Angelina Jolie Has Been Named an Honorary Dame by Queen Elizabeth

Jun 13 2014 - 4:50pm

Angelina Jolie [1] is being recognized for her humanitarian work in a big way. On Friday, the actress was named an honorary dame [2] at Queen Elizabeth's annual Birthday Honors List ceremony in London. Don't call her Dame Angelina just yet, though — that title is reserved for British or Commonwealth citizens.

After joining hundreds of others bestowed with dame and knighthood, the Oscar-winning actress said "to receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to." The words echo the sentiment she shared in a recent BBC interview, in which Angelina said her upcoming role as Cleopatra might be her last [3].

No stranger to humanitarian work, Angelina is a special envoy to the United Nations' high commissioner for refugees. Most recently, Angelina has worked to stop sexual violence in war-torn regions. Earlier this week, the activist had the support of fiancé Brad Pitt [4] at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London, where she shared the stage with US Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday. In February, Angelina visited refugees in Lebanon [5] with Great Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague.
