Prince George on the Cover of Vanity Fair | August 2014

Prince George Lands a Vanity Fair Cover For His Birthday

Prince George isn't easily impressed, but landing a magazine cover for his first birthday may do the trick. In honor of the royal baby's big day on July 22, Vanity Fair's August cover is dedicated to his first year in the spotlight. There are plenty of interesting tidbits from royal insiders, including how his current nanny has surprising high-speed driving skills and that another royal baby could be on the way soon. Keep reading for five things we learned about the royal family in George's cover story.

  • Another royal baby could be on the way soon: There are reportedly "rumors among the couple's friends that they plan to try this Summer" for another baby. For now, George is going on many local playdates.
  • The family almost didn't travel together on the royal tour: The queen breached protocol to allow Prince William and Kate Middleton to fly together with Prince George to Australia and New Zealand. Direct heirs do not normally travel together, but the Cambridges got special permission.
  • George wasn't always so well behaved: Though Prince George was calm during his first few public appearances, for the first few months, he "cried loudly and frequently, and he was not sleeping through the night." He was apparently "permanently hungry" and didn't sleep soundly until he was introduced to solid foods this year.
  • Their new nanny is very talented: The royals' current nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, was recommended by a friend. She has expertise in "self-defense, high-speed driving, and dealing with paparazzi" and was watched carefully by Kate's parents for a week as a test run as she bonded with George.
  • Redecorating Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace is going well: Kate changed the walls in their new home from turquoise to neutral, making it "spacious and breezy." It isn't traditional and antique — Kate chose a white Beatrix Potter-themed crib and changing table — and George's godmother, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, also assisted with the redesign.
