Bruce Jenner Confirms His Transition: "Yes, I am a Woman"

Bruce Jenner confirmed during his two-hour interview with Diane Sawyer on Friday that he is transitioning into a woman. "I've been thinking about this day forever," he said while choking back tears, "and that day is today. Yes, I am a woman. I've always been very confused with my gender identity since I was this big [holding his hand knee-high]. I'm me, I'm a person. This is who I am."

Bruce said that when he explained the situation to his children, he told them that God gave him the "soul of a female" when he was created. "As of now, I have all the male parts, but my brain is much more female than it is male. That's very hard for Bruce Jenner to say, because I don't want to disappoint people. I've been honest with myself and with my family, and it's been tough. But I'm still here and that's the good news. I am going to do some good and we're going to change the world." He also responded to questions as to whether tonight's interview was some kind of publicity stunt in the following video.

Bruce's interview with Diane, which she revealed is the last time he will do an interview as Bruce, is the first time he has publicly addressed his journey after his changing appearance became a much buzzed-about subject in the media. He revealed that the slow process was a conscious decision because he refused to hurt his family. And despite remaining mostly quiet on the subject, the former Olympian's children have voiced nothing but support for their dad. Bruce's stepdaughter Kim Kardashian told E! News on Friday that she was planning on watching the special with Bruce; her mom, Kris Jenner; and all her siblings. "As a family we always support everyone," Kim said. "I'm excited for everyone to see the special tonight. Family first, no matter what." Bruce's daughter Kylie also posted a throwback photo of him on Instagram on Friday, with the caption, "daddy throwback. #Tonight #DianeSawyer #ABC #love."

The interview may also be just the beginning of Bruce revealing details about his new life. People reported in January that the father of six and stepfather of four has been filming his transition for a docuseries that will be aired on E! later this year. And now that Bruce has spoken out about his "emotional roller coaster," check out nine other things you may not have known about his incredible life.
