Shailene Woodley has really broken out in Divergent [2] and The Fault in Our Stars [3] this year, but she's been almost as quotable as Matthew McConaughey [4] for a while now. The free-spirited 22-year-old actress is as hippie as they come — she doesn't own a cellphone, she grows her own food and drinks exclusively from local springs, and she only wears used clothes. We've rounded up some of her craziest advice, including sunbathing your vagina, eating clay, and taking home-grown herbs for more lucid dreaming.

1. Don't shop at stores — make, grow, or gather it yourself.

"I think everything about my lifestyle is fairly alternative. I gather my own spring water from mountains every month. I go to a farm to get my food. I make everything from my own toothpaste to my own body lotions and face oils. I could go on for hours. I make my own medicines; I don't get those from doctors. I make my own cheese and forage wild foods and identify wild plants. It's an entire lifestyle. It's appealing to my soul." — Flaunt, August 2013 [5].

2. Generally, live like indigenous people did.

"I was an environmentalist in high school — or, I guess, a self-proclaimed environmentalist — and I started reading about the food system in America and how it's owned by all of these corporations. I was on a quest to find out what healthy really meant because people were saying that veganism was healthy or that the Paleo diet was healthy, but I really had no idea. So I started researching indigenous people and what their lifestyles were like because I was fascinated by the fact that they could still run in their eighties and still had amazing muscular and nervous systems, whereas in America now, by the time we get to our thirties, it's really hard for us to lose weight and maintain a healthy body and composition. So I just started adapting my lifestyle to that of indigenous people, and what I realized is that we're all indigenous creatures on this planet." — Interview, July 2013 [6].

3. Make sure to grab some herbs for lucid dreaming, too.

"There is an herb called mugwort that I've tried, which is supposed to help enhance dreams. You can burn a little before bed or sleep on a mugwort pillow. It's found in all parts of America, East Coast and West — anytime you see weeds growing through cracks in a parking lot, there's probably mugwort. You can harvest it yourself, dry it, bundle it, and burn it like sage. Specifically, mugwort is associated with lucid dreaming, which I've experienced a few times. I'm no expert, but when I've tried it, I've used a technique where you fall asleep while knocking on a wall. Something about that keeps your brain awake while your body goes to sleep, inducing that great moment when you realize, 'Wow, I'm conscious of the fact that I'm dreaming.'" — Harper's Bazaar, February 2014 [7].

4. Make sure your friends are just like you.

"We joke that our conversations sound like a Sh*t Wild People Say video. We were foraging for wild leeks in Maine last year, and one of my friends said, 'Does anyone want the rest of my rhizome?' And we all cracked up, thinking that only here and with this group of people would someone ask that question." — Natural Health, May/June 2014 [8].

5. Sing "Good morning!" and "Exciting day!" when you wake up.

"The second I wake up, I scream very loudly [sings to the tune of 'Good Morning' from Singin' in the Rain], 'Good morning! Good morning!' And then I scream out, 'Exciting day! Exciting day!' I feel like it completely sets the mood for the whole day." — Interview, July 2013 [9].

6. Use clay as toothpaste — and then eat it.

"Clay is one of the best things you can put in your body. One of my friends was making a clay toothpaste that you swallow instead of spit out. But I first heard about the benefits of eating clay from a taxi driver. He was African and was saying that, where he's from, the women eat clay when they're pregnant." — Into the Gloss, March 2014 [10].

7. You can do some oil pulling for your teeth while you're at it.

"I love a natural way to heal. You can do something called 'oil pulling' where you swish coconut or sesame oil in your mouth when you wake up and spit it out. It's amazing! It really makes your teeth whiter, because the plaque on your teeth is not water soluble, it's fat-soluble. So the lipids have to dissolve in fats, which is why oil works in your mouth. I prefer sesame oil, but they're both good." — Into the Gloss, March 2014 [11].

8. When you get dressed, make sure it's in used clothes.

"Kitson? Yeah, that'll never happen. I exclusively buy used clothes. I'm going to be a citizen of this planet, and I'm going to do my responsibility and live in stride with nature instead of constantly fighting against her." — The Hollywood Reporter, March 2014 [12].

9. Toes are really important. You should stretch them.

"There's this cool thing called prehensility, which is the way we can move our fingers and our toes, and so a friend brought it to my attention a few years ago, and I've been practicing spreading my toes and see how far I can get them, and I was able to clasp hands, but with my toes with a friend once." — Late Night With Conan O'Brien, July 2013 [13].

10. Technology is bad. Ditch your cellphone completely.

"I'm not a big technology person. I don't even have a smartphone. I don't even have a cellphone! And if I were to have one, it would be a flip-phone. . . . Since I got rid of my phone, having to pull over and be like, 'Hey, buddy — do you know how to get here?' I'm talking to people more than I've ever talked to in my life because I no longer have that crutch. The more you get away from all the technological buzz, the more freedom you have." — The Daily Beast, March 2014 [14].

11. Go out and get some sunshine . . . between your legs.

"Another thing I like to do is give my vagina a little vitamin D. I was reading an article written by an herbalist I studied about yeast infections and other genital issues. She said there's nothing better than vitamin D. If you're feeling depleted, go in the sun for an hour and see how much energy you get. Or, if you live in a place that has heavy Winters, when the sun finally comes out, spread your legs and get some sunshine." — Into the Gloss, March 2014 [15]

12. And finally, don't get too hung up on relationships.

"I haven't had time to think about a relationship! I literally have not had a boyfriend in almost five years. I've never even hooked up with anybody I've worked on a movie with." — Teen Vogue, April 2014 [16].

"I just haven't met anyone where I was like, 'Wow, I could definitely see myself spending a season of my life with you.' I don't even know if humans are genetically made to be with one person forever." — Marie Claire, April 2014 [17].
