First Look: Dirt's Second Season

Lucy Spiller is back and more ruthless than ever when Dirt returns March 2 for its second season.

Lucy Spiller is back and more ruthless than ever when Dirt returns March 2 for its second season. This time around, the show is pushing hard on the celebrity scandal angle, with each episode focusing on a story ripped directly from the tabloid headlines. (I'm pretty sure one of them's Britney Spears — just sayin'.)

I think it's interesting to see Dirt moving in that direction when there are so many ripped-from-the-headlines shows already, from the Access Hollywood-style news shows to True Hollywood Story to even Law & Order and CSI (remember L&O's take on Anna Nicole Smith?). Still, it seems like a good fit for the show — and a reason to get me to tune back in after I stopped watching partway through the first season. Another good reason: Farber Kauffman (Ryan Eggold), a new character who comes to Dirt straight out of journalism school and has a tough time adjusting to the celeb-gossip world — while also developing a romance with Willa. From the previews I've seen, I'm really going to like that guy.

Courteney & Coco's Lunch Break

Courteney Cox was back to work on the set of Dirt yesterday, but she managed to make time for the important things in life — food and family.

Courteney Cox was back to work on the set of Dirt yesterday, but she managed to make time for the important things in life — food and family. Coco stopped by for a little lunch wearing her cute girlie pink dress. We still can't believe how big she is getting! Looks like she was paying close attention and taking it all in. If we're lucky, maybe she'll make a cameo appearance this season.

On The Surface of Things: Where to Run

Cool Running, the web site that brought you the ever popular Couch to 5K running program, has rated running surfaces.

Cool Running, the web site that brought you the ever popular Couch to 5K running program, has rated running surfaces. Why? In an attempt to help keep runners free of injuries — that's why. Running on rock hard surfaces like concrete, like sidewalks, is hard on the body. To protect your joints you want to look for surfaces that have shock absorbing qualities for the majority of your runs. Also, you should try to be consistent with your surface choice, an abrupt switch can lead to injuries.

Here are the surfaces listed in order of best to worst. The number to the right indicates their "grade" with 10 being the best and 1 being just plain awful:

Grass 9.5
Wood chips 9
Dirt 8
Cinder track 7.5
Track 7
Treadmill 6.5
Asphalt 6
Sand 4
Snow 2.5
Concrete 1

If, after reading the list, you decide to move your runs to asphalt, aka the street - BE CAREFUL. Run defensively! Run towards on coming traffic so you can see what is coming at you. Don't listen to music (or at least keep the volume low enough that you can hear the environment around you). Wear bright colors too so you are easily seen.

Review: Dirt Texturizing Paste by Jonathan Product

The first thing you need to know about Dirt Texturizing Paste by Jonathan Product is that it doesn't make your hair look dirty — or even like it has product in it.

The first thing you need to know about Dirt Texturizing Paste by Jonathan Product is that it doesn't make your hair look dirty — or even like it has product in it. I say this because when I mentioned Dirt ($26) in a recent post, some readers were wary of what stylist Jonathan Antin says about the product: "There's something amazing about the way hair looks and behaves the day after — washing that is."

But do not be frightened: Dirt is, hands down, one of the most wonderful styling products I've ever had the pleasure of dipping my fingers into. I don't like having dirty hair, but the fact is that freshly washed, light and wispy hair just isn't very manageable. That's where Dirty comes in, so read more

Having a bad week at work? This should make you feel a bit more fortunate. (It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it.)

David & Courteney Really Really Like Il Sole

David and Courteney had a little date night at (where else?) Il Sole in LA last night.

David and Courteney had a little date night at (where else?) Il Sole in LA last night. It's good to see that David's hair is growing in quickly after that Ripper debacle! Rumors of unrest follow these two everywhere they go, so it's always nice to see them out for a little one-on-one time. Good news for Dirt (and Courteney) fans, as expected the show has been renewed for another season! Yay for dysfunctional tabloid drama! I, for one, am extremely relieved that we'll get to see the outcome of that intense Season One cliffhanger!

"Drive" Gets Parked, While FX Shows Get Good News

Well, the 37 of you who said "Drive" would be off the air within five episodes were right: Fox slammed the brakes on the show today, according to Variety.

Well, the 37 of you who said "Drive" would be off the air within five episodes were right: Fox slammed the brakes on the show today, according to Variety. None of the four episodes that aired got good ratings, but this week's situation was particularly dire: The show finished fourth in its time slot, with the fewest viewers yet.

I didn't think the first episode was that bad, but it also didn't compel me to watch again. I guess it's official that Tim Minear + Nathan Fillion + Fox = early death, as I'm sure "Firefly" fans can attest. Two more episodes of "Drive" were produced, and Fox hasn't announced whether they'll be shown on TV or only online. In the meantime, reruns of "House" will be filling "Drive"'s spot.

Fans of "Dirt" and "The Riches" got better news today, though: The FX president said he expects both shows to get second seasons. While I like "The Riches" more than I liked "Dirt," I'm glad to see FX continuing its tradition of supporting unusual, edgy shows.

Courteney Gets a Boost From Jen

Courteney was not thrilled to be caught out and about in LA this week.

Courteney was not thrilled to be caught out and about in LA this week. Looks like playing a tabloid editor hasn't changed her view of the paparazzi. The good news for CC is that Dirt scored high ratings when BFF Jen was on the season finale. The episode drew 2.4 million viewers, which is about 300,000 more than usual. The over-hyped kiss obviously did its job. Unfortunately, there's no word on whether that's enough to bring the show back for another season. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Courteney and Jennifer K-I-S-S-I-N-G

Last night was the highly anticipated, yet totally overrated, kiss between BFF and ex-Friends, Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox.

Last night was the highly anticipated, yet totally overrated, kiss between BFF and ex-Friends, Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox. We know the kiss was for hype and in fact Cox even downplayed it to prepare us for the anticlimactic event. That said, we have been a fan of this show since the beginning and we hope it returns to see how things really end. It took a few episodes for us to warm up to this show but it's interesting and definitely makes you think about the juicy dirt we read each week in our favorite magazines. Anyway, in case you missed it, enjoy the lip lock between two great looking friends.
