Pitch Perfect: Lacks Harmony

Within the first five minutes of Pitch Perfect, the stranger sitting next to me uttered that it seemed like a "total made-for-TV movie."

Within the first five minutes of Pitch Perfect, the stranger sitting next to me uttered that it seemed like a "total made-for-TV movie." I was originally put off by his flippant dismissal of the new comedy, but after sitting through the entire trite film, I have to agree. Anna Kendrick is at the heart of Pitch Perfect playing Beca, a humorless college freshman who joins the Barden Bellas, a floundering female a capella group, at the insistence of her father. While she'd rather be spinning records for the campus radio station, Beca reluctantly embraces the opportunity to help the group free itself from the binds of its traditionally snore-worthy performances. Though peppered with some laughs and a couple fun musical numbers, the movie ultimately feels uninspired.

Borrowing aspects from the wealth of fish-out-of-water college comedies that have come before it, Pitch Perfect attempts to stand out from the rest by delving into the "cutthroat" world of a capella singers. Though many of the creative musical mash-ups like "Bright Lights Bigger City"/"Magic" are impressive, it's a gimmick that doesn't quite make up for the overall lack of originality. To find out what parts of Pitch Perfect I did enjoy, keep reading.

Whose Brick-Red Lipstick Do You Prefer?

Celebrities were hitting the brick this week in the most beautiful ways, stepping out with the hot-for-Fall hue on their lips.

Celebrities were hitting the brick this week in the most beautiful ways, stepping out with the hot-for-Fall hue on their lips. Gabrielle Union swiped on a satiny version of the shade, while Lea Michele hosted a party with a crimson smile. And Brittany Snow was the most daring of them all, opting for a deeper color that provided a stunning contrast to her blond hair. Red is always a classic, but this brick tone is a step above. So who wore it best?

Brittany Snow played with texture and color donning a white silk blouse and black splatter-print metallic trousers, both by LOFT, with satin Giuseppe Zanotti ankle-strap pumps at a party in LA. The actress glammed up her black-and-white look with a gleaming LOFT chain-link necklace, red python clutch, and crisp white nail polish. Take a cue from Brittany by styling printed ankle trousers with a sleek white blouse, colored ankle-strap pumps, and statement necklace for the office, then swap the trousers for this leather Sanctuary pencil skirt ($108) for cocktail hour with friends.

Pitch Perfect's Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow Talk Karaoke Favorites

The upcoming musical comedy Pitch Perfect boasts a funny trailer, writer Kay Cannon of 30 Rock, and Elizabeth Banks and her husband as producers.

The upcoming musical comedy Pitch Perfect boasts a funny trailer, writer Kay Cannon of 30 Rock, and Elizabeth Banks and her husband as producers. Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick stars as Beca Mitchell, a college freshman who reluctantly joins an all-girls competitive a cappella group. Brittany Snow, who showed off her musical abilities in Hairspray, also joins a cast that includes the hilarious Rebel Wilson of Bridesmaids and Adam DeVine of Workaholics.

I traveled to the Baton Rouge, LA, set of Pitch Perfect last November and caught up with Anna and Brittany between takes of a competition scene. I found myself dancing along while watching the women perform their a cappella mashup of "The Sign" by Ace of Base, "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles, and "Turn the Beat Around." Somehow, those songs worked together!

Just keep reading for my conversation with Anna and Brittany, who told me that songs by Coolio and Etta James are among their favorite to sing.

Mark, Mila, and Seth Team Up For Their Ted Premiere

The stars were out at Hollywood's Grauman's Chinese Theatre last night for the premiere of Ted. Mila Kunis, in a Christian Dior dress and Christian Louboutins, joined Mark Wahlberg and the film's writer-director, Seth MacFarlane, on the red carpet. Mark posed for a few photos solo, and was later joined by his wife, Rhea Durham. He told us initially he wasn't interested in starring in a film about a teddy bear that comes to life, but he came to see the potential in Seth's idea. Mark also said he's excited for the Entourage movie and may make a small cameo when it starts shooting next year.

Mila and Seth have worked together on Family Guy for over a decade, and when he asked her to read his Ted script over four years ago, she was happy to check it out. Right now, Mila's taking a break from Blood Ties to promote Seth's raunchy comedy. Later this year, she'll be on the big screen in Oz: The Great and Powerful. Seth told us he's excited for fans to see the film, and when we asked about a possible sequel, he said he'd love to do it. It was a special evening for some of the supporting cast members as well. Newlywed Giovanni Ribisi debuted his wedding ring and producer Scott Stuber, who welcomed a son with Molly Sims earlier this week, celebrated his good news with the cast and crew.
