Lupita Nyong'o's Win Pulls on Everyone's Heartstrings

The laughter and smiles that so often define the Oscars came to a halt after the best supporting actress winner was announced in LA on Sunday. Lupita Nyong'o's eyes filled with tears as she accepted the trophy for her riveting performance in 12 Years a Slave. “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is due to so much pain in someone else’s,” she said, dedicating the award to Patsey, the slave she portrays in the film. When the camera cut to the audience, it was clear several people were moved. At one point, Benedict Cumberbatch was crying.

The 12 Years a Slave star looked stunning in a blue Prada gown — which she said reminded her of "Nairobi blue" — and accessorized it with a winning grin for her Academy Awards debut. Lupita's road to the Oscars red carpet has been paved with accolades and awards; she's garnered tons of praise for her role as Patsey in the film adaptation of Solomon Northup's memoir and has already picked up trophies for the best supporting actress honor at the Critics' Choice Awards, SAGs, NAACP Image Awards, and Saturday's Independent Spirit Awards.
