Rihanna skipped the red carpet but stole the spotlight at the 2013 American Music Awards in LA on Sunday evening. The pop star nabbed herself a very big honor before the show even started: the icon award. Rihanna is the first artist to receive the newly created award, which honors an artist whose music has influenced the pop world on a global level. Bill Maher introduced Rihanna, saying, "She has become the voice of our time." After the Rihanna's stellar performance of "Diamonds," the star's mother presented her with the icon trophy, saying, "Tonight I applaud and admire for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused. It's amazing how you I'm so blessed to be part of this historic moment." Rihanna had another big moment earlier in the show when she won the award for favorite soul/R&B female artist, making it the third time she's won in the category.
