Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows — Haven't We Already Played This Game?

Giving the people more of what they want is usually the principle behind sequels, and it definitely holds true for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, but a good sequel takes what works and makes it better.

Giving the people more of what they want is usually the principle behind sequels, and it definitely holds true for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, but a good sequel takes what works and makes it better. Though this follow-up to the 2009 hit retains the chemistry of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, it disappoints by failing to add anything to the franchise. This time, Holmes is as intelligent, stubborn, and incorrigible as ever, but Watson is trying to evolve by getting married. Unfortunately, Watson's marital status is just about the only development for either of the main characters.

This time, we follow Holmes and Watson as they trace a series of crimes to Holmes's infamous nemesis Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), who has been leaving clues around Europe that he's laying the groundwork for war. Holmes is hot on his trail, while a batch of assassins are hot on Holmes and Watson's trail, leading to a game of cat and mouse that could be fun to watch, if the story was told in an engaging way. Unfortunately, plot points are withheld until the last moment, and the twists are so convoluted that you're lost along the way. It's a shame, because the film could have been a satisfying sequel, but instead it feels like a half-baked shadow of its predecessor. To find out what I mean, just keep reading.

Jude Law Opens the London Film Festival With a Cute Cap and Suit

Jude Law hit the red carpet for the premiere of 360 in England last night.

Jude Law hit the red carpet for the premiere of 360 in England last night. He had some time off from the West End stage and his well-reviewed Anna Christie, which his pal Cameron Diaz checked out last week. Yesterday's event kicked off the BFI London Film Festival, and Jude posed with artistic director Sandra Hebron on his way into the screening. Jude's costars Rachel Weisz and Anthony Hopkins didn't join him in promoting the film, and they were likewise absent at the afterparty, which was held at Saatchi Gallery. Jude's back to focusing on his big-screen career now that his run in the West End production of Anna Christie has wrapped. He also has Hugo and Sherlock Holmes 2 coming out later this year, and two new posters for Sherlock Holmes were just released ahead of its December opening.

Buzz Time Machine: Matt Damon Creeps Out Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow

Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jude Law star in this week's Contagion, but the film isn't the first time the trio has teamed up for a project.

Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jude Law star in this week's Contagion, but the film isn't the first time the trio has teamed up for a project. Before he played Paltrow's husband in the film about a deadly outbreak, Damon played a man who wanted to steal her fiancé's (Law) identity in The Talented Mr. Ripley. In this scene from the late '90s — when the actors are all still in their 20s and a young Law is looking particularly good — Damon's character unnerves the couple with his disturbingly good impression. Watch as creeped-out looks wash over both Paltrow's and Law's faces.

Keira Knightley and Jude Law Take on Tolstoy

There's been rumors of a big-screen adaptation of Anna Karenina flying around for awhile, but now it's official.

There's been rumors of a big-screen adaptation of Anna Karenina flying around for awhile, but now it's official. Focus Features is taking on Tolstoy's iconic novel, with Keira Knightley and Jude Law set to star. The movie will be directed by Joe Wright, who previously worked with Knightley on Atonement and Pride and Prejudice; Tom Stoppard, the Oscar-winning scribe behind Shakespeare in Love, wrote the screenplay. This sounds like a team made in filmmaking heaven, so it sounds like the iconic story is in very capable hands. Fans of the book — how do you feel about the way the movie is coming together?

Jude Law stopped by the English outpost of popular celebrity dining spot The Ivy yesterday, where he was spotted having lunch with actress Ruth Wilson. The pair are costars in the play Anna Christie, which is now running in London. The West End production stars Jude as an Irish sailor and has been garnering rave reviews for both actors. Jude may be taking a break from the movie set in favor of the stage, but his latest film, Contagion, hits theaters on Sept. 9 and will also premiere at the Venice Film Festival this Saturday. The Steven Soderbergh-directed thriller boasts a heavyweight cast that also includes Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Matt Damon, who was in LA over the weekend for a press day to promote the project. He opened up about working with Steven and his family life as he spoke with reporters. Matt even revealed that his nickname is Red Alert, a moniker his wife has given him for his sweetly protective approach to parenting their three daughters.

Jude Law's Latest Stage Performance Garners Rave Reviews

Jude Law and his overgrown beard left the Donmar Theater in London recently.

Jude Law and his overgrown beard left the Donmar Theater in London recently. Jude's currently starring in a stage production of Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie and drawing rave reviews from critics for his "humour, tenderness and sudden moments of intense physical and emotional violence in the role of the Irish stoker." Jude found time in his hectic schedule to fit in a return to the stage despite a packed Fall schedule. He's starring in at least three films set to be released later this year. Contagion is first up on Sept. 9 with Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, and Gwyneth Paltrow, a tale of a worldwide epidemic threatening to stamp out the human population. Next, Jude will hit the promotional circuit for his 3D children's fantasy Hugo Cabret before its Nov. 23 release. Finally, his big-budget holiday sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows opens Dec. 16.

Hugo Trailer: All Aboard Scorsese's Magical Mystery Tour

Forget what you think you know about Martin Scorsese movies, because the acclaimed director has gone in a completely different direction for his next release, Hugo.

Forget what you think you know about Martin Scorsese movies, because the acclaimed director has gone in a completely different direction for his next release, Hugo. Based on the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Scorsese takes us on an adventure, told through the eyes of a young orphan (Asa Butterfield) living in a train station in Paris. When he meets a young friend (Chloe Moretz), they team up to discover a world of magic and whimsy.

The trailer is absolutely gorgeous, and suffice it to say that it took my breath away. Sacha Baron Cohen seems perfectly cast as a villainous station inspector, while Jude Law appears briefly as Hugo's loving father. Though most of Scorsese's trademarks (Leonardo DiCaprio, gratuitous violence) are missing here, his impeccable style and talent shine through. The must-see movie hits theaters this Thanksgiving, but check it out when you read more

Contagion Trailer: An Outbreak Hits the A-List

It's always a dream to see such Hollywood heavy hitters like Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, and Kate Winslet together, but the plot of the thriller Contagion plays out more like a nightmare.

It's always a dream to see such Hollywood heavy hitters like Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, and Kate Winslet together, but the plot of the thriller Contagion plays out more like a nightmare. In the film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, Damon plays the husband of Paltrow, whose character is one of the first patients infected with a deadly, highly contagious disease. As he tries to figure out the mystery illness that infected his wife so quickly, Winslet, Marion Cotillard, and Jude Law also costar as scientists who are studying the rapid outbreak, which begins to wipe out a great deal of the population.

There's a lot of Paltrow's sickness-ridden face and Damon panicking, but the movie seems like a good old action sci-fi flick with an apocalyptic bent. Even though the movie looks likely to make everyone in its amazing cast a victim of a deadly epidemic, the star-studded roster is making me super excited to see it.
