nails black and listening to this garbage. punk is more than a genre of music. it's a social movement. pretty much all punk has a political element to it. without that, punk would not exist. punk is about diy and music that leads to or calls for social change. (and no, i don't like the sex pistols either, but that's a completely different topic)... i really don't mean to be an ass (i kinda needed to rant though), but it really upsets me when people just throw that word around. i know it's going to happen. punk has become some sort of fashion just like hippie used to be (that idea comes from a crass song. real punk band. i completely agree with their stance on this matter). i know record companies and clothing manufactures are going to exploit anything so they can make money. that's how it is. it's the nature of their business. but sometimes it just aggravates me that anyone who listens to this and shops at 'punk' stores is associated with a political and social movement they don't know anything about. punk is not about what you wear! Well I have never been a fan of Avril (or not a fan really...) I must say this video/song is very dissapointing on many levels. One: It does show little growth from her music in the past this could have been on any of her other album(s?) Two: The song promotes acrimony among women, we need to reclaim our innate feminine power and stop cat fighting. This song does little to advance our cause. So Avril, you are a very talented and beautiful woman please reach down and be true to yourself and produce some art that you can be proud of. Something positive in nature.
