Bearded Ben Affleck Talks Casting Blake and the Challenges of Being a Director

Ben Affleck got back to business last night when he stepped out for a cinema event in LA. He's home again in California following his Christmas vacation to Hawaii with his daughters and bikini-clad wife Jennifer Garner, and they arrived back just in time to celebrate Seraphina's second birthday. Ben got more good news today when The Town was included in 11 categories, including best director, on the long list for the BAFTA Awards. He recently spoke to Vanity Fair about the arduous process of making the movie, his varied experience in the film industry, and casting Blake Lively. Ben said:

  • On having done it all in the film industry and being happy as a director: "I definitely feel confident that this is what I'm supposed to be doing. I definitely feel a strange mix of confidence, in the sense that I'm really comfortable with this notion of purpose — this is what I want to do and this is what I like to do. I also know you can't control the result every time. I've seen the whole spectrum of results, and if I get the opportunity to keep working down the road, I'll make movies that work and those that don't. It's just the circle of life, as Elton John might say."
  • On getting Warner Brothers to cast Blake Lively: "They were completely supportive of her, even though at the time I think there was this idea that some people viewed her in a limited way, because sometimes you've got a TV show and you get very firmly identified with that character. But she just did so well that they then put her in Green Lantern. So it was nice."
  • On the challenges of being a director: "The part that feels like you want to do something and you're hitting walls. Or hitting resistance. Sometimes it's from the numbers of hours in the day, sometimes it's from not having enough money, sometimes it's from—not as much in the case, luckily, of the movies I've directed—but sometimes it's the people you're working with who have legit differences with you, and sometimes people are just crazy. I've seen that too."
