Guinness World Record For Most Holiday Lights 2013

Real-Life Griswolds Win the Record For Most Holiday Lights

Australian lawyer David Richards channeled his inner Clark Griswold (à la Christmas Vacation) by installing 502,165 Christmas lights on his suburban home, making him the coolest dad on the block. This marked the second time Richards has claimed the Guinness World Record for most lights on a residential property. The father of three first took the record back in 2011 with 331,038 bulbs, but last year, a New York family beat him by installing 346,283 lights. Along with putting up 31 miles of lighting wire this year, Richards also added glowing reindeer and Christmas music to get in the holiday spirit — some next-level stuff!

Installation took around a month to complete, and the cost to keep those lights glowing is more than $2,000 a month. Luckily for Richards, though, he doesn't have to worry about the payment, since it's been donated by a local power company. The family also welcomes donations for the holiday installation, with all funds going toward children's charities, and Richards hopes to raise more than $100,000. Referring to his massive lighting display, Richards told the Canberra Times, "It's like a party in your driveway every night." There was an actual party at his home too, when he and his wife, Janean, hosted a cousin's wedding, turning on just the white lights for a one-of-a-kind venue.
