5 Things to Do With Halloween Candy

Halloween is looming, which means you're probably fearful of your kids' impending sugar highs, rambunctiousness, and wild behavior.

Halloween is looming, which means you're probably fearful of your kids' impending sugar highs, rambunctiousness, and wild behavior. Every parent has different rules regarding Halloween candy, but here are five ideas to help you cope with all that sugar and chocolate.

  1. Set Limitations – Kids need limitations, especially when it comes to candy. You must determine what is right for your family, whether that is throwing it out after Halloween night or allowing them one or two pieces after dinner each evening. Some parents might allow their kids to keep their bags, but only for a week.
  2. Give It Away – Allow your kids to keep a certain ration, then give the rest away. Take it to your office or gift it to a neighbor, the troops overseas, or your beauty salon.

5 Things Moms Should Warn the Babysitter About

It can be terrifying to leave the children alone with a babysitter.

It can be terrifying to leave the children alone with a babysitter. Anything can happen, but sometimes parents go overboard with their helicopter parenting. It's time mom enjoyed her night out, and left her worries behind. Before heading out for a girls' night out, or a date night, see our list of necessary warnings, so mama can feel safer leaving her kids at home.

5 Things to Warn Your Babysitter About:

  1. Ground Rules – Every family has some, especially when it comes to food, bedtime, and behavior. Kids will try to convince their babysitter otherwise, so be sure to make your stance clear.
  2. Any Requests – Clearly state your expectations like bathing the kids, tidying up the kitchen after dinner, and not allowing any guests. These seem pretty obvious, but it's always better to communicate your requests rather than assume they will be followed.
  3. Special Requirements – Beyond obvious health warnings like food allergies or prescribed medications, many children require certain attention. Let the sitter know what to expect, like if Tommy is still potty training or Susie needs a back rub to fall asleep.
  4. Complicated Technology – This includes, but is not limited to, cable boxes, surround sound, microwaves, and security alarms. Provide simple, but detailed instructions so the babysitter does not run into any issues or reprogram your systems.
  5. Contagious Illnesses or Changes in Plan – If your child is sick, be sure to call the babysitter to check and see if they are still comfortable babysitting. Your babysitter might resent you and refuse to babysit again if you aren't honest about contagious illnesses to which they will be exposed. Also, as a courtesy, be sure to call if you plan on getting in late.

What's Your Affordable Family Go-To Spot For Special Occasions?

When you want to celebrate special occasions as a family, it's tough to find a kid-friendly place that offers affordable, good quality, and nutritious food.

When you want to celebrate special occasions as a family, it's tough to find a kid-friendly place that offers affordable, good quality, and nutritious food. Kids need room to play or some form of entertainment in front of them. Otherwise, you might spend your whole meal nagging them to stop kicking their legs or behave (like an adult).

I remember as a kid begging my parents to go to Benihana on my birthday to watch the hibachi cook make an onion ring volcano steam and flip shrimp tails into his coat pocket. I loved seeing him scramble an egg on the hibachi flat top grill and perfectly pack the fried rice into bowls with dome tops. Even today, going to Benihana is a special treat — one that the Jolie-Pitt family enjoyed last night — especially since Benihana used to only offer adult-size portions. However, Benihana has recently released a kid's menu, making the final check a little easier to swallow.

Where does your family go out to eat for special occasions?

Defeat First-Day-of-Preschool Blues

While some kids and parents have no problem with the first day of preschool, for many tots and mamas, the first day of school marks the first degree of separation and can be a very emotional and difficult day.

While some kids and parents have no problem with the first day of preschool, for many tots and mamas, the first day of school marks the first degree of separation and can be a very emotional and difficult day. Here are some first-day-of-preschool tips to help you deal with your emotions, so that you can be a supportive and loving parent but not give in to the whimpers of your child.

Here's what you should do:

  1. Smile and stay positive. You might have expected tears from your kid, but if you find yourself on the verge of tears, try to breathe through them and wait until you have dropped your child off you go into a boo-hooing fit. It's important that your child senses that you are taking them to a fun, happy, and secure place. If you start crying, they will pick up on your emotions and will become worried, too. Smiling and showing excitement will help them sense that preschool will be fun.
  2. Listen to the teacher. It's tempting to do what you think is best for your kid, but preschool teachers have experience and a game plan for upset preschoolers. They will mostly likely tell you that it's best if you leave, even if your child is still crying. Within five minutes of play, a child will usually stop crying. However, if your child becomes unruly, the teacher will contact you.

Monitor Your Baby With Ease and Comfort

Baby monitors have come a long way from the crackly, static-filled intercoms that filled store shelves just a few years ago.

Baby monitors have come a long way from the crackly, static-filled intercoms that filled store shelves just a few years ago. Today, they not only allow parents to hear if their lil one wakes up in the middle of the night, but they also offer video and temperature monitoring and can even be shared with family and friends. The Lorex Live Wireless Video Home Monitor ($170) offers all of this and more in a reliable, easy-to-use package. Setup couldn't be easier with the Lorex system. Simply power up both the camera and the display screen and begin viewing instantly.

The camera gives clear audio and video, and in darkness, it will automatically shift into night mode, creating illuminated imaging through infrared light sensors. Via the display screen, moms can hold the "Talk" button to speak directly to their tots. They can also turn on a comforting lullaby to soothe lil ones back to sleep.
