The Royal Tour Comes to an Emotional and Moving Conclusion

Apr 24 2014 - 5:15pm

The last day of the royal tour [1] is upon us, and Prince William and Kate Middleton have a solemn day planned before they depart. In Australia it's Anzac Day, which originally served as a national day of remembrance for the lives lost in the Gallipoli Campaign in WWI but later broadened to commemorate the fallen who served in all conflicts. In an act of memoriam on the 99th year since the Anzac landings, the Duke and Duchess attended a service, placed poppies on the World War I Wall of Remembrance, and planted a tree in the Memorial Garden. Although the two have practically planted a forest by now [2], this tree carries a special meaning: the seed was taken from a lone pine at the site of the Gallipoli battle. After the ceremony, the royal couple is set to return to London.

The day marked a solemn departure from the rest of the fun on the royal tour [3], but the entire trip in itself had its ups and downs. On Thursday, the two expressed their deep sadness [4] at the passing of the brother of Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. One thing's for sure, though: we'll never get enough of adorable Prince George [5] and his many funny faces [6]. Keep scrolling to see what happened on the last day of the tour.
