Fall officially starts tomorrow, but we're not ready to give up the warm days of Summer just yet. There were so many fun celebrity moments in the last few months, and we spotted lots of stars getting out of town to enjoy tropical vacations with their friends and family. Beyoncé Knowles recently celebrated her birthday on a yacht in Croatia while Gwyneth Paltrow spent a bikini beach day in Porto Cervo, Italy. There are so many more getaways to check out so take a look back at all the places celebrities visited as we say goodbye to the sunny Summer of 2011!
There's lots of news in the olfactory arena these days. It seems that Madonna (not for the first time, either) is rumored to be in talks with celebrity eau giant Coty to make her own fragrance. Meanwhile, Estée Lauder has already signed a deal with designer label Marni to create a scent, and the brand is also supposedly in talks with Tory Burch about a perfume. (Although there's also word that Burch may be set to make a deal with Coty.)
While companies have wanted to make a Madonna perfume for decades now, her demands have surpassed what any could match. She was rumored to be signing deals in 1997 and 2007, but neither ever came to fruition. This time could be different, though, since she and daughter Lourdes Leon have their Material Girl line, which already includes makeup and even body spray. If a scent does make it to market, let's all hope it's as high-quality as Madge herself.
The Venice Film Festival kicked off last Wednesday with George Clooney's self-directed political drama The Ides of March opening the competition, and since then many of Hollywood's hottest stars have also premiered upcoming projects in front of Italian audiences. Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon were among the latest to roll through over the weekend, along with Colin Firth, James Franco, Michael Fassbender, and others. There's more to come, but for now click through to see all the beautiful fashion and famous faces taking Venice by storm!
Madonna and her kids Lourdes Leon and Rocco Ritchie arrived at Heathrow Airport on their way to NYC on Saturday. They were joined by Mercy and David and Madonna's boyfriend Brahim Zaibat for their recent Mediterranean vacation, which included Jet Skiing in Antibes and plenty of time in the sun. Madonna later switched gears to attend the Venice Film Festival, where she promoted her directorial project, W.E.. She hit the red carpet in a glamorous Vionnet gown for the film's premiere and was back in a dressed-up look for the Gucci Award For Women in Cinema Soiree on Friday. Madonna presented Jessica Chastain with the night's honor before packing up her family and heading to the states. Despite her busy travel schedule, Madonna found time to congratulate her ex Guy Ritchie on the birth of his child with girlfriend Jacqui Ainsley after he reportedly called her to share the exciting news.
Madonna, Salma Hayek, and James Franco were among the guests at tonight's very first Gucci Award For Women in Cinema Soiree at the Venice Film Festival. The fashion house announced its intention to create the award last October, with the goal of recognizing the big-screen project or talent that best exemplifies the role of women in the movies. Salma arrived on the arm of her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, who is the head of Gucci Group. Madonna brought her longtime manager, Guy Oseary, as her date. James Franco also took a brief break from work to attend the celebration of cinema. The Gucci Pour Homme fragrance spokesmodel has been spending the last days of Summer in Detroit as he shoots Oz: The Great and Powerful, but he was part of the jury that selected this year's winner, who Madonna presented with her award. The nominees included female producers, screenwriters, and directors, but Jessica Chastain ended up taking home the top honor for her Tree of Life performance.
Madonna was decked out in a black lace dress Dolce & Gabanna this morning as she left Venice's Hotel Excelsior and hopped into a water taxi. She made her way over to where the action is going down at the city's film festival, ready to tackle another day of press for her directional feature W.E. Madonna wore Vionnet to yesterday's premiere along with her leading ladies Abbie Cornish and Andrea Riseborough. However, W.E.'s reviews are pretty poor from critics. According to some reviews, moviegoers in Venice were laughing at inappropriate times and the film is said to be pretty, but without much substance. Producer Harvey Weinstein now needs to assess how much money he'll put into promoting the project ahead of its December release. She unfortunately has some other unpleasant business to contend with. Madonna's being sued over the use of "Material Girl" in her Macy's line, and she'll be required to appear in an LA courtroom next month.
Madonna strode the red carpet in a beautiful dress by Vionnet at the Venice Film Festival, where she is debuting her film W.E. Her dress choice has extra special meaning: costumes for her film were reproduced from the original Madeleine Vionnet archive. Madonna looks ultra elegant, even with the bright red sunglasses. Her blue silk satin dress is beaded with red butterflies, making for a dreamy effect. For all the angles on Madonna's glamorous outing, click the slideshow.
Madonna stepped out in a butterfly-bedecked Vionnet gown and matching sunglasses as she debuted her directorial project W.E. at the Venice Film Festival this evening. The multitalented Madge gave the stars of her film, Abbie Cornish and Andrea Riseborough, a warm welcome on the red carpet, and she also had fans in Valentino and Marisa Tomei, who both turned up at the event. Reviews of W.E. have been mixed, but the period piece is so far faring better with the critics than her first effort behind the camera, 2008's Filth and Wisdom. Earlier today, Madonna gave a press conference to talk about the movie and credited her exes Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie with encouraging her directorial dreams. Madonna has dated several men in Hollywood, but the creative talents of her current flame lie elsewhere; Madonna's new beau, 24-year-old Brahim Zaibat, is a professional breakdancer.
Madonna and Kate Winslet lent their star power to the Venice Film Festival this morning. Kate was on hand for a photo call on behalf of her upcoming film Carnage, a Roman Polanski-directed version of the hit play Gods of Carnage. Joining Kate were her costars John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz. Kate, whose recent attempt at a vacation on Richard Branson's Necker Island was disrupted by a devastating fire, was nonetheless looking refreshed in a LBD and Michael Kors sandals. Madonna, meanwhile, wrapped up her fun in the South of France in order to attended a press event for her directorial project WE. She had leading ladies Abbie Cornish and Andrea Riseborough for company as they smiled for the cameras. Madonna said her talented exes were partially responsible for her venturing behind the lens. She told reporters today, "I am and was attracted to very creative people, which is why I married Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, two very talented directors. They both encouraged me as a director and as a creative person to do what I did, and they were both very supportive."
Madonna was back on a jet ski yesterday for more fun in the Mediterranean with her kids Mercy and Lourdes, as well as her boyfriend, Brahim. Lourdes Leon was in a bikini for their latest day on the water, just as she was last week, though this time it seemed she had a guy pal there to hang out and jet ski with. Madonna and her crew have moved to the South of France, where they're staying at the Eden Roc Hotel in Antibes, following a stay on the Basque coast. She's due to show off her movie WE at the Toronto Film Festival, but first up will be a stop in Italy. Madonna will also premiere the biopic about Wallis Simpson and Prince Edward on Sept. 1 during the Venice Film Festival.
