Kanye Goes Hollywood Before Proposing to Kim

The Hollywood Film Awards have become widely considered the unofficial start of award season, and with good reason. The annual ceremony, held in Beverly Hills, has a knack for shining an early spotlight on the movies and talents that tend to become top contenders for Golden Globes and Oscars. This year, Gravity's Sandra Bullock, Dallas Buyers Club star Matthew McConaughey, and 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen were just a few of the notable honorees.

Kanye West opened the show to present McQueen with his honor and apparently made a quick exit after he spoke; just after his appearance at the ceremony, he flew to San Francisco, where he proposed to Kim Kardashian in front of their friends and family on her 33rd birthday! Kanye wasn't the only surprise presenter of the evening. Robert Downey Jr. handed Jared Leto his breakthrough performance award for his role as the transgendered Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club, introducing Jared as "one of the most beautiful actresses of his generation."

Overall, the night was a lighthearted celebration; presenters and honorees took advantage of the untelevised ceremony to pepper their speeches with profanity and raunchy jokes. Matthew thanked his wife, Camila Alves, for telling him to "grab his sack and do it" when he was waffling on taking on a fourth film role in a year, while Sandra took the opportunity to harangue Harvey Weinstein for failing to hire her yet. "I wore your wife's dress," she said, referencing the Marchesa gown — designed by Harvey's wife, Georgina Chapman — she was in when she snagged her Oscar for The Blind Side. The audience was also treated to a solo performance by Coldplay's Chris Martin. He played the band's track "Atlas" from the upcoming Catching Fire soundtrack and had no shortage of Hunger Games-related jokes, insisting the movies are based on a true story and claiming he just tried to tap into "what those people went through" when he penned the ballad. Stay tuned for tomorrow's POPSUGAR Live! to catch our interviews with Sandra, Matthew, Harrison Ford, and more of the stars from this year's Hollywood Film Awards.
