A Hunter's Illegal Fire Sparked the Devastating California Wildfire

A firefighter monitored the flames while battling the Rim Fire.

The US Forest Service has announced that a hunter's illegal fire led to the massive California Rim Fire that's burned almost 240,000 acres near Yosemite National Park. An investigation is under way, but since the Rim Fire started on Aug. 17, it has drawn more than 4,000 firefighters to the area to battle the flames. So far, the fire is 80 percent contained, but its overwhelming devastation makes it the largest wildfire in the Sierra Nevada's history and the fourth largest in the state of California.
