Kerry Washington Lands Her First Major Magazine Cover

Kerry Washington graces the cover of Elle's June issue, which will be available on newsstands May 21.

Kerry Washington graces the cover of Elle's June issue, which will be available on newsstands May 21. In her first major fashion magazine spread, the actress dons Marc Jacobs and opens up about her path to success, red carpet preparations, and why she is humbled by her career choice — although it was not her first pick. While Kerry had a moment to shine in the spotlight at last night's Met Gala, where she wore a floral Vera Wang gown, she has been busy promoting her upcoming comedy Peeples and hit show Scandal. Here's more from Kerry in Elle:

  • On the career she thought she'd pursue: "I imagined I'd be a clinical psychologist, with a focus on how performance shapes identity. I'd figure out ways to use role-playing in the healing of people."
  • On the thought of becoming a model or film actress: "I was not that girl. I was a kooky theater kid, silly and goofy and academic."
  • On getting red-carpet-ready: "I found out I enjoy the process. All these people show up at my house, they all have kits, someone has dresses. And it's like, Let's have fun. It's not all about me. We're able to create stories on the red carpet."
  • On her current success: "I'm the luckiest broad in Hollywood now. To be the lead actor on Scandal and to be in the highest-earning Tarantino movie — I don't get to ask for more."

Taylor Swift Talks Chasing Boys and Yelling at Exes in Elle

Taylor Swift posed in a printed Louis Vuitton dress to cover the upcoming issue of Elle magazine, which is available on newsstands Feb.

Taylor Swift posed in a printed Louis Vuitton dress to cover the upcoming issue of Elle magazine, which is available on newsstands Feb. 19. She's been busy prepping for her upcoming tour and most recently made headlines for slamming ex Harry Styles during her Grammy performance last night. Inside the issue, Taylor addressed her insecurities, ex-boyfriends, and the speculation surrounding her songwriting. She also got candid about how she handles being the center of a constant swirl of rumors. Here are highlights from Taylor Swift in Elle:

  • On her insecurity: "Middle school was what programmed me to be semi-insecure, like, all of the time. I didn't fit in. . . . I'd stand on the outside of the circle but I was never really in. That's when I started to realize there's this thing called rejection."
  • On ex-boyfriends: "I don't think I've ever yelled at an ex-boyfriend. Ever. I'm not a yeller. I'm not a fit thrower. If something is done, it's done."
  • On speculation surrounding her songs and famous exes: "To me it's just writing songs the way I always have. It's me sitting on my bed feeling pain I didn't understand, writing a song, and understanding it better. If people want to dissect the lyrics, that's their right, but it's all coming from the exact same place as where I started. It's just something I do to feel better."

Naomi Campbell: I'm "Never Gonna Get Away" From That Phone-Throwing Incident

Despite championing charities the world over, Naomi Campbell says she'll never quite escape her checkered past.
Naomi Campbell in Elle Magazine February 2013

Despite championing charities the world over, Naomi Campbell says she'll never quite escape her checkered past.

In an interview featured in the February issue of Elle, Campbell — referring specifically to the 2007 case in which she pleaded guilty to throwing a phone at her personal assistant — said, "I'm never gonna get away from it. It's part of my history. I was remorseful and regretful. I've served. I did that time. And I never want to be in that position again."

But starring in Oxygen's new reality series The Face, which debuts next month, may help change how she's viewed.

"The first time I saw her cry in an elimination I thought, 'She's in this,'" said Oxygen executive Rod Aissa. "The public will see the Naomi that her friends know. That doesn't come across in a picture, but it does come across on television."

Still, the pictures of Campbell in Elle are worth a look. A selection of them here in the gallery.

Joanna Coles Has Fired Nine Cosmo Staffers; Kate Lanphear Is Definitely Leaving Elle

Joanna Coles told us she was "not going to muddle" with Cosmopolitan when she took over as editor in chief in September, but she clearly wasn't referring to staff changes.

Joanna Coles told us she was "not going to muddle" with Cosmopolitan when she took over as editor in chief in September, but she clearly wasn't referring to staff changes.

Coles has reportedly sacked nine members of the magazine's team, including seven on the editorial side and two from the photo department. And while she's hired British GQ's Paul Solomons as creative director and Marie Claire's Joyce Chang as executive editor, a litany of other positions have yet to be filled.

The departures leave Jessica Knoll as the magazine's only current senior editor. When the two first met at a staff meeting in September, Coles joked, "Kate [White] told me you're a rock star. But Kate's gone, so it doesn't matter now."

Over the last several months, the desks at New York's glossy fashion titles have operated more like a game of musical chairs than anything else. The latest departure in a round of shuffling that started in August sees Elle's style director Kate Lanphear leaving her position. It's unclear where she's headed next.

The revolving doors started spinning when Sally Singer was ousted as editor in chief of T Magazine at the end of August. She's now back at Vogue as the digital creative director and was replaced by former WSJ. Magazine editor Deborah Needleman in late September. Needleman took WSJ.'s creative director Patrick Li and fashion features director Whitney Vargas with her when she made the jump.

This week it was announced that stylist Joe McKenna would join T Magazine as fashion director at large. W's Maura Egan has joined T as features editor. Meanwhile, Alix Browne, T's deputy design editor, will head to W Magazine as features director.

Back at The Wall Street Journal, Needleman's deputy editor Ruth Altchek was named editorial director of the paper's weekend Off Duty section and WSJ. in mid-October. Harper's Bazaar executive editor Kristina O'Neill was brought in as editor of the magazine. Two senior members of Bazaar's accessories team, Kate Davidson Hudson and Stefania Allen, left shortly after O'Neill, but not to join her at WSJ. Bazaar's features director Anamaria Wilson also left in October for a position as vice president of global corporate communications at Michael Kors.

Bazaar held onto and promoted three key staffers: longtime senior fashion market editor Joanna Hillman was promoted to style director, Nicole Fritton was named fashion market and accessories director, and Elisa Lipsky-Karasz became the magazine's features editor.

Brides executive editor Anne Fulenwider replaced Coles as editor in chief of Marie Claire. Her first big staff changes have been to promote Nina Garcia from fashion director to creative director and to hire Alex Gonzalez as artistic director. Fulenwider was herself replaced by Keija Minor, becoming the first black editor in chief of a Condé Nast title.

Speaking of Condé Nast employees, Eva Chen left her position as beauty and health director at Teen Vogue and was replaced by Glamour's senior beauty editor Elaine Welteroth.

This month's selection of images runs the gamut from colorful and sparkly, like Taylor Swift on the cover of Glamour, to clean, spare, and high-end — Aymeline Valade's cover of Vogue Japan, on which she wears a piece from Raf Simons's debut couture collection for Christian Dior, is a perfect example.

A look at all the covers revealed thus far here, in the gallery.

September Record-Breakers: Vogue and Elle Promise Heftiest Issues Ever

After reporting the number of advertising pages that will be included in their September issues, both Vogue and Elle are touting their biggest books ever.

After reporting the number of advertising pages that will be included in their September issues, both Vogue and Elle are touting their biggest books ever.

Vogue will have a total of 658 ad pages in this year's Lady Gaga-covered September issue, a 13 percent increase over last year's 584 pages, and its best performance since 2008. Vogue's September 2007 issue boasted 727 pages of ads, but this year's editorial content will push its pages into record-breaking territory. (On Friday, Vogue will start a contest on its Facebook page asking readers and fans to guess how many pages the issue will hold. The prize is a copy of the upcoming book Vogue: The Editor's Eye.)

Elle, which is expected to have Katy Perry on its cover, will also print the biggest issue in its history. Elle has announced 400 pages of ads — a 12 percent increase — in its September issue. Elsewhere at Hearst, Harper's Bazaar, covered by Gwen Stefani, is up 17 percent to 360 pages. Marie Claire has broken its record for ad pages with a 23 percent increase to 237 pages, and Miley Cyrus will star on its cover.

Other magazines on the rise include InStyle, which jumped 2 percent to 440 pages, and People StyleWatch, up 10 percent to 185 pages. T, The New York Times Style Magazine had a small increase to 133 ad pages. T's chief rival, WSJ. magazine, is up slightly, too, to 63 ad pages — and Daphne Groeneveld's cover for that issue is seen above.

Among the magazines that saw declines were Vanity Fair, which lost 2.5 percent, going down to 222 ad pages. Glamour's Victoria Beckham issue slid 16 percent to 205 ad pages, W lost 4 percent and went to 246 pages, and Lucky, with 136 ad pages, sank 26 percent.
