Kate Middleton Can't Help but Smile When She's in Familiar Territory

Jun 10 2014 - 5:20am

The Duchess of Cambridge was in familiar territory when she arrived in Greenwich, England, on Tuesday to launch the United Kingdom's bid for the America's Cup in 2017. Kate Middleton wore a white and black Jaeger dress as she arrived at the National Maritime Museum to take part in the breakfast reception. Boat racing is close to the duchess's heart, as she is a keen sailor herself. She famously beat Prince William when they had a friendly yacht race [1] at a royal appearance in New Zealand back in April. (Who could forget Kate's winning shrug [2]?) She also worked on a boat during her gap year before going to college at St Andrews in Scotland and joined a dragon boat racing team when she and Prince William briefly split in 2007.

Tuesday's event marks the duchess's first solo event since her tour of Australia and New Zealand in April, but she has plenty of royal engagements to attend to in the coming weeks. Saturday is the Trooping the Colour event [3], which is the official public celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's birthday and typically draws the entire royal family for a day of parades and pageantry. Next week, she is also an expected guest at the Garter Service at Windsor Castle, where William will participate as a member of the Order of the Garter. Today also marks the 93rd birthday of Prince Philip, who will be celebrating by hosting a garden party in Buckingham Palace with the queen [4]. There's no word on if Kate will make it back to the palace in time for that event, but the guest list will include thousands of people who have contributed to the UK and the Commonwealth over the years.
