Natalie, Reese, Sandra, and More Oscars Ladies Are Red-Hot and Sparkly on the Carpet

There was a great deal of glamour on display at this evening's Oscars.

There was a great deal of glamour on display at this evening's Oscars. Academy Awards newcomer Hailee Steinfeld led the subtle sparkling trend in a tea length Marchesa, while Cate Blanchett picked lavender Givenchy and Black Swan's Mila Kunis wore a darker purple Elie Saab. Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman stuck with the color theme, wearing Dolce and Gabbana and Rodarte respectively. Amy Adams, meanwhile, went bold in blue with her sequined L'Wren Scott.

Blue Valentine star Michelle Williams, who brought her pal Busy Philipps as her date, dazzled in Chanel, while Nicole Kidman picked a similar hue from Christian Dior. Celine Dion chose a simple and chic white Armani Prive, and Halle Berry stepped out in an ethereal design by Marchesa. Mandy Moore arrived solo in a romantic Monique Lhuillier, and Gwyneth Paltrow's first look of two was a metallic Calvin Klein.

Red was perhaps the night's most popular color, with Jennifer Hudson choosing a bright Versace and Jennifer Lawrence being a knockout in Calvin Klein. Last year's best actress winner, Sandra Bullock, returned in red Vera Wang and the show's host, Anne Hathaway, was decked out in a similar look from Valentino for her first gown. Reese Witherspoon changed things up in black and white Giorgio Armani, and Camila Alves perfectly complemented her partner, Matthew McConaughey, in a black gown. Natalie, Colin, Christian, and Melissa Win Big at the Star-Studded Oscars!

James Franco and Anne Hathaway kicked off the Oscars with a pre-recorded tour through the year's best film nominees, then they took the stage for a few live jokes.

James Franco and Anne Hathaway kicked off the Oscars with a pre-recorded tour through the year's best film nominees, then they took the stage for a few live jokes. Their families even got in the act, with Anne's mother standing up in the crowd to tell her to stand up straight, and James's occasionally foul-mouthed grandmother expressing her excitement at "seeing Marky Mark!" Tom Hanks was on hand to announce a few early winners, then Kirk Douglas presented the best actress in a supporting role honor to a truly surprised Melissa Leo. Her speech was heartfelt after a grueling award season, though she caused the censors some alarm by uttering the F-word. She later, though, apologized profusely for the slipup. Don't miss all our press room updates including Natalie Portman talking about her baby!

Justin Timberlake and best-dressed Mila Kunis announced the animated awards before Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin stepped out in matching white jackets to present Aaron Sorkin with best adapted screenplay for The Social Network and further writing honors to the man behind The King's Speech. Anne Hathaway ditched her dress for a pantsuit to joke with Hugh Jackman during a musical number, and James Franco dressed as Marilyn Monroe, pink gown, blond hair and all, to introduce Helen Mirren and Russell Brand. A stunning Giorgio Armani clad Reese Witherspoon stepped out to open the envelope containing the name of the best actor in a supporting role winner — Christian Bale won for his role in The Fighter, and after giving a shout-out to the real-life Dicky Ecklund, he teared up when telling his wife she's his mast in the storm of his life. Fellow Australians Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman were up next as presenters, followed by Scarlett Johansson and Matthew McConaughey handing out the best sound mixing honors. Anne enjoyed many costume changes and wore seven glamorous gowns, everything from Valentino to Lanvin, and weigh in on which was her best!

Mandy Moore was soon on stage, having changed from her gold Monique Lhuillier into a strapless blue number, to perform a track from Tangled nominated for best original song with her costar Zachary Levi — Gwyneth Paltrow later sang a number from Country Strong, but Randy Newman ended up taking honors for his music in Toy Story 3. Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal teamed up to present the best short honors before the much-anticipated Twilight moment, which was an auto-tuning the movies and our favorite Twilight stars. Sherlock Holmes buddies Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. joked about RDJ's checkered past together on stage, then Celine Dion took the stage to sing during the "In Memoriam" montage.

Subtle sparkling Halle Berry had the microphone afterward to say a special tribute to legendary actress Lena Horne. The big awards came quickly next, with Tom Hooper clinching directing honors for The King's Speech and mentioning that he shares "a triangle of man love" with his stars Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. Jeff Bridges presented Natalie Portman with her best actress statue, and the Black Swan star tearfully thanked her "love" Benjamin Millepied for giving her the best role yet — becoming a mother. Sandra Bullock handed off the best actor gold man to Colin Firth, who managed to repress his urge to dance long enough to get out his words of thanks. Love for his movie kept coming, as it even picked up the best picture! This was another great night for Hollywood and a year of film — make sure to catch up on all our coverage from the press room, fashion and beauty news, and stay tuned for all the action from the afterparties!

We've seen Helena Bonham Carter in some pretty colorful gowns this award season, and for the 2011 Oscars she's gone relatively tame. She wears a black corseted Colleen Atwood gown with cutout accents at the sleeves to keep things interesting. A wildly wavy updo gives it that special Helena flair. Last night's BAFTA Awards in London brought out many award season regulars, with Amy Adams and Emma Stone leading the way for the ladies in their bright gowns. Emma Watson, meanwhile, picked a nude Valentino to support her Harry Potter films. Jessica Alba, with red lips and braided hair, picked the popular color of blue in Versace, along with a Tom Ford-clad Julianne Moore and Jennifer Lawrence in Stella McCartney. One star missing from the red carpet was Natalie Portman, whose Black Swan director, Darren Aronofsky, ended up taking home her best actress honor. Emma is so far winning as the evening's best dressed, but who's your pick?

The King's Speech took home best film, with stars Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush each also collecting wins for best actor, supporting actress, and supporting actor. Colin and more represented the sexy guys at the show, with Spider-Man himself, Andrew Garfield, on hand alongside his Social Network costar Jesse Eisenberg. This year's best actress Oscar nominees stepped out today at the Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon in Beverly Hills. Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Hailee Steinfeld, Helena Bonham Carter, and Melissa Leo all stopped by the interview room to talk about their Oscar-nominated performances, awards-season style, and why their roles spoke to them. Amy said she had great respect for costar Christian Bale's method approach to acting, and Natalie said being "drawn to the world of dance" attracted her to Black Swan. Meanwhile, a Chanel-clad Michelle said she missed her Blue Valentine costar Ryan Gosling, who wasn't at the luncheon. Surprisingly, he didn't score a nod for his work in the movie.

Talk also turned to awards-season style, and Nicole said her daughter, Sunday Rose, is a fan of "pretty dresses" and will likely have a big say in her Oscar night look. She said, "Fingers crossed. I might be wearing a tutu!" Helena also made light of her own fashion plans, saying that while she promises not to wear mismatched shoes to the ceremony, her outfit will still "probably be a catastrophe." While she and most of the other female nominees are by no means newcomers to the Hollywood scene, True Grit's Hailee and Winter's Bone star Jennifer are both enjoying newfound fame as actors. In fact, Jennifer said this will be the first time she misses her tradition of watching the show over linguine with her best friend!

The big winners from last night's SAG Awards reconvened in the press room after accepting their statues during the star-studded show. Colin Firth celebrated his best actor nod alongside his The King's Speech costars, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush. They also picked up the outstanding cast in a motion picture accolade, and Colin spoke about how fans have connected to the movie. The Fighter's Christian Bale, meanwhile, spoke about how his victory felt pretty "freaking good," and Temple Grandin's Claire Danes commented that her third award season win almost felt excessive. The Modern Family gang was particularly jubilant when they spoke to the assembled reporters, with Eric Stonestreet breaking from the celebrations to once again compliment Sofia Vergara's assets. The King's Speech Cast Celebrates Their SAG Wins and Says It's "the Perfect Award"

The King's Speech won big at the SAG awards tonight! First, Colin Firth won the honor for outstanding male actor, then the film scored the award for outstanding cast in a motion picture. Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham Carter stopped by the press room with their statues to talk about how the film has moved people, and why winning this particular award feels perfect for them.

  • Firth, on why people have an emotional response to the film: "I've been hearing quite profound responses. They're very hard to anatomize and deconstruct and explain. One thing that pops in to my mind is that throughout the film, you are responding to interactions between people."
  • Firth, on describing a particularly moving scene with Bonham Carter: "She just has to sit and watch and suffer as much as he suffers. It's Helena's face looking at my face. What moves people isn't so much my face but her face looking at my face. That's what I respond to when I watch it. It's watching other people respond to other people. No one's in a bubble in this film. It's a wonderful matrix of responses."
  • Rush, explaining why he thinks people connect with the story: "I get texts from people from all over the English-speaking world and they all have quite, quite different responses. The storytelling doesn't seem to prescribe a fundamental response. People are allowed to connect with different things; the friendship; the failure one might have with communicating with other people. People have said [they've] loved it for its power of oratory . . . It's so great to hear a speech that galvanizes a country."
  • Bonham Carter, on why the ensemble award feels special: "The great thing about being an ensemble is [that] we're all dependent on each other's talent. The most important thing about acting is listening. But that's what an ensemble is, is properly listening. For me it's the perfect award for us to receive."
