Taylor Kitsch tries his hand at a big-screen action hero in this week's John Carter. But is the film worth a trip to Mars with the Friday Night Lights star? We'll tell you if the film is a watch, pass, or rent!
Hi, I'm Annie Skutter, and in "Watch, Pass, or Rent," we're talking about John Carter. Taylor Kitsch plays the title character in this action film based on the classic sci-fi book series. He's a Civil War vet who gets transported to Mars and has to save the planet and his princess. Mars...I'm on Mars. Fans of the fantasy genre will probably love the visual effects on this but since the books have already inspired a lot of sci-fi films on the past, John Carter sort of loses its its wow factor, since it feels a little bit like something you've already seen before. If you're a fan of Friday Night Lights, you'll be happy to know that Taylor Kitsch spends much of this movie shirtless and in an loincloth and if you don't know who he is you'll still enjoy his performance because he holds his own as an action hero. Even thought Taylor Kitsch is a entertaining leading man, he gets bog down in a story that's filled too many plot lines and characters. It seems they are trying to cram in too much from the book, and as an audience member you don't know who to care about or why. The visuals and costumes are beautiful, but it just feels too much like Avatar or Star Wars. Plus, the plot isn't that engaging. So unless you're a Taylor Kitsch fan, I give that a pass.
