Greta Gerwig stars in today's Damsels in Distress from director Whit Stillman. Adam Brody and Analeigh Tipton are among her cast mates in the comedy, which is based on a group of college girls who set out to improve the lives of their classmates through unconventional, and somewhat crazy, means. Greta and Whit told us about their own university days at a recent NYC press day. Leading ladies Carrie MacLemore and Megalyn Echikunwoke also weighed in on the topic, and shared a fun story about a particularly rowdy off-set party that bonded the largely female cast together.View Transcript »
I had this wonderful Halloween party. It was, like, everyone got really inappropriate. It's a big cast but it's mostly women, which is, I think really exciting. It's sort of about a fascinating character at a college. It's not a very good college, called Seven Oaks University. Her name is Violet Wister, we think and she is the queen bee of the group of girls who want to save the soul and the lives of their fellow students, and also make it a more fragrant beautiful place. It 's a big cast but it's mostly women, which I think really exciting, and kind of unprecedented for this kind of movie and just in Hollywood in general. So, it was really great to be working with really interesting women, we're all so different. My campus life is very different because I think when you go to school in New York it's kind of like The Hoosier campus didn't have that bubble feel, but I do wish that I'd met these girls. I was acting. I was acting all through high school and then I just kept on going through to now. Luckily enough I get to do what I love. I heated it and Greta loved it, so we had different kind of attitudes toward it I'd say. Yeah. My college experience was It was an idealized experience, but it was ideal while I was there, and Whit had to create a fictional world where it was my idea idealized it before, and now after, but I didn't like it during. I was always the sidekick in my life. my own life. That's my own sidekick. That's an amazing woman, the woman you're the sidekick to. What's she doing now? She's pretty amazing. She's not speaking to me right now. but she's in... No, I feel like I was always the behind the scenes person a little bit. but it really, in college, when I got cast in plays, I really would get cast in like, the side-kick role. Like if it was a musical, I would be the friend who got the funny number. That was my no strings attached. We did a country western night; that was a lot of fun. With country line dancing. I had this wonderful Halloween party that was like, everyone got really inappropriate. We had a great Halloween party. Greta had a smashing Halloween party. Sounds like you guys on the phone. Yeah. They were in character all the time. Yeah. She dressed up as Joan Didien. What were you? She carried around a buck and she was like, this is who I am. went with the laziest costume. I had the ambition of going as Dr. Watson, and then I pulled out a white shirt, and some tube socks, and glasses, and then I was just Tom Cruise from Risky Business. Part of our apartment was destroyed. teetotalers.
