Whether your mind goes first to Gwyneth Paltrow's blue Gucci snakeskin dress in 1999, conjures up images of a very Carrie Bradshaw-esque Sarah Jessica Parker in Halston, remembers Blake Lively and Karl Lagerfeld arm in arm in 2011, or jumps right to Beyoncé's flame-embroidered custom Givenchy gown from this year's festivities, you'd be right to assume that these A-listers are among the best dressed (and most memorable) in Met Gala history. We're calling it a four-way styling tie when it comes to last night's Veuve Clicquot-hosted Tate Americas Foundation Artists Dinner in NYC. Anne Hathaway — bleach-blond pixie cut still intact — went with a leg-baring soft pink Givenchy mini and gold Jimmy Choo sandals; Ciara stunned in a nude long-sleeved gown; Sarah Jessica Parker wore a vintage floral number and loaded up on a very cool mix of jewels (Fred Leighton earrings, a Repossi turquoise ring, and a Fendi cuff and rings); and Alexa Chung opted for a dark two-toned strapless cocktail dress with ankle-strap pumps. The hair and makeup at the Costume Institute Benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is consistently some of the best of the year. And with a theme centering around the Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibit, high drama was a must-have look. But surprisingly, the best looks of the evening ran the gamut of sophisticated rebel to all-out rocker.

Sarah Jessica Parker wowed the red carpet congregation with an over-the-top Trojan headpiece that was nestled among a twisting collection of fishtail braids. Nicole Richie was also a surprising arrival, sporting a wispy, gray beehive that was part powdered wig and part punk. Speaking of wigs, Madonna opted for a Bettie Page-inspired hairpiece, complete with short, blunt bangs.

Moving on to the blondes of the ball, Sienna Miller went all-out grunge with a seriously textured hairstyle embellished with a studded hairpiece, inky black liner, and a nude lipstick. And in one of the more jaw-dropping moments of the evening, Anne Hathaway stunned with a peroxide blond pompadour, accented with lavender shadow and loads of liner.

Not everyone who attended the 2013 Met Gala, which celebrates the Costume Institute's Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibit, went full punk. In fact, a lot of the looks that went up the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Monday night were anything but punk — but a handful of dedicated women tried their best to work the theme into their looks. Miley Cyrus's spiky, bleach-blond hair telegraphed Sid Vicious as much as as her sparkly mesh gown by Marc Jacobs, which had a seemingly unfinished hem, and Sarah Jessica Parker's tartan boots and mohawk headpiece spoke to two major components of the style.

Cara Delevingne's custom Burberry dress, festooned with studs, was an elegant treatment of the movement's focus on hardware, and so was Gisele Bündchen's Anthony Vacarello gown, which was held together by what looked like grommets. Christina Ricci's plaid gown was created by Vivienne Westwood, one of the designers credited with bringing punk not only into the public consciousness, but also into high fashion.

Needless to say, the actress killed it tonight in an ensemble composed of a black and gold printed Giles Deacon gown, tartan thigh-high boots by Christian Louboutin, and an outstanding Philip Treacy mohawk headpiece that only she could pull off.
