Boston Marathon Bombing Survivors Get Married in a Dream Wedding

Apr 4 2014 - 11:20am

Today's a happy day for Rebekah Gregory and Pete DiMartino, who said "I do" almost a year after tragedy struck their lives at the 2013 Boston Marathon. The couple, who was dating at the time of the race, both suffered injuries, but after working together on their recoveries, Pete proposed in October. Once TheKnot.com heard their story, the site decided to make them 2014's Dream Wedding winners, which meant readers helped orchestrate each stage of the wedding process, and the site provided expert planners and more. In fact, the event is being live streamed right now [1].

In a video produced by The Knot, which you can watch above, the couple shared their story. They were at the finish line cheering on Pete's mom. When the bomb exploded, Rebekah, 28, was thrown back and on top of her young son, luckily shielding him from most of the impact. Pete suffered a broken ankle and lost 90 percent of his right Achilles tendon. The bomb shattered every bone in Rebekah's foot, ankle, and part of her leg, and after undergoing more than 15 surgeries, she is still at risk for amputation. But they have faith that their future is bright. Rebekah told People [2], "We're just so humbled by the opportunity. And at the end of the day, the best part is that we're marrying each other. We just can't wait."
