One Day: Likable Leads in a Lukewarm Love Story

One Day tries to deviate from the typical whirlwind romance movie by bookending its love story with everything that happens before and after that big Hollywood kiss.

One Day tries to deviate from the typical whirlwind romance movie by bookending its love story with everything that happens before and after that big Hollywood kiss. Based on David Nicholls's novel, the film follows the lives of two students who agree to start a friendship after a botched one-night stand after college graduation, and visits them on the anniversary of that date (July 15) each year. As Dexter and Emma embark on adulthood, their lives and careers change and intersect, and the status of their platonic relationship is brought into question as they keep in touch.

It's an inspired concept, but it's impossible to pack 20 years' worth of events into two hours without cutting a few corners. Though Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway are well cast as our romantic leads, some of their magic is sacrificed to push through the evolution of their relationship.

Jim Sturgess Describes Meeting Anne Hathaway as an "Intense Blind Date"

Until now, Jim Sturgess may have been best known for his roles in Across the Universe and 21, but it's his upcoming turn as Dexter Mayhew in the big-screen adaptation of the best seller One Day that's likely to cement his heartthrob status in the states.

Until now, Jim Sturgess may have been best known for his roles in Across the Universe and 21, but it's his upcoming turn as Dexter Mayhew in the big-screen adaptation of the best seller One Day that's likely to cement his heartthrob status in the states. We sat down with Jim in NYC just days before One Day's release to get the scoop on his first impression of leading lady Anne Hathaway and her British accent. Jim also revealed which famous men he modeled Dexter's many looks after and spoke candidly about the pressure he feels to please the fans of the novel. Watch our interview with Jim, check out One Day in theaters Friday, and don't forget to see his costar Anne in our latest episodes of I'm a Huge Fan!

Anne Hathaway Talks About Her "Best" Boyfriend at the NYC Premiere of One Day

Anne Hathaway wore Alexander McQueen last night to the NYC premiere of her new movie One Day.

Anne Hathaway wore Alexander McQueen last night to the NYC premiere of her new movie One Day. She laughed with costar Jim Sturgess on the red carpet, but was apparently happy to chat all about her real-life love. Anne Hathaway spoke about boyfriend Adam Shulman, saying, "I'm a romantic at heart — he's the best. . . . I couldn’t say enough about him." Adam didn't pose with Anne at the screening, though, and she hung with her movie buddies at the after party held inside the Russian Tea Room. For the bash, Anne changed into a nude gown from Carven. Anne was able to promote her big screen romance during a break from wearing her Catwoman costume for The Dark Knight Rises. Anne also spoke yesterday about fan reactions to seeing her in the suit. She said, "What I am happy to say is, if you didn't like the photo, you only see about a 10th of what that suit can do. And if you did like the photo, you have excellent taste."

Jim Sturgess Is Afraid of Disappointing Fans of One Day

Adorable British actor Jim Sturgess stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live this week as he starts making the promotional rounds for One Day.

Adorable British actor Jim Sturgess stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live this week as he starts making the promotional rounds for One Day. As a big fan of the novel, I'm not surprised that Sturgess is feeling some pressure about his performance as leading man Dexter. Watch as he talks about meeting a die-hard fan of the book and hilariously describes the look of disappointment on her face when he reveals his role in the film.

One Day Trailer: Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess's Slice of Life and Love

I've been patiently waiting for a glimpse of the movie adaptation of One Day ever since I read the last page of David Nicholls's novel last year.

I've been patiently waiting for a glimpse of the movie adaptation of One Day ever since I read the last page of David Nicholls's novel last year. The story chronicles the friendship of Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess) over 20 years by visiting where they are in their lives on the same day each year. Though we're only privy to a cross section, it's enough to see how the relationship between them changes as they experience the realistic twists and turns of growing up.

I was always behind the casting of Sturgess as cocky, charming Dex, but I was a little more concerned about Hathaway as quiet, brainy Emma (mostly because she's American) — and as the trailer proves, her accent is a bit distracting. I'm also a bit disappointed that the preview gives away a lot of the novel's plot, complete with a more sappy veneer. Still, the film has potential, and maybe it's best not to judge it by this preview. Have a look for yourself when you read more

Trailer: It's a Long Way Back For Colin Farrell and Jim Sturgess

When I think of Siberia, two words come to mind: cold and remote.

When I think of Siberia, two words come to mind: cold and remote. The trailer for The Way Back, which is set in Siberia in 1940, certainly plays up both of those conditions. The film, which is based on the memoir by Sławomir Rawicz, follows three soldiers (Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess, and Colin Farrell) as they escape from a Soviet labor camp. The break out is just the beginning of a long trek that includes climbing the Himalayas as they seek a passage through India to safe territory.

This preview has "epic" written all over it: epic journey, epic music, epic true story. But will the inspiration be overshadowed by bleak overtones? The trailer looks heart-pumping and gut-wrenching, which is enough to get me to the theater. (My big crush on Jim Sturgess may or may not play a small part as well). See it for yourself after the jump.

Anne Hathaway Steams Up the Set With a French Kiss

Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess shot a major makeout scene on the set of One Day in Paris this morning.

Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess shot a major makeout scene on the set of One Day in Paris this morning. Anne looked chic for her second day in a row of filming, still sporting the same pixie-cut wig she donned yesterday. The romantic comedy, an adaptation of a much-loved book, is just one of the onscreen love stories Anne has worked on recently. She also stars opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in their potentially melodramatic movie Love and Other Drugs, which hits theaters around the holidays.
