Jennifer Trades Her Inner Monster For Something More Alluring

Jennifer Lopez is Allure's January cover girl. She posed for a few photos with a young fan named Yamarie Mayol, who was visiting with the Make A Wish Foundation — to see more photos from their shoot, check out their behind-the scenes outtakes as well as her style evolution. In the issue, which hit newsstands today, she opened up about a variety of personal topics, from growing up and becoming a mom to her need for love. She said:

  • On growing up: "When you’re a creative person, there’s a certain carefree-ness about you that makes you want to ride in the convertible with the top down and your hair in the wind and all this stuff. But at a certain point you have to change your life."
  • On being changed by being a mom: "To a certain extent, having children did change me, but it made me want to look at the places that I wasn’t great and learn to love myself and take care of myself more."
  • On her need for love: "I don’t want to get all psychological and in a therapy session, but. . . there are these little things you think about. My dad worked nights and slept during the day, so we never saw him much. He was a wonderful, loving father—still is, to this day; he still calls and says, ‘How’s my little baby?’ ‘How’s my gorgeous?’ But even so, when I was five or six, I would lie in bed at night and tell myself, over and over, ‘I know my daddy loves me. . . Yet there was this kind of thing where I wondered about it...if because of his absence he didn’t care about me or about us. And believe me, my dad was the best. But these little things happen to you when you’re younger."
  • On her looks: "Part of my business is being in shape and looking good. You can’t lie to yourself about it. But I’m not the monster I used to be in the exercise department."
