The stars gathered in Washington DC on Saturday night for the White House Correspondents' Dinner, where Jay Leno served as the evening's entertainment when President Obama wasn't cracking up the crowd himself. Jessica Simpson hit the red carpet in a bright yellow dress, while Scarlett Johansson arrived from LA with her politically active twin brother, Hunter. Jessica Alba wrapped up her duties as a Tribeca Film Festival juror to go with her husband Cash Warren, and Kim Kardashian wore her mother's vintage Valentino gown after deciding to put her hair up in a bun.

After the dinner were the post-parties, with the Bloomberg/Vanity Fair bash at the French Ambassador's residence bringing out celebs like Anna Kendrick and Glee's Matthew Morrison. Joe Simpson left Jessica's side to mingle with Jeremy Renner, who was linked to Jess just a few months ago. Jessica expressed her love for Michelle Obama but didn't have much to say about her current romantic status, commenting, "I have some situations that I am feeling out." She moved on to an event sponsored by People to join Gabourey Sidibe. Sex and the City 2's Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, meanwhile, posed together, while Justin Bieber caught up with "his girlfriend" Kim. Jessica managed to avoid a run-in with her ex Tony Romo, who got a head start on the good times Friday night at an event with his girlfriend Candice Crawford and her famous brother, Chace.

It may be "just a dinner" but as a taxpayer in a difficult economy I would rather NOT see my money spent this way.

I cannot understand who would have invited the untalented & overexposed D list celeb Kim Kardashian to this function. Other than her flesh-baring photos, has she done anything noteworthy? Maybe her folks gave a couple million $$ to Obamas election campaign? I'd rather see Dita von Teese performing at the White House than icky Kim prowling the scene. Was Paris Hilton there too? Why not? Roethlisberger? Heidi Montag? Bet they didn't let her meet the children.

For starters, it's not the President's dinner. It is a dinner for the press correspondents that cover the White House. The President is invited by the press. The press outlets (People, Time, NBC etc.) buy tables at the event which raises money for the press organization's scholarship fund. The press outlets then invite guests to attend and sit at the tables they have purchased. In the early days it was a reward to the reporters for a job well done. Now it has turned into a see and be seen event. The press invites celebrities so they can get their red carpet pictures for their magazines. It is a competition among the outlets to see who can get the biggest star to show. The stars show up because they get publicity and it makes them look politically active and smart. Jessica Simpson was invited by People magazine at the last moment when they realized Tony Romo would be there with his girlfriend Candice Crawford. Candice is a sports reporter and probably was invited to get her brother Chace and Tony to come to the event. You can bet your bucks that People was hoping for a Tony/Candice/Jessica photo op. The dinner is not a White House event and is held at a hotel. Almost 3,000 people attend so it is unlikely that any of the celebrities will got any where near the President. As for the dresses, Scarjo's is awful. Jessica's is OK, but a little too bright for my taste. And because it is supposed to be a black tie affair, I would say Jessica's was a little too informal for the event.

In order for a celebrity to get invited to one of these events they have to either A.) Get invited by a news organization or B.) Their people have to call a news organization that was invited and try to lobby to get in. Kim K was with Fox News (which explains a lot) and thats how she was able to get in...now wether she was invited by Fox News or her people lobbied Fox News to get invited is up in the air...im thinking the latter.

Jumping the shark?? These may be celebrities that you don't like (for whatever reason) but they are still citizens and the President can have whoever he damn well pleases to his dinners as far as I'm concerned. It's just a dinner, not like they are official White House advisors.
