Ensemble Romantic Comedies — Love 'Em or Leave 'Em?

I couldn't help but let out a groan yesterday when I heard the news that Lionsgate is in the process of adapting pregnancy guide What to Expect When You're Expecting into a romantic comedy.

I couldn't help but let out a groan yesterday when I heard the news that Lionsgate is in the process of adapting pregnancy guide What to Expect When You're Expecting into a romantic comedy. The film will follow seven couples as they prep for parenthood, and I'm willing to bet the the majority of those onscreen parents-to-be will be big budget actors.

It's no secret that the ensemble romantic comedy is getting more popular every year — we had He's Just Not That Into You, and Valentine's Day will hit theaters in a few weeks. I'm kind of divided on the whole genre, though I'll always have a soft spot for Love Actually. Where do you stand — love 'em or leave 'em?

The New York Times recently "went shopping" with former Sex and the City executive story editor and co-author of He's Just Not That Into You Liz Tuccillo, asking her to share her cocooning essentials for her annual New Year's Eve dinner party. As it turns out, the lady knows a thing or two about design, as well as dudes. So I thought I'd share some of her picks for creating cozy party on the eve of the new decade, as well as some of my own.

Who Are the Best Movie Girlfriends of 2009?

We've already talked about the best dude buddies of '09, but this year gave us several true-blue girlfriends, too (plus a BFF mother-daughter pair).

We've already talked about the best dude buddies of '09, but this year gave us several true-blue girlfriends, too (plus a BFF mother-daughter pair). While many have seen their share of drama (Jennifer’s Body, for instance?), we still had fun watching all of their relationships. So tell me, which of these ladies are your favorites?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays.

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my selections below you can also add Defiance, Army Wives: Season Two, Reaper: Season Two, and Prison Break: Season Four to your queue.

Revolutionary Road
When I first read Richard Yates's 1961 novel, Revolutionary Road, I wasn't positive it would make a good movie. However, Sam Mendes does an artful job directing his wife, Kate Winslet, and her Titanic costar Leonardo DiCaprio in this story of domestic discontent set in the '50s. I also love the costuming in this movie, inspired by the era's amazing fashions.

If you didn't catch this one in theaters, it's well worth your time at home — just be prepared feel a little sad about life afterward. It's not exactly uplifting.

Special features include commentary with director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Justin Haythe, deleted scenes with commentary, and a featurette titled, "Lives of Quiet Desperation: The Making of Revolutionary Road."

Greg Behrendt Reveals: She Was Just Not That Into Me

He's Just Not That Into You became a bible of sorts for the single woman who didn't want to get blindsided by one more man who didn't call her back.

He's Just Not That Into You became a bible of sorts for the single woman who didn't want to get blindsided by one more man who didn't call her back. Co-authored by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, it outlined the many things women tell themselves about dates that go nowhere, when really the answer may be. . .yeah, I won't repeat it.

The book that claimed it provided the "no-excuses truth to understanding guys" took some hits from critics who said that its premise — that women should just stifle their desires (to call first, to ask those men what's wrong, to express what they want) — adhered to an old-fashioned vision of womanhood. "Disguised as 'liberation,' " wrote one critic, in a typical slam, "the book espouses an astoundingly passive role for women in relationships: always the pursued, never the pursuer."

But in a standup routine Behrendt did in 2006, he revealed something interesting. Part of the reason he knew so much about men's excuses wasn't just because he was a man. "What I don't tell them," he says tantalizingly, about why he was the guy to write the book was that: "I'm also almost every girl in the book." Box Office: Madea Makes Money

It's no surprise that when Tyler Perry has a movie out, it's going to do well at the box office — but $41 million well?

It's no surprise that when Tyler Perry has a movie out, it's going to do well at the box office — but $41 million well? Dang! Madea Goes to Jail took the top spot over the weekend and is Perry's best debut to date.

Taken, Coraline, and He's Just Not That Into You continued to do good business, coming in second, third, and fourth respectively. Meanwhile, the fifth spot went to this year's "little film that could" and newly crowned Oscar-winning Best Picture. Variety reports:

Fox Searchlight reached Oscar Sunday with Slumdog Millionaire enjoying a ninth straight week in the top 10.

The weekend's other wide release debut, Fired Up, opened at No. 9.
