Fortunately, they're often as generous as they are knowledgeable. We talked with some of the best makeup artists in the business to get their best out-of-the-ordinary tips. (And no, we're not using the old "white eyeliner makes your eyes look bigger" thing. You've read it a hundred times.) Read on to see some of the best tips you haven't heard before.

The curved brush has short, stiff bristles that deposit just the right amount of mascara. The result: more voluminous (but still natural-looking) lashes with nary a clump in sight. Dusting powders always seem so old-fashioned, but in my book, that's a good thing. Elegantly held in appealingly retro packaging, Lollia's Calm dusting powder ($28) is too pretty to be stashed away. A fluffy puff distributes the rice powder, adding fresh scents of hyacinth, iris, and vetiver. No shimmer, no glitter — just smoother, softly fragranced skin. It's perfect after moisturizing, before bed, or any other time when you want to feel like a lady.

Burgundy is one of the season's biggest colors in fashion and beauty — and now there's more than one way to have a wine hue on your lips. Sonoma winery Clos du Bois has teamed up with makeup brand Pixi to create Cosmétique ($19, $30 with wine), a makeup set inspired by Clos du Bois Rouge Red. The sultry hue reveals itself in a mini lip gloss, a nail polish, and lip-and-cheek stain. All autumnal, all very everyday-wearable — and best of all, 100 percent of proceeds go to Step Up Women's Network. A cute kit with a charitable initiative? We'll drink to that.

Once upon a time, a beauty collaboration came together, and it was so lovely that we had to tell you all about it. In partnership with Disney, Sephora has launched Reigning Beauties, a series of exclusive collections inspired by the animation giant's most popular princesses. Kicking things off is Cinderella, whose tale is interpreted into lip color, fragrance, nail polish, and more. While the packaging is gorgeous, what's inside is even better. Housed in a velveteen tray, the Storylook eye shadow palette ($55) matches its 20 shades directly to the Pantone colors of the 1950 film. A gold shimmer is lifted from Gus Gus's shirt, a periwinkle hue is identical to the fairy godmother's dress, and (of course) Cinderella's glass slipper has inspired an icy light blue. Lest you think this is kids' stuff, the color payoff and silky texture are both impressive. Just as Cinderella had to dash home before midnight, though, this collection won't be around for long — so have a look before it's too late.

While it's nice to imagine the ocean as a happy playground for turtles and dolphins, the reality isn't so pretty. Each year, several millions of tons of plastic — everything from tossed containers to grocery bags — enter the ocean. On average, 46,000 pieces of plastic are floating in each square mile of sea. More than a million seabirds die from eating plastic each year, as do thousands of sharks, turtles, and other marine life.

Enter Method's dish and hand soap ($5, Whole Foods), which is packaged in a blend of recovered ocean plastic and postconsumer recycled plastic. Over the past year and a half, Method employees joined cleanup groups to hand-collect plastic from beaches in Hawaii — more than a ton in total. From there, the recovered plastic was recycled into the bottles that hold the soap. (It smells fresh, by the way.) Will soap bottles alone save the planet? No, but they can move people to reuse and recycle. And since the first step toward a cleaner ocean is keeping plastic out of it, that seems like a good place to start.
