Twice Born Trailer: Emile Hirsch and Penelope Cruz Are War-Torn Lovers

Director Sergio Castellitto proves you don't need dialogue to create a powerful snapshot of a film in the trailer for Twice Born, an Italian movie premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Director Sergio Castellitto proves you don't need dialogue to create a powerful snapshot of a film in the trailer for Twice Born, an Italian movie premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie stars Penelope Cruz as a single mother traveling back to Sarajevo with her adolescent son. It's the setting where the boy's father (Emile Hirsch), an American photographer, was killed during the Bosnian conflict in the 1990s. The mostly wordless trailer shows the film will be set both in the time when Cruz and Hirsch's characters are together and years later when their son is grown.

I'm constantly surprised to see where Emile Hirsch pops up on the silver screen, and given the dual time lines, I'll be interested to see whether the film will follow a chronological format or bounce back and forth through the decades. Either way, this is sure to be an emotional ride. Check out the trailer for Twice Born after the jump.

Penelope Cruz Nabs the September Cover of W

Penelope Cruz covers W's upcoming September issue, which will be on newsstands Aug.

Penelope Cruz covers W's upcoming September issue, which will be on newsstands Aug. 21. She spoke about her upcoming film, Venuto al Mondo, in the publication, as well as her most recent Woody Allen collaboration, To Rome With Love. Penelope spoke about her career and relationships with directors like Woody and Spain's Pedro Almodovar. She also touched on working with her husband, Javier Bardem, and her secret to acting in a comedy. Here are highlights from Penelope Cruz in W:

  • On working in foreign languages with Woody: "He gave [her and Javier] the [Vicky Cristina Barcelona] script he wrote in English, and he gave us the freedom to translate and improvise. Woody told me recently that he still doesn’t know if we are talking about the atomic bomb. And it's the same thing in To Rome With Love — he doesn't speak Italian. I translated my lines. So he still doesn't know what I am saying."
  • On working in English, not her native language: "There is a part of your brain that has to stop when you're acting. You have to be in the moment and dare to fly. Words can't be on your mind. And yet, when you are working in a foreign language, you have to be thinking about the words every single second. It's difficult, but I'm not complaining. It's just the way it is."
  • The key to acting in a comedy: "I don't play comedy as comedy. That would be the biggest trap. I think about the characters and their situations. Then you don't have to worry where the laugh is going to be. But comedy is harder than drama."

There have been rumors that Penelope's pregnant with her and Javier's second child — they welcomed a son, Leo Bardem, in January 2011 — but her rep recently denied the stories. Nonetheless, the Spanish TV show Espejo Publico recently ran another story, allegedly confirmed by friends, that Penelope is indeed expecting. Penelope Cruz wore Emilio Pucci to join her To Rome With Love costars last night in NYC for a screening at the Paris Theatre in honor of their film's release tomorrow. She linked up with costars Alec Baldwin, Greta Gerwig, and director Woody Allen for the premiere. Alec made the rounds with fiancée Hilaria Thomas on his arm, while Woody Allen fan Jon Hamm stepped out with his girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt. Penelope, though, skipped out on the star-studded afterparty held at Casa Lever. Chris Rock came out for the celebration, and caught up with John Legend.

Woody's latest picture is out tomorrow, but so far, early To Rome With Love reviews are mixed. It's his and Penelope's second project together after 2008's Vicky Cristina Barcelona — do you plan on seeing this one? Penelope was thrilled to pair up with Woody again, saying at a press conference Tuesday, "I find him so fascinating. He's so unique. I'm lucky that I get to be directed by somebody that I admire so much, and I am lucky I get to hang out with him."
