Broken English: Parker Posey, All Grown Up

The realization struck me hard about halfway through Broken English: Parker Posey isn't Party Girl anymore.

The realization struck me hard about halfway through Broken English: Parker Posey isn't Party Girl anymore. She hasn't been Party Girl for years, of course, and the roles she's taken have evolved steadily from neurotic 20-somethings to neurotic 30-somethings. But in Broken English, I saw for the first time that Posey and her characters are adults now — a little less hopeful, a little more world-weary, a lot more afraid of the idea that this could be the best life gets.

Posey plays Nora Wilder, a chronically single 30-something who once dreamed of an art career but ended up as the guest relations director at a boutique hotel. In the name of "putting herself out there," she launches into a series of bad dates — one with a famous actor who later tells a Hollywood news program he's dating his costar; another with a sad sack of a man who can't get over his ex. Then, at an almost laughably bad party thrown by a coworker, Nora meets Julien (Melvil Poupaud), who's sweet, attentive, romantic — and about to return to Paris. Julien encourages Nora to run away to Paris with him, and she's too practical (or too self-sabotaging, or too scared) to go. But at the urging of a friend, she ultimately takes off for the romantic city, in search of a fantasy of love. That's just the skeleton, so to hear more of what I thought, read more

Family Fun At the FOX TCAs

Wentworth, Kiefer, Hugh, Oh My!

Wentworth, Kiefer, Hugh, Oh My! I could probably stop this story here and you all would be psyched to just jump into that gallery to check out images of FOX's finest. As you can see from the collage, I want to point out all the other fun things that happened at the FOX TCAs this week. The coolest event by far was the live read of a special uncensored version of the 100th episode of The Family Guy. Click here for a sneak peek! Other highlights include:

  • House fans want to know what's in store for season four? The actors told us tons so click here for more.
  • Parker Posey hits the small screen with co-star Lauren Ambrose in a touching comedy called The Return of Jezebel James. We can't wait to see these actresses working together. The exec producer is the creator of Gilmore Girls which even she said she hopes to end her series appropriately someday.
  • 24 will have a female president - Guess who got cast.
  • Family Guy's 100th episode includes guests stars like Rob Lowe and there is a chance the show may hit the big screen like The Simpsons.
  • A new reality like series called Nashville aiming to be the next Laguna Beach - Setting my TiVo now.
  • Julianna Margulies changes professions as a big shot lawyer with a sad past. The actress was very charming - almost enough to make me want to watch a legal show since I haven't liked my options recently. She also said she and George Clooney have been trying to work together for years and that she hopes "he'll direct it, and we'll do something funny together." Stay tuned.

After the panels, FOX rented out the Santa Monica Pier. The cast of House hit the bumper cars while other FOX celebs played ski ball and more. I rode the roller coaster - Fun times!

Parker Posey: Not A Geek, Still Chic

While she may play neurotic high-powered women on film, actress Parker Posey is decidedly ungeeky.

While she may play neurotic high-powered women on film, actress Parker Posey is decidedly ungeeky. In fact, if the interview she recently did with Switched is any indication, she abhors gadgets all together. She doesn't give any clue as to where her hatred of all things electronic sprang from, but her repugnance translates to some funny anti-tech sentiments. Is it just me, or does she rebuke the iPhone faster than Bill Gates? Highlights include:

  • What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?
    I don't.
  • What cell phone do you have right now and what to you love or hate about it?
Nokia, plain, no flap. It's easy to replace when lost.
  • Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?
    A chair or a couch.
  • Name one thing you wish your iPod, cell phone, or laptop could do that it doesn't do now?
    Disappear.
  • What upcoming gadget can you not wait to get your hands on?
The gadget that will make all the gadgets go away.
  • BlackBerry, Sidekick, or Treo?
    Sure -- I mean, what?
  • Are you getting an iPhone -- if so, why?
    No, it doesn't make sense.

Posey & Drea Debut Their Broken English

Yay, how cute is the premiere of Broken English!?

Yay, how cute is the premiere of Broken English!? Sorry, sometimes I get a little excited about Parker Posey, Sofia Coppola, and Drea de Matteo -- so when they're all together it's pretty awesome. The movie they're out to celebrate looks pretty seriously precious and funny and endearing, too. Everything about this (other than Drea's dress, but she's pregnant, so she gets a bye) just makes me feel all fuzzy and indie-loving. And I mean that in the best way possible.

Movie Preview: Parker Posey in Broken English

Broken English first caught my eye when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year because it stars one of the greatest film actresses out there (Parker Posey), and because it was written and directed by a lady (Zoe Cassavetes).

Broken English first caught my eye when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year because it stars one of the greatest film actresses out there (Parker Posey), and because it was written and directed by a lady (Zoe Cassavetes). Since then, I've just been waiting for it to come out, and this Friday the wait is over. Originally, it looked like a comedy — and was billed as such — but now, having seen the trailer I'm not so sure. It looks a lot like a romantic drama with some moments of funny thrown in, but you can see for yourself.

Posey stars as 30-something Nora whose mother keeps urging her to "settle down." When an intriguing Frenchman enters her life, Nora decides to move to Paris in the pursuit of love and happiness (or, as one French man pronounces it in the trailer, "ah-peeness"). I really can't wait to see this movie now that I've watched the sweet-looking trailer, so to check it out, read more

Pilot Watch: "The Return of Jezebel James"

The networks have announced their fall schedules, but which of the series will actually be worth watching?

The networks have announced their fall schedules, but which of the series will actually be worth watching? Throughout the summer, as I watch the pilots, I'll be posting my first impressions. Note that a lot can change before a show actually makes it to air, so these aren't comprehensive reviews, just quick thoughts on how the shows look now. Today's installment: Fox's "The Return of Jezebel James."

What's it about? Two estranged sisters — a driven book editor and an alterna-slacker — reconnect when the younger sister agrees to carry the older one's baby.

Who's in it? Parker Posey, Lauren Ambrose, Michael Arden, Scott Cohen

The good: The show is written by Amy Sherman-Palladino of "Gilmore Girls" fame, and the first episode packs in plenty of her signature snappy dialogue. Posey and Ambrose have a great sisterly chemistry, and the plot seems full of potential for at least a couple of strong seasons.

The bad: The production of this show was a huge turnoff for me. It's a half-hour comedy that should be a one-hour drama — or, at the very least, a comedy produced more in the style of "The Office." At least a couple of good lines got buried in the distracting laugh track, and the show felt very sound-stage-y — I'm not sure there was a single exterior shot! The episode also seemed rushed, as though 30 minutes wasn't enough for all the plot and character development the writers wanted to do.

Will I watch? This show has two of my favorite actresses and one of my favorite writers, so I want it to be good. But I have to say, if this show doesn't change a lot before it makes it to the air at midseason, I don't think I'll be watching.

Parker Poses for High School Yearbook Photos

Parker Posey looks pretty ca-yute in this here photo shoot, but they totally remind me of my high school yearbook senior portrait shoot.

Parker Posey looks pretty ca-yute in this here photo shoot, but they totally remind me of my high school yearbook senior portrait shoot. Instead of your usual grayish blue backdrop (or, if you were feeling bold, the lasers!) the photographers took us outside to pose in the "nature" (read: small patch of grass directly outside designated photo room). Anyhow, heeerrreee's Parker's Glamour Shots. I think I prefer the non-grandmother-y dress to its counterpart. Also, I enjoy me some Ryan Adams, but I gotta say she's looking great since leaving his alt-countryness behind.

Half Nelson Tops Gotham Awards

The Gotham Awards sparked some controversy this year for allowing big studio backed films to compete with the low budget indies that the show usually recognizes. However, this did not keep the stars away and it looks like the indies still dominated the awards despite competition from The Departed. Half Nelson was the big winner of the night with best feature, breakthrough director and breakthrough actor (Go Ryan Gosling!). Babel also won for best ensemble cast. Everyone at this award show took things pretty seriously. Brittany Murphy seems to be the only one willing to play to the cameras. It's a good thing too because you know Sean Penn won't do it!
