First-Time Oscar Winner Spike Jonze Is "Ready" to Write More

Add Spike Jonze to the list of 2014 Oscar winners! He picked up the statue for best original screenplay for Her at Sunday night's show and talked about his exciting first Oscar win in the press room after taking the stage to accept his award. Spike is best known for his directing work, but he shared that more writing might be in his future: "I feel like I'm ready to actually write what's in my heart and what I have to say, so I feel like that's what this chapter of my life is going to be." He also talked about his inspiration for the film and "using the future as a way to make a heightened version of the world we live in now."

Spike elaborated on the movie's theme: "Everything is easy — we never get lost anymore, but there's still loneliness and longing. The melancholy of that idea that we should have everything we want, but we're still looking for connection — we used the future as a heightened version of those themes." He was able to do just this all without ever putting one of his lead actors, Scarlett Johansson, on camera. Only her voice was heard in the film, and Spike said that regardless he "loved what she did" and "was moved and affected by watching her create that character even though it was just in that voice."
