Bono was the guest editor for a very special July Issue of Vanity Fair and the topic at hand was Africa. Bono rallied his buddies, ranging from George Clooney to Jay-Z to President Bush to pose for twenty different covers which can be arranged in order to show them spreading the message by whispering in each other's ears. The idea for the issue came from Bono, who has been a huge philanthropist - specifically for Africa - for many years. He acted has a guest editor on the issue to help spread awareness and tell a story, saying, "It was my idea. I think if I wasn't a singer in a band, I probably would have been a journalist. I said I want to do an issue about Africa where the sense is Africa: an opportunity, Africa: an adventure," he said. "Not just a burden, which is the way people normally see it." These covers have definitely already caught our attention and we can only hope that the masses will follow suit to help spread Bono's important message around the world.

it's always nice to see celebs using their exposure for a good cause, whatever their reasons behind it
I like them. I like the Obama one.
very cool!
very cool concept!
I love the idea!
hmmmmm. love bono, but hmmmmmmmmmmm. maybe it's the two rum + cokes i had for lunch. can't get my brain to function.
where do you see obama??
Very clever idea. Great job.
i see djimon, jay-z, tutu . . . no obama.
I can't wait to get my issue in the mailbox! Wonder which cover I'll have?!
Djimon has grown on me
I think this is really great! Very original idea!
Very cool indeed.
wow that's really original idea with a powerful message! I hope this actually does some help in Africa...
Brad and Dijmon are hott
i have a soft spot for djimon. have since i saw him in amistad.
cool! i love it! =]
I like what Bono said about Africa not just being a burden but actually a beautiful continent.
I like the idea for the covers, but something about them looks too photoshopped and not real to me. I don't know why but it bothers me. I guess I wanted something a bit more natural looking and not so stagey.
Very cool. Queen Rania is gorgeous.
pinkflats: i second that. people are too used to seeing africa as the "dark continent". it's so beautiful, with beautiful people in it.
Bono is an awesome person
Ummmm I'm on the fence about this.
wow~ leave it to vanity fair & annie l. -- she's an EXCELLENT photog!
I like the one of Madonna and Maya Angelou!
nyara why are you on the fence about this one. And also I love the one with Queen Rania. Now that is a woman that needs to be celebrated for her beauty, intelligence and charity work.
Africa is beautiful and ugly, it's got the big 5 and nature and clean air but it's also got dictatrs, child soldiers, and war. It's got 53 countries each speaking it's own language with it's own people, tribes, dress and customs. I love being African bt it makes me so sad when i think of what goes on there. i would have like to see those Africans or people in Africa doing something on the cover as well.
Pink i think cos I look at it and all i see are people who go there for a few days, to check it out. i just don't see people who know a lot about Africa, i see people who know about Darfur and South Africa.
I live in South Africa and enjoy to see others spreading the support this amazing continent needs! Great idea Bono!
Desmond tutu is the oly I bow down for the man has go guts he spoke out during apartheid and continues to do so today. i have mad respect for him.
That group has a lot of power in their hands. I wish they would really do something about helping out. Pretty covers are not all
I really like the Maya Angelou and Madonna one. Maya just seems like a warm and lovely person. The Imaan ones are gorgeous, I think she's absolutely fabulous.
I see your point, and agree on needing to have photos of Africans doing something. Or how about the surgeons or pediatricians or nurses who are in Africa doing their share of hard work for a continent. Actually I admire these people's work more than what celebs do like Angie, Madonna, Oprah and Brad.

I think that these covers will sell more magazines that pictures of every day people on them. It's not necessarily FAIR, but is the American public and the celebrity-obsessed culture we live in.
I hope that the glossy celebrities on the outside get people to buy a magazine that has articles and interviews with those amazing surgeons, nurses, and volunteers (from all over the world) who are making a difference.
Totally agree pinkflats or the granparent taking care of of their grandchildren because their parents succumbed to AIDS. If we tested these people on their knowledge about Africa I'm sure they wouldn't do so well. I'm not knocking what they do but what do an irishman and some americans really know about Africa andthe complex issues surrounding it and it's problems. They are helping yes but I personally note the personally find it kind of patronising.
I also don't like that all of a sudden it is about Africa, as if the continent was formed just last year and celebs need to make their mark. Where was all these attention and want from many celebs to tell everyone that they're doing charity work for Africa ten years ago? Oh right, because this year the trend in Hollywood is all about Africa.
So in the tradition of "telephone" there's always a link in the chain that messes up the message...my vote is for GWB!!! He really could have used these two terms to really help the continent of Africa is someway...but clearly he got the wrong message...umm, Middle Eastern coutries are NOT Africa...that's Asia!!!
That's really cool. I love the one with George W.
Preach on Pink!!Amen to that!!! When people were starving in Niger where the heck were they. Really just rots me that they get kudos when thiscover is just getting them attention and not really africa.
It's like the wave...African AID was BIG in the late 80's...especially when Michael Jackson had the ability to move the country, but as with all things Hollywood, the "trend" comes to an end, and then comes back about 20 years later. I think it's wonderful that Hollywood and America in generally has finally started taking some interest in African affairs, but the corruption cannot be fixed in a day...it will take years, and money isn't always the answer...as people get jaded when they see money.
Thanks nyara. I think what Hollywood brings to Africa isn't attention but chaos and vanity.
interesting..i agree with nyara and pink..would have been nice to acknowledge the native people...those that really do make a difference and not those contributing the dollars..
The people who count ie the ameircan government don't give a flying crap!!!Celebrities can't do anything except donate money and write diaries in mags or newspapers. Until GWB and the people who can do something care we're gonna see more covers like this.
WHY DOES OPRAH GET TO BE ALL UP ON GEORGE LIKE THAT??????????????????????????????????? LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ilove2ski you are horny today lol!
hhhahahahahahahhaahahaahhaahahhaahhaahahhahahhahahhahahaahaahahahaha
No I am just really really excited because, it is my 21st birthday in 11 days!
Lol... The "native people"...
I do agree with u guys on gettin 'real' ppl (from Africa) with 'real' stories to tell on the cover...
GWB does not give a flying tomato..ugh loser hypocrite..i bet he cant even spell africa! ugh!
Girl I hope you have fun my 21st was the best birthday ever.
