Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward star as a young couple in love in the quirky Wes Anderson comedy Moonrise Kingdom. The two newcomers may be hitting the big screen for the first time, but they managed to hold their own alongside an all-star cast. We sat down with the young actors at their Cannes Film Festival pressday, and they weighed in on working with some of the biggest names in Hollywood like Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, and Bill Murray. Kara and Jared also told us about their favorite scenes to film, why they weren't intimidated on set, and what their parents thought about some of their more risque scenes. Moonrise Kingdom is in select theaters now and will be opening across the country this month.View Transcript »
It was amazing Yeah. They were all great. To be with them, they were the kindest people. I feel like I would ruin it if I do something from it 'cause everything was just so perfectly placed. There were so many beautiful, beautiful scenes there but I think one that I really loved acting was one between myself and Fran McDormand when it's just this sweet, sad mother-daughter scene where it's the two characters at their most vulnerable points. For me there's so many scenes I just love in this movie, If I had to pick, I would say a lot of the storm stuff, like the awesome things from getting transferred to Kathy Scouts and also when our characters first meet that I just kind of really like that scene. I honestly, I didn't want to take anything from the sets, because I just, I wanted to leave and feel like I just left the house or the living room or whatever I left. I didn't want to, if felt like I would ruin it if I took something from it because everything was so perfectly placed. Yeah. I watched the Darjeeling Limited, World Tenbons and Fantastic Mr. Fox and to be honest with you, I couldn't pick a favorite. They are wow, extraordinary. I had seen Fantastic Mr. Fox. When it was in theaters before. I had heard of his other movies and I wanted to see them but never have the time. Eventually, I did. They're all really good. My parents were fine, they said, if this is what you want to do, go ahead. My mom is all right. She didn't realize that these are the characters and that's not us. Yeah. Everyone who I worked with I missed so muchthey were not intimidating people. They are just so kind and sweet and down to earth it was just amazing to be with them. Their kindest people. It's been amazing to be here with all these talented artists. it's such an honor and a blessing to see the movie get the recognition it deserves for being such a beautiful story. It's really too great for words. Like I can say something. I can say "Oh it's surreal," but "surreal" really does not describe this. It's "wow." Yeah. And I also met Alec Baldwin at dinner party freak.
