With her sexy outfits [1] and wild onstage antics, Miley Cyrus [2] may not be everyone's cup of tea, but she is actually not as bad as some critics would have you believe. To prove this, we've gathered some of the most surprising, funny, and little-known Miley facts that sometimes get lost in the mix when people start talking about her tongue-wagging and twerking [3]. Look, we're not saying you have to join the Miley fan club, but these facts will definitely change the way you think about the former Disney star.

She Didn't Really Earn That Much From Hannah Montana

Back in 2010, during Hannah Montana's height in popularity, Miley was only paid $15,000 per episode [5] for her hit Disney Channel show. Meanwhile, Selena Gomez [6] earned $25,000 per episode for Wizards of Waverly Place, and Miranda Cosgrove earned $180,000 an episode for Nickelodeon's iCarly. Of course, Miley made heaps of money from endorsement deals, album sales, and licensing agreements.

She started a really great foundation.

In 2015, Miley announced the official launch of the Happy Hippie Foundation [7], a nonprofit organization that is devoted to helping homeless youth, LGBT youth, and other vulnerable populations. Shortly after its launch, Miley spoke about the homeless problem [8], saying, "It's like the birds chirping. We're consciously ignoring it at all times, but it's always happening right in front of us."

She Considers Herself a Feminist

Miley's sexy image may be criticized by some for being "degrading," but she doesn't see herself as bad for women [9]. "I feel like I'm one of the biggest feminists in the world, because I tell women to not be scared of anything," she said in a November 2013 interview. She also noted that her antics are all just part of her act, adding, "I don't actually walk around all day twerking with my tongue out dressed as a teddy bear."

She Saved Her Best Friend From the Barista Life

Miley hired her best friend, Cheyne Jackson, to be her personal assistant when he was still working at Starbucks. "And I was like, 'F*ck that,'" Miley told Rolling Stone in September 2013 [10]. "My best friend can't work at Starbucks! We've been working ever since." Now, Cheyne dances on stage with Miley during her shows and occasionally plays the role of Bad Santa (pictured).

She Never Lip-Syncs

Back in 2011, Miley said during an interview on The Late Show [11] that she always sings live, even if critics will trash her online for not sounding perfect. "You can YouTube me, and half the comments are like, 'She sings like crap!' And I'm like, at least I'm singing live," she said.

Her Godmother Is Dolly Parton

Dolly became Miley's godmother after she grew close to Miley's father, Billy Ray Cyrus, back when he was a country star.

She Was One of the First Disney Stars to Support Gay Rights

Miley Cyrus [12] was one of the first of her Disney peers to come out as a strong supporter of gay rights [13]. In 2010, she penned "My Heart Beats For Love" off her Can't Be Tamed album for her "gay fans." (Keep in mind that this was when Hannah Montana was still on the air.) In 2012, she got an equal sign tattooed on her finger, which she said was to support marriage equality.

She Has a Tattoo of a Teddy Roosevelt Quote

"It's about how people judge who wins and who loses, but they're not the ones in there fighting," she told Rolling Stone magazine [14] in September 2013. In other words, "It's about critics."

The quote reads, "So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat." It's taken from Teddy's "Citizens in a Republic" speech, given in Paris in 1910.

She Has a Heart Condition

Miley suffers from tachycardia [15], or a faster-than-normal heart rate. "The type of tachycardia I have isn't dangerous. It won't hurt me, but it does bother me," Miley wrote in her 2009 autobiography, Miles to Go. "There is never a time on stage when I'm not thinking about my heart."

She Can Actually Sing

One just-plain-untrue criticism of Miley is that she can't sing. While some people may not care for her vocal work on her more popular tracks like "Wrecking Ball" or "Can't Be Tamed," she clearly has a good voice. Listen to her cover Dolly Parton's "Jolene" above.
